Helen Margaret Prydz
Helen Margaret Prydz, 93, died on Friday, Aug. 8, 2003 at Sutter Amador Hospital in Jackson.
Mrs. Prydz was born on July 28, 1910, in Portland, Ore.
She attended St. Francis DeSales High School in Oakland, St. Mary’s Nursing School in San Francisco and graduated from there in 1931 as a registered nurse.
She was married at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Oakland in 1932 to George W. Prydz.
She was a Member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Volcano, Mace Meadow and Castle Oaks Golf Clubs.
She enjoyed golf and sewing. She retired to Amador County in 1974.
She is survived by her son George E. Prydz of Santa Rosa; daughter, Barbara F. Singer of Tyler, Texas; brother, Bernard F. Currigan of Carmichael and sister, Eileen Wise of Sacramento; four grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband George W. Prydz in 1977 and her sister Marian Raymer.
A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Jackson.
Inurnment will take place at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery
in Jackson.
Arrangements are being handled by McCrory’s Funeral Home in Pine Grove.

Opal Henrietta Doolittle
Opal Henrietta Doolittle, 72, died on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003 after undergoing emergency surgery in Sacramento.
Mrs. Doolittle was born on May 28, 1931 in Oakland.
Opal moved to Pine Grove from the Bay Area and was the owner of the Pine Grove Market in the mid 1960s.
She loved spending time with her family and taking care of her grandchildren.
She was an active gardener and worked in her garden nearly every day.
While a resident of Amador County she obtained her real estate license and was active in many organizations including the Highway 88 Boosters Club and the Amador County Chamber of Commerce.
Later she moved to Turlock where she worked for the Jack Smith Ranch, a group home for foster children which later became the Excel Center.
She was a member of the California Association of Children’s Homes and was asked to sit on the Blue Ribbon Committee of Stanislaus County, and was a member of the Covenant Church.
With over 20 years of service completed, she returned to Sutter Creek in 1993.
She was active in numerous groups including the Sutter Creek Woman’s Club of which she was a past president and was a volunteer at the Monteverde General Store.
Opal recently relocated to Rancho Murietta Village where she was chair of the neighborhood watch and on the neighborhood design committee.
She is survived by daughters, Kathy Steinmetz and her husband John of South Lake Tahoe, Linda Foyil of Pine Grove, Colleen Winter and her husband Gray of Sacramento; son, Charlie Doolittle and his wife Donna of Pine Grove; brothers, George Schmauch and his wife Barbara of Fresno, Jim Schmauch and his wife Mary of Auburn; grandchildren, Eric FoyiI and his wife Michelle of Camanche, Steven Foyil of Pine Grove, Melessa Sumich and husband her Mike of San Pedro, Scott Doolittle of Chico, and Taite and Dane Winter of Sacramento.
A memorial service was held at the United Methodist Church in Sutter Creek on Tuesday Aug. 12.
Arrangements were handled by George L. Klumpp Chapel of Flowers, Riverside Blvd., Sacramento.
Sally V. Sonder
Sally V. Sonder died on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, in Ione.
Sally was born on Oct. 2, 1931, in Merna, Wyo. She lived in Elk Grove for 21 years with her beloved husband, Leslie W. Sonder, whom she married in Merna on July 19, 1952. Ten years into their marriage, Les and Sally were blessed with three children, whom they raised proudly.
Upon her husband’s retirement in 1989, they moved to Vernal, Utah.
Due to the loss of her lifelong partner in 1999, Sally moved to Ione so she could be closer to her children, where she spent her remaining years.
Throughout her life, Sally enjoyed quilting, knitting and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was a member of the Kingsbury Community Church, the Uintah Club, the Historical Society and the Archaeological Society in Vernal, Utah.
She was involved with the Community United Methodist Church and Hospice in Ione.
She was the dear mother of Leslie Ann Keck and husband Bill (and her 2 step-grandchildren Heather and Zachary) of Galt; Shelly Lyn Middleton, husband Marcus and her grandchildren Alexandra, 13, and Ryan, 11, of Bagdad, Ariz.; and Steven Albert Sonder of Sacramento. Sally was the loving sister of Robert Thompson and his wife Marie of Sandy, Utah; and the late Marion Boroff (who passed away the same day as Sally) and her husband Max of Daniel, Wyo. Sally was preceded in death by her parents Laura and Harold Thompson; brothers Harold, Olie and Paul; and sister Laura.
A graveside service will be held for Sally after her late sister Marion’s services in Pinedale, Wyo. Marion’s service will be held at the Pinedale Cemetery, on Thursday, August 21, at 1 p.m., and Sally’s will follow.

Edna Minnie Darling
Edna Minnie (Yennie) Darling, 92, died on Wednesday night, Oct. 1, 2003, at her home in Sutter Creek.
A long-time resident of Amador County, Edna Yenni was the middle of seven children born to Swiss immigrants in Wakefield, Kan. Following high school, Edna obtained her nursing degree from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa in 1932. She was working at the Rebekah Odd Fellows Home near Manhattan, Kan., when she met her future husband, William Gustave “Gus” Darling, who worked in several capacities at the hospital.
In 1937, when Edna and her best friend, Amye, received offers to work at San Joaquin General Hospital in Stockton, Gus brought them to California.
Edna and Gus were married in Reno in 1938, and Amye married Gus’ younger brother a year later.
In the spring of 1950, Edna and Gus purchased the old Brusatori ranch outside of Sutter Creek, and moved in with their two young daughters, Carol and Elaine. For many years, Edna kept the house and ranch and raised her daughters alone, without running water, electricity, or telephone while Gus worked in Stockton during the week and came home only on the weekends.
Edna’s famous home cooking was always a favorite among the large extended family, making the Darling Ranch the center of gatherings almost every weekend for many years. Her “Waffle Breakfasts” never failed to earn high bids at the annual church auction.
For 50 years, she was an active member of the Sutter Creek United Methodist Church.
She also served as both past secretary and president of the Parent Teachers Association.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Jim Settlage of Sutter Creek and Elaine and Don King of Grass Valley; grandchildren, Marcus Settlage of Sutter Creek and Bonnie Settlage of Rochester, N.Y.; her youngest sister, Betty Hiatt of Portland Ore., and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus in June of 1984.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Sutter Creek United Methodist Church.
A reception will follow the service.
Arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society of Northern California in Sacramento.

James Louis Thorpe
James Louis Thorpe, 71, died on Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at his home in Pioneer.
Mr. Thorpe was born on Jan. 17, 1932, in Oakland.
He graduated from Albany High School in 1949, then joined the Albany Police Department for two years.
Then he was a member of the Concord Police Department for 25 years.
He enjoyed golf, computers, woodworking and fishing.
He survived by his wife, Janet Thorpe of Pioneer; daughters, Karen Cook of Pittsburg, Stacy Hampton of Walnut Creek, Julie Yarborough of Concord; sister, Nicki Ojala of Concord; and grandchildren, Andrew Hampton of Walnut Creek, Jenna Hampton of Walnut Creek and Patricia Hendrickson of Concord.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Buckhorn, followed by interment at Amador Memorial Cemetery
in Pioneer. Arrangements are being handled by McCrory’s Funeral Home in Pine Grove.
