Shane Lee Layher
It is with a mixture of sadness and joy that the family of Shane Lee Layher, 64, of Sacramento, brings you news of his passing into the presence of his beloved Lord Jesus. Shane went home to be with his Savior and Lord on Feb. 20, 2004, at 2:15 p.m. He died at home, surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren and other family members as the sounds of his favorite hymn filled the air. Following his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in 2001, Shane refused traditional treatment that would lower his quality of life, choosing instead to dedicate his remaining days to time spent with family and friends while serving his church and community. We are grateful to God that He allowed Shane to remain with us an additional two years beyond the initial prognosis of six months.
Shane was born on March 31, 1939 in North Loup, Neb., the oldest child of Merlin LeRoy and Nellie Lucile Layher. He spent much of his youth in Ione where his father still lives.
Following graduation from Ione High School in 1957, Shane enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Wadleigh as a fire control technician. During his military service he met and married Nancy Lee Schmidt of Waukegan, Ill., on April 15, 1961 and raised three children.
Moving to the Sacramento area in 1964, he went to work for PG&E as a journeyman electrician and electrical inspector in power plant construction before opening his own real estate company, Great North American Realty in 1976, which just celebrated it’s 28th year.
Shane was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Rancho Cordova with over 30 years of perfect attendance. He was a past president of the Rancho Cordova club and served as Lieutenant Governor of Division 44 in 1986-1987. His dedicated service to the community was recognized in 2001 when he received the Distinguished Service Award and again receiving the Kiwanian of the Year award for the years 2002-2003. He was again recognized when he was awarded the elite George F. Hixon Fellow Award in 2002.
He also enjoyed working with youth through the Kiwanis Key Club and involvement in scouting. He served as the District Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America and was active for several years in Girl Scouts. He participated n the annual “Grad Night” activities, providing high school graduates an alternative to alcohol-based graduation parties.
As a charter member of Bible Fellowship Baptist Church in 1984, Shane was instrumental in its founding. On the church’s 19th anniversary, his role was recognized when the church declared Nov. 9, 2003 to be “Shane Layher Day” and dedicated the auditorium in his name as “The Shane Layher Memorial Auditorium.”
A dedicated Christian, Shane delighted to share the Good News of Jesus with others. When people expressed sorrow about his cancer, he would reply, “I’m not afraid to die. Let me tell you why...”
Shane was passionate about learning and loved reading and poetry, along with the daily crossword puzzle. He dabbled in music, teaching himself to play the harmonica and accordion. His grandchildren loved to dance to his music. He was an exceptional carpenter and loved to work with wood. An avid hunter, Shane took many trips with his family, enjoying the great outdoors. He had a passion for cooking and was quite accomplished while wearing a chef’s apron. He was an incredibly talented man in whatever he did and was there for anyone at a moment’s notice to do anything that needed to be done. He was a very loved man.
Shane is survived by his father, Merlin LeRoy Layher of Ione; his very dedicated and loving wife Nancy Layher of Sacramento; daughter, Lisa Layher of El Dorado Hills; daughter, Shannon Rippetoe of Carmichael; son, Shawn Layher of Camino; son-in-law, Jason Rippetoe; daughter-in-law, Brenda Layher; eight grandchildren, Sarah, Emily, Caleb, Anna, Hudson, Eleyana, Nathaniel and Mikayla; three brothers and one sister, Henry Layher of Douglas, Wyo., Karen Mies of Shingle Springs, Terry Layher of Sheridan, Wyo., and Fred Layher of Glen Ellen. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nellie Lucile Layher on Sept. 30, 1988 and second sister, Justine Ann Layher on July 3, 1951.
As a beloved son, husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Viewing will take place on Friday, Feb. 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bible Fellowship Baptist Church.
A memorial funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. at Bible Fellowship Baptist Church, 9900 Horn Road at the corner of Horn and Fite in Sacramento.
