Robert ‘Bob’ W. Capen

Robert “Bob” W. Capen, 86, passed away on Friday, July 2, 2004 at his home in Sutter Creek.

Bob was born on Oct. 24, 1917 in Perry, Iowa, the third of five children. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 and was stationed in the Philippines and Newfoundland.

In 1956, he moved his family from the Midwest to Long Beach and in 1977, he and his wife Darlene, moved to Sutter Creek and lived there for 27 years.

He enjoyed carpentry and anything to do with “fixing” things, often helping his kids, grandkids, neighbors and his church with projects.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Darlene Capen; daughters, Judy Ferrell and her husband, John Ferrell, Barbara Brown and her husband, Steve W. Brown; grandchildren Andrea (Ferrell) Hauser and her husband Steve; Wendy (Brown) Walker and her husband Steve, Keith Ferrell and his wife LiseLott and Tana (Brown) Bussell. Bob was also blessed to have eight great-grandchildren: Heather, Kevin, Corey, Michael, Casey, Justin, Matthew and Patrick, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on July 5 to celebrate his life.

Inurnment will be in the Garden of Valor at Sunset View Cemetery in Martell.

Arrangements were handled by Nautilus Society of Northern California in Sacramento.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Amador, P.O. Box 595,  Jackson 95642.

Beverly Ann Moore

Beverly Ann Moore, 70, died on Thursday, July 1, 2004 at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

Mrs. Moore was born on June 6, 1934 to Doll and Ruby (Spradling) Moore in Kennett, Mo.

In 1952, she moved with her family to California, where she met her husband, Donald D. Moore, at the Port O’Call in Oakland, while he was on leave from the Navy

They had three sons, James Bradley Moore, John Steven Moore and David Brian Moore and in 1963, settled in Fremont.

At one time, they operated a small antique shop in Niles called “The Good Old Days.” Beverly also worked as a Realtor for Gygax Realty in Fremont.

Upon retirement in 1989, they moved to Sutter Creek.

After Donald’s passing in 1992, Beverly opened “Somewhere in Time, Tea Room and Antique Collective.”

She is survived by her sons, as well as her sister, Betty L. Honore of San Leandro; four grandsons and two granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Donald Dean Moore on July 9, 1992.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Daneri Mortuary Chapel in Jackson.

The funeral service will take place following the visitation at 1 p.m. at the same location.

Interment will be at Irvington Memorial Park in Fremont.

Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

Rowena E. McCombie

Rowena E. McCombie, 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 1, 2004 at her home in Sutter Creek.

Mrs. McCombie was born on Sept. 30, 1913 to Orin and Estelle Adams in Oakland.

She graduated from University of California, Berkeley and taught high school for seven years.

In 1936, Rowena married Allan McCombie in Oakland and lived there until 1975 when they made Amador County their home, living in the Pine Grove and Sutter Creek areas.

She was a member of the Sutter Creek United Methodist Church and the Sutter Creek Woman’s Club.

She enjoyed reading about archeology, religion and history.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Allan McCombie of Sutter Creek; son, Glen McCombie of Sacramento, son and daughter-in-law, Allan and Delores McCombie of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren, Kendra, Devin, Jason, Scott, Kathleen, Teresa and Elizabeth; nephews, Walter Adams, David Adams and Robert Adams.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Walter Adams.

A graveside service will take place on Saturday, July 10 at 10:30 a.m.. in the Garden of Tranquility at Sunset View Cemetery in Martell.

Inurnment will follow.

Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the Library, 530 Sutter St.,  Jackson 95642.

Irvin ‘Phil’ Phillips

Irvin “Phil” Phillips, 76, of Pioneer, died on Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Sutter Amador Hospital in Jackson.

Mr. Phillips was born on June 7, 1928 in Sioux City, Iowa.

He was a member of SIRs Upcountry, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Ione.

He enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Phillips of Pioneer; son, Glen Phillips of Pioneer; daughters, Karen Denton of Lake Isabella, Wendy Phillips of Winters, Colette Silva of Winters; sisters, Lila Millar of  Texas, Edna Stevens of Missouri; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will take place on Thursday, July 8 at 1 p.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church in Pioneer.

Inurnment will be at the Amador Memorial Cemetery in Pioneer.

Arrangements are being handled by McCrory’s Funeral Home in Pine Grove.

Memorial contribution may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1765 Challenge Way, Ste. 115, Sacramento 95815.

Ruby Ellen Baker

Ruby Ellen Baker, 80, died of natural causes on Sunday, June 20, 2004, at her home in Turlock where she had lived for two years.

Mrs. Baker was born Ruby Ellen Risen Hoover, on Oct. 24, 1923 in Tahlequah, Okla.

She was a homemaker for 59 years.

She lived in Angels Camp for 22 years and was a member of the Church of Christ of Turlock.

She enjoyed having her family around her and loved reading.

She is survived by her son, Stanley W. Baker of San Jose; brothers, Charlie Edwards of Turlock, Bill Edwards of Arnold and Jim Edwards of Fresno; sisters, Mary Hessecar of Port Hueneme and Bertie Thompson of Fresno; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons.

The funeral took place on Saturday, July 3 at  Whitehurst, Norton and Dias Chapel in Turlock.

Burial took place on Tuesday, July 6 at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine.

Arrangements were handled by  Whitehurst, Norton and Dias Funeral Service, 286 West Main St., in Turlock.

Lois Marie Thompson

Lois Marie Thompson, 77, of Pine Grove, died at her home on Thursday, July 1, 2004.

She was born on Aug. 5, 1926 in Huntington Beach.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, July 7 at noon at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Buckhorn.

Arrangements are being handled by McCrory’s Funeral Home in Pine Grove.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of the Pines Society, c/o St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 115 Court St.,  Jackson 95642.

John Vidak Vukovich

John Vidak Vukovich, 94, died on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 in Jackson.

Mr. Vukovich was born on Jan. 17, 1910 to Vidak and Stana Vukovich in Jackson.

John attended local schools and graduated from  Jackson High School.

He continued on to graduate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1933 and received his teaching degree from College of the Pacific.

He lived in Galt from 1937 until 1945 and was teaching and coaching at Galt High School from 1938 until 1942.

He taught and coached at Sacramento High School from 1942 until 1946 and coached football, basketball and baseball at Amador County schools from 1955 until 1962.

John ran a branch distributorship in Sutter Creek for Roy Deary’s Hires Bottling Company of Sacramento for several years during the late 1940s into the 1950s. He started Vukovich Distribution Company in Sutter Creek in the mid 1950s and sold wholesale Lucky Lager, Burgermeister, Schlitz and Miller High Life Beers.

He sold the distributorship in 1971.

He was a member of the Henry Clay Masonic Lodge 95 of Sutter Creek for 56 years and he was the lodge’s treasurer for 38 years from 1956 until 1994. John was master of the Henry Clay Lodge twice and received the Hiram Award from the Masonic Grand Lodge of California in 1983. He was also a member of the Ben Ali Temple and a founding member of the Sutter Creek Lions Club.

He was a resident of Amador County for approximately 80 years.

He is survived by his sons, Richard Vukovich of Sutter Creek, William “Bill” Vukovich of Jackson, John “Brother” Vukovich of New Jersey; grandchildren, Vincent Vukovich and Nicole Stolarick both of New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Lena Vukovich on July 4, 1984 and his sister, Zorka Klarich.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

The funeral service will take place on Saturday, July 3 at 10 a.m. at Daneri Mortuary Chapel in Jackson. Interment will be at the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Cemetery in Jackson. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.
