Kathryn Louise Tofelt
Kathryn Louise Tofelt, 86, died on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at Sutter Amador Hospital in Jackson.
Mrs. Tofelt was born on Jan. 22, 1918 to Gustav and Christa Huss in Minot, N.D. Kathryn married Alvin Tofelt on Aug. 30, 1941 in Minot.
She lived in Oakland for 16 years and was a member of the Park Boulevard Presbyterian Church in Oakland.
Kathryn became a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Pioneer in 1981 when she moved to Amador County. She was a member of the P. E.O. Sisterhood chapter V. Q.
She is survived by her son, Tom Tofelt of Pioneer; brother, Paul Huss of Topeka, Kans.; grandchildren, Sierra Nicole Nemec and Andrew Paul Tofelt both of Sacramento; and great-granddaughter, Morgan Nemec of Sacramento. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Alvin Tofelt on May 2, 2001 and sister, Esther Russell.
Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 7 at 11 a.m. at Daneri Mortuary Chapel in Jackson. Inurnment will be at Sunset View Cemetery
in Martell. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

Arbon ‘Bill’ Malone
Arbon “Bill” Malone, 79, died on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at his home in Jackson.
Mr. Malone was born on Dec. 19, 1924, the last of 10 children born to Walter and Dealie Malone of Chattanooga, Tenn., and he grew up there. He worked for 50 years delivering bread.
Bill was a resident of Hayward for 20 years before moving to Amador County in 1970 and built his own home in Pioneer. He enjoyed reading
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Hildegard Malone of Jackson; children, Janet Butler of Jackson, James Michael Malone of Hayward, Sue Semple and her husband, John of Texas; step-children, Heidi Esposito and her husband, Carl of Castro Valley, Tim Wright of Modesto; sisters, Janette Quinne of Florida, Freda Turner of Tennessee; brother, Bobby Gene Malone of Tennessee; grandchildren, Ronald Butler of Jackson and Chelsea; and step-granddaughter, Kimberly Esposito of Castro Valley. He was preceded in death by his grandsons, Michael Butler in March 2003 and Joey Esposito.
A graveside service will take place on Monday, July 5 at 11 a.m. at Amador Memorial Cemetery
in Pioneer and Interment will follow. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

Helga Hammond
Helga Hammond, 86, of Sutter Creek, died on Saturday, June 26, 2004 in the comfort of her home.
Born Helga Lisa Paula Schulte in northern Germany, Helga was one of seven siblings. She married Ludwig Storz in 1939, with whom she had two children, Ingrid and Ulrich, The marriage was brief as Ludwig was killed during World War II, fighting on the Russian front. A widowed mother of two, her home and country destroyed, Helga moved to England in 1949 to build a new life. There she met and married USAF officer William Hammond, who remained her true love until her last days.
In 1955, Helga and the children moved once again: This time to Southern California, where Bill was stationed. After two years, Bill was transferred to Castle Air Force Base. After his retirement from the service, they briefly moved to Alaska, but returned to Sacramento where Bill taught at Sacramento State and Helga worked as an interior decorator,
In 1977, they found a home in Pioneer and settled in for the best years of their lives together. Bill died in 1993, after which Helga made her final home in Sutter Creek.
Through the years, no matter what life dealt her, Helga’s joie de vivre never waned. She was a treasure hunter, whether in a crowd of new faces, or shopping a thrift store, she always looked for the gems and cherished what she found. She was a competitor: Be it golf, Scrabble or cards, she played to win, but laughed at herself when she didn’t. Most importantly, she lived life fully, following her love for the cultures and terrains of the world to destinations around the globe, as well as within her community.
She toured the U.S. and returned to Europe numerous times, but also ventured further, hiking the Andes in Peru in 1983 and the 35-mile Milford Trek in New Zealand in 1987. She visited Malaysia, Borneo and Singapore in 1995. And finally, in 1997, she realized her life-long dream of seeing South Africa, spending a spectacular month visiting relatives and touring Kruger National Game Park.
When failing eyesight curbed her travel, she stayed closer to home, where she was an active member of Friends of Music and Amador County Farmers Market and a volunteer at Hospice Thrift Shop, the Amador Senior Center and the library. She loved hiking in the Sierras, cross-country skiing, gardening, cooking, watching her birds and reading. Above all, she loved a good laugh.
Her friends and family will remember her for her style, her spirit, and the way she faced life (and even her impending death): Face first, with all cards on the table.
She is survived by her daughter, Ingrid Quick and her husband, Dave, of Goldsboro, N.C.; son, Ulrich Storz and his wife, Janet of Portola Valley; granddaughters Karin Thompson and her husband Andy of Goldsboro, N.C., Tanya Quick and her husband, Jay Walitalo of New York City; Mika Storz of Portola Valley; and great-granddaughter Kate Thompson.
The family will hold a private memorial service, as requested in Helga’s final wishes. Inurnment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by McCrory’s Funeral Home in Pine Grove.

Martin French
Martin French, 47, of Pioneer, died on Thursday, June 24, 2004 in Plymouth.
Mr. French was born on Jan. 3, 1957 in Quincy. A private family service will be held. Arrangements were handled by McCrory’s Funeral Home in Pine Grove.
Richard "Dick" Lyman Spencer
Richard "Dick" Lyman Spencer, 81, passed away after an extended illness, on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004 at his home in Sutter Creek.
Dick was born on Jan 11, 1923 in Canton, China, one of six children. His father was a professor at Lingnan University with the Presbyterian Board of Missions.
At age seven, Dick's widowed mother moved the family back to the United States, where they eventually settled in Williams Bay, Wisc. After graduating from high school, Dick attended Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisc.
He took a break from college to serve in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he married Josephine "Josy" Ambrose in July 1945.
Returning to college, he graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1948 with a bachelor of science degree.
Dick and Josy then moved to Amador County where he began his career with the Winton Lumber Company. He held many positions during his 37 years in the wood products industry including, assistant construction engineer, employee relations manager, plant safety officer, environmental control manager, public relations manager and personnel manager.
As the personnel manager, Dick strove to hire local high school boys at the mill. After pulling green chain for the summer, many of those boys who were debating whether to continue their education, were inspired to enroll in college.
He assisted in writing Industry Safety Standards and the Logging and Sawmill Safety Orders and his interest in safety continued after enactment of the CAL/OSHA Act which formed the Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
Dick was named President of the California Lumberman's Accident Prevention Association for the years 1963 and 1964, and following that, he was associated with the executive committee. His interest in safety led to his becoming one of California's first Licensed Safety Engineers (#2664), and his interest in education prompted him to seek election to the Oro Madre School Board, where he served with distinction.
Over the years he was committed to programs designed to benefit youth and the Boy Scouts of America presented him with its Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor a scouting leader can obtain for outstanding adult participation. Dick's award was in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the scouting program in Amador County and for his activities instrumental in bringing into existence the Boy Scout Camp at Bear River Reservoir through the material assistance of the Winton Lumber Company.
Dick hand-carved an enlarged wooden replica of the scouting emblem that still hangs above the fireplace in the main dining hall. He also wrote the dedication plaque for Camp Winton that hangs at the camp today. It reads:
"Camp Winton Golden Empire Council, Boy Scouts of America. Dedicated Aug. 3, 1958 to that natural resource, the boy youth of America and to the preservation of the spirit of integrity, self-reliance and vision exemplified by the Frontier Scout and the Pioneer. May the boys who camp here capture something of this spirit by being touched by the eternal mountains, the infinite sky, the sparkling lake and the solemnity of the forest and may they grow in stature for having camped here. Winton Lumber Company."
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Josy Spencer; their four children, Richard and his wife Janine, Brookes, Susan and her husband Carl, Timothy and his wife Marie; 10 grandchildren, Aaron, Amanda, Shand, Nathan, Brett, Hadley, Joe, Jacklyn, Hayden and Brookes; sisters, Elizabeth Calkins of Towson, Md., Sarah Ward of Winter Park, Fla.; brother, Brookes of Corvallis, Ore.; step-brother Martin Benedict of Pisqah Forest, N.C.

A private family service was held on Friday, Aug. 6 to celebrate Dick's life. Inurnment was private. Arrangements were handled by McCrory's Funeral Home in Pine Grove.
