J. Robert Chapman passed away at home in Winters on Aug. 9, 2005. Born on Sept. 10, 1945, in Woodland, he was 59 years old. A lifelong Winters resident, he was a descendent of a pioneering family. A 1963 Winters High School graduate, he attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Mr. Chapman was employed as a director of logistics for Con-Agra (formerly Hunt-Wesson and Beatrice Foods) for 30 years, retiring in 2001. He also served in the National Guard for 30 years, retiring at the rank of Colonel in 1996. He served on the Winters Planning Commission for six years, and the Winters City Council from 1980 to 1996 and again in 2002 until the time of his death. He served as Winters mayor for 14 of his first 16 years on the council and was honored with the title, Mayor Emeritus. He represented the city in a variety of city and area boards and commissions, including the Sacramento Area Council of Governments and the Yolo County Local Agency Formation Commission. He was a former member of the Winters Lions Club and a current member of the Winters Rotary Club, for which he served as president in 2004. He enjoyed tending his vegetable garden, loved going to his family’s cabin in Kingvale and was an avid reader.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Nicki; daughter Shelly Chapman of Sacramento, mother Dorothy Chapman of Winters, sister and brother-in-law Merne and Tom Stowers of Dixon, and sisters-in-law Viona Hague of Winters, Deborah Kent of Dixon and Jean Supernault of Charlotte, North Carolina; brother-in-law John Hale of Winters; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother Delman Hague, sister Jackie Hale and father James Rufus Chapman.
A visitation was held for Mr. Chapman on Sunday, Aug. 14, from 4-7 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel in Davis. Funeral Services took place on Monday, Aug. 15, at the Winters Community Center in Winters, followed by a military burial at the Winters Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made in Mr. Chapman’s name to the SMA Chaplin’s Fund, Sergeant Major Association, 7785 La Mirada Circle, Buena Park, CA 90620.

James Wilson Baylor passed away in Sacramento on Aug. 7, 2005. Born on Aug. 2, 1949, in San Antonio,  Texas, he was 56 years old.
A resident of Yolo County for 37 years, he served in the United States Army after graduating from high school. He worked at Mariani Nut Company for 33 years as a plant manager. He also coached Little League in Winters for 20 years.
He is survived by his wife of six years, Lori Jo Baylor; daughters Jennifer Hughey and JoAnn Davis; sons, Rudy and Jason Baylor; stepdaughters, Jenny and Cassie Dutton; sisters Patricia Baylor Black, Nancy Baylor Jiminez, Lorraine Smith, Carol Ramos and Rosemary Meria; brothers, Benjamin and Frank Baylor; five grandchildren, Julian James Hughey, Cole Lawrence Hughey, Austin James Baylor, Renee Baylor and Jason William Davis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudy James Baylor and Minerva T. Baylor.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, Aug. 11, at 9 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Winters.
Donations may be made in Mr. Baylor’s name to the Alex G. Spanos Heart Center, 3400 Data Drive, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670.

Eugenia R. Hughes passed away at her Winters home on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, after a lengthy illness. Born on Nov. 22, 1925 in Winters to Emilio and Maria Ramos, she was 79 years old.
Mrs. Hughes was raised in Winters, where she graduated from Winters High School. She lived in the Bay Area for many years, before returning to Winters in 1993. Her family described her as a very loving and spirited person who had a generous heart. She loved the color pink and was known to many as the "Pink Lady."
She is survived by her husband, Roland Hughes, of Winters; her children, Veronica Martin, of Oakland, Carroll Quam and his wife, Jane, of San Leandro, and Lorrie Quam, of Santa Rosa. She is further survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Ramos, of Williams, Emily Restuch, of Oakdale, Beatrice Ramos, of Vacaville, Carmen Rubio and Rose Ramos, both of Winters, Flora Carillo, of Sacramento and Eleanore Williams, of Davis.
Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her parents, Emilio and Maria Ramos, and a brother, Raymond Ramos.
The evening vigil service was held on Sunday, Aug. 7, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. The funeral mass was held on Monday, Aug. 8, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial was held at the Winters Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

Ivan Fredrick Johnston, age 63, a resident of Winters for 31 years died suddenly on August 1, 2005 at the Sutter Roseville Medical Center with his family at his side. He was born on April 14, 1942 in Boaz, Wisconsin to Rodney and Edna Johnston.
He started his career in his teens working summers with Carter Construction in North Sacramento. He was a local and regional contractor for 40 years plus. He worked on many houses and public buildings in the Bay Area to building luxury homes in Truckee and Granite Bay. In 1998, he started his own construction company, MI Construction and was a sub contractor with Palmer Construction and Starwood Construction of Woodland.
Ivan was an avid motorcycle enthusiast who enjoyed spending his days working on a bike for a friend/grandchild or taking his bike up to the Stoneyford area. He had just received his 25-year lifetime membership in the America Motorcycle Association. He was also active in the community and this included his most recent volunteer work installing the mow strip around the track at Winters High School.
Ivan is survived by his loving wife of 31 yearsm Margot Colleen and children, Richars of Sacramento; Mickey (wife Robin) of Ojai; Debra Vomacka (husband Mark) of Dobbins, and step-children Carolyn Chambers (fiancé Ed Gale) of Winters, Carwin Brice II (wife Margarita) of Winters; Cynthia Maze (husband Scott) of Lenoir, North Carolina; and Brian Brice (fiancé Tonya Morrow) of Elmira. Ivan came from a close family and was one of ten children. Surviving him are Ronald of St. Peter, Minnesota; Elaine Sullaway of Sacramento; Bill (wife Dorothy) of Rio Linda; Linda Elliot of Citrus Heights; Sharon De Groot of West Sacramento; David of Fair Oaks; and Paul (wife Nancy) of Phoenix, Arizona. He was a proud and devoted grandfather and uncle to his numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His parents Rodney and Edna Johnston preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Anthony in Winters on Saturday, August 6 at 1 p.m. The Celebrant was Father Chuck Kelly. The internment will be held at a later date in Weaverville, CA.
He was a compassionate, caring man who helped many in their time of need. He will be deeply missed by all. By being an organ donor, Ivan gives the gift of life to others.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to St. Anthony, the American Heart Association or the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel in Davis.

A funeral for Bruce James Doreo, 30, of Davis was held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Milton Carpenter Funeral Home, 569 N. First Street, Dixon.
Pastor Frank Salamone officiated and a burial followed.
Mr. Doreo died August 25, 2005 in Davis.
He was born March 27, 1975.
He served in the Army as a tank crewman for three years.
Mr. Doreo is survived by his father, Albert and his wife, Tomi Doreo, of Winters, mother Linda Doreo, and brothers Anthony Doreo, and Richard and Joseph Diaz, of Winters.

Jay Farnsworth passed away on Sept. 3, 2005, in Stockton. Born Feb. 12, 1945, he was 60 years old.
The family was raised in Winters.
He is survived by his mother, Rose Baker, of Vacaville; daughters, Kari Holstein, of Stockton and Tami Farnsworth, of Sacramento; two sisters, Sherrie Kidwell, of Vacaville and Bonnie Saporetti, of Oroville, and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Lazaro Suarez Martinez, age 80, passed away on October 16, at Alderson Convalescent Hospital in Woodland, California. He was born on March 27, 1925 in Durango, Mexico to Lorenzo and Benita Suarez Martinez. He married Lupe Morales, she preceded him in death.
Mr. Martinez resided in Yolo County for the past 60 years.
He is survived by his children, Lorenzo Martinez; Jesse Martinez; Gloria Martinez; Joe Martinez and Linda Carrasco; grandchildren, Joseph; Magen; Jonathon; Jenna; Erin Ashlee; Melissa and Marcie Martinez; Mathew; Jorday and Marcus Carrasco and Nichal Doran; great-grandchild, Christain Martinez.
A rosary was held on Wednesday October 19 at St. Anthony’s Church located in Winters.

Samuel Donald “Sam” Lewis passed away unexpectedly at Sutter Hospital in Davis, on Oct. 19, 2005, at the age of 71. Mr. Lewis was born in Atlanta, Georgia on Sept. 24, 1934 to Joe D. and Mamie (Hensley) Lewis.
A resident of Yolo County for 20 years, Mr. Lewis was a retired Naval Commander (Reserve) who had been a damage control instructor at the Treasure Island Naval Station in San Francisco. He had completed his university training at Emery University, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree. A member of the Pinole Jaycees, he was remembered as a generous and caring individual with a good sense of humor. He later worked for Lucky Stores Warehouse for 15 years, where he was a supervisor. A dedicated family man, he was most happy while surrounded by his daughters and grandchildren.
He is survived by three daughters, Catherine Carrillo and Paula Lewis, of Woodland, and Amanda Elf, of Dixon; also by seven grandchildren, Joshua and Nicholas Ramos, of Winters, Dustin and Alexandra Timm and Kyle Lewis, all of Woodland, and Linsey Elf and Alyssa Tapparo, both of Dixon.
A visitation was scheduled from 9-11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation ECLA, 1701 Russell Boulevard, Davis, with funeral services following at 11 a.m.
Interment will follow at the Winters Cemetery in Winters, with military honors to be presented at that time. Donations in memory of Mr. Lewis may be made to the Northern California Cancer Society.
Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements. Inquiries may be made by calling 662-4658.
