Gloria I. Egan
November 16, 1926 - January 17, 2007
Gloria was born to Joseph and Irene O’Connell in Albany, New York November 16, 1926.
Growing up and living in New York, she received formal training in the arts and loved raising show dogs and horses until the early 1960s.
While working at the Mercury Test Site in Nevada she met, fell in love with and married James F. Egan.
They lived and worked in Nevada for the next eleven years.
Gloria and Jim relocated to Frazier Park in early 1970.
She loved riding her horse in and around town.
Gloria truly enjoyed the times she rode her horse and displayed her art during the annual Fiesta Days celebration.
James, the love of her life, preceded her in death, as did her mother Irene, father Joseph, brother John and step-daughter Christine Egan.
She is survived by her step-son James Egan Jr., daughter-in-law Joni Egan, grandchildren Jimmy and Jenna, sister Dolores Cronin, nephew Robert Cronin, nieces Susan St. James and Nancy Pavlik, and many more relatives and dear friends.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26 and services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, California. (661-366-5766)
John Bilek
In loving memory of a truly remarkable man.
John Bilek, of Pine Mountain, passed away at the age of 60 awaiting a double lung transplant.
John was a "brain" in accounting and business as well as a truly intelligent man, contemplating life on a daily basis.
He never hesitated to pass on his wealth of knowledge and skills to those around him.
His patience, good nature, and friendship will never be forgotten.
He lived every day to the fullest.
He continued to work every day no matter how difficult it was to breathe.
For him, there was never a good reason not to work.
He was dedicated in every pursuit.
He treated everyone as an equal.
He was a fair and honest man.
He worked in an office full of women yet never complained or got upset.
He was tolerant of our mistakes.
"That is why they invented erasers," he would say.
John knew how to keep things simple. Everything appeared easy to him and he made it easy for us.
He loved and adored his wife, Arlyn, taking her flowers and lunch every Friday.
He loved his dogs Stevie and Tina, bringing them to the office, taking them to the beauty shop as he would his children.
Thank you John Bilek for your tolerance, your kindness, your patience, your humor, and most of all thank you for the strength and determination you showed us every day that you were here.
You will never be forgotten and will live in our hearts and minds forever.
Norbert Henry Stohlman
October 22, 1914 - November 27, 2007
Memorial services for Norbert "Bert" Henry Stohlmann will be held on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m. at the Lebec Community Church.
Bert was a WWII Veteran of the South Pacific Theatre and was active with the VFW in Frazier Park.
He was born on October 22, 1914 in Missouri and passed away on November 27, 2007 in Bakersfield, California.
He enjoyed woodworking and playing pool.
He was an electrician in the San Fernando Valley area for many years.
Bert also trained dogs for the movies in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
Some of the famous dogs he worked with were "Toto" from The Wizard of Oz, "Asta" from The Thin Man, and the dog from the movie The Egg and I.
Bert lived in Van Nuys for over 30 years, then made his home in Lebec for 20 years and finally spent his last two years in Bakersfield.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Stohlmann; his daughters Linda Marie Sanders (from Apple Valley, California); Diane Wade (and husband Tom, from Camarillo, California); Denise Leach (from Agoura, California); Janice Jackson (and husband, John, from Bakersfield, California); Mary Bollman (and husband, Dave, from Frazier Park); son Jim Shaffer (from Reseda, California); sister Bernice Thiess (and husband, Jack, from Oregon); sister Lorraine Jorgensen (and husband, Loren, from Nebraska); many grandchildren, great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
Bert was a loving father and grandfather.
His grandchildren were extra special to him.
He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
Betty M. Bivins
September 11, 1923 - April 2, 2007
Betty M. Bivins, who spent her retirement years in Frazier Park, died April 2, 2007 at 83.
She had an active life with numerous accomplishments.
She was a master teacher of English in the Los Angeles Unified School District, a specialist in the LAUSD area office, author of seven books, owner of The Write Group (to market local authors) and was a Savings and Loan officer early in her career.
She fractured her hip before Christmas and began rehabilitation therapy soon after.
Despite excellent care and a valiant effort on her part, there were complications.
She had overcome operations for her back, a lumpectomy and a mastectomy for stage five breast cancer, followed by radiation burns and two cataract surgeries in the past five years. However, she died very peacefully.
Betty served in the U.S Marine Corps in World War II and was recalled from the Reserve for the Korean Conflict.
She received degrees at the University of Missouri in English and from the University of Southern California, where she won the Emory Bogardus Award in Sociology and also received her teaching credential.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Earl Jr. and Blunche Bivins, her brother Zach and her sister-in-law, Peggy.
She is survived by her nieces, Michelle and Patti, her son Christopher and foster son, Carter who lives in Kingman, Arizona.
She will be missed by her friends in the Los Angles area and Frazier Park and by her beloved cats, dogs, and birds.
In accordance with her wishes, she was cremated without services. However if you wish to honor her memory, read a good book and reach out to help an animal. It would be a fitting tribute to Betty.
