Phyllis Arlene Nichols

Phyllis Arlene Nichols “Arlene” died May 1, 2004, in Lincoln.

For 28 years Arlene was a resident of Morgan Hill. She was a certified nutritionist and assisted customers in the Guardian Nutrition Products store she co-owned and operated with her husband of 52 years, Don Nichols. He died earlier this year.

Arlene was born June 17, 1931, in Emmett, Idaho to Alice Jane (Rynearson) Hunter and Joseph Waite (Jay) Hunter. At Emmett High School Arlene was active as a cheerleader, student council member and editor of the school newspaper. Following high school, Arlene worked as a clerk for the Idaho Department of the Interior.

When her children were young Arlene focused on home and volunteer work in Southern California and San Jose. In 1961 she began working toward a college degree. She received her BA in Art and a lifetime elementary school teaching credential from San Jose State University in 1971. Arlene was an accomplished ceramic artist.

She and her husband, Don, built and operate Round Table Pizza Franchises in Gilroy and Morgan Hill. They sold those businesses, traveled to the Caribbean and returned to start the Guardian Nutrition health store business in 1983 only to rebuild it following a major earthquake one year later.

Arlene was active in the community, particularly growth issues in Morgan Hill. She sang in the American Association of University Women choir. After earning her certificate as a Certified Nutritionist, she served as president of the National Association of Certified Nutritionists and worked locally with customers and community groups on health concerns.

Arlene is survived her sister Lola Kysar of North Bend, Oregon; sister-in-law Darlene Hunter of Emmett, Idaho; children Wayne Nichols of Rocklin and Laura Horsey of West Linn, Oregon; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to attend funeral services to be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at the Potter Funeral Chapel 228 E. Main, Emmett, Idaho.

A memorial service is planned for a later date in Morgan Hill.

The family asks that any donations be made to Citizens for Health (www.citizens.org).

Helen Louise Roma

Helen Louise Roma died April 28, 2004, after a lingering illness.

Helen was born Feb. 26, 1930, to W.R. and Ruth Olson, in Olaf, Mont. In 1947 she married Anthony Roma of Shawmut, Mont. In 1948 the couple had William, followed by Carolyn in 1950. Shortly thereafter they moved to San Jose, where son Theodore was born followed by a daughter, Debra. In 1973 the family moved to San Martin.

Helen spent most of her life as a housewife, raising her family, but did work for a number of years as a postal carrier.

She is survived by her husband; children; six grand-children; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of  Johnson Funeral Home.

Louis P. Silva

Louis P. Silva, age 87, died May 11, 2004 in Morgan Hill.

He was a retired dairyman/farmer.

Born in San Jose on April 2, 1917, Louis was the beloved husband of Mary S. Silva for 63 years; loving father of Shirley Silva and William Silva; and loving grandfather of Lindsay Silva, all of San Martin. He also was survived by many nieces and nephews.

Louis was preceded in death by his sister Angie Silva and brothers German, Tony, William, Fernando and Albert Silva.

Services take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy, with a viewing starting at 1 p.m.

Private burial will be at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery.

William Fawcett

William Fawcett died on May 11, 2004.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen Fawcett; four daughters; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service took place May 13 at the Celebration Community Church, 859 Blossom Hill, San Jose.

The family asks that any donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation. 1-800-327-4545.

Services were under the direction of  Johnson Funeral Home.

Dora Diaz-Mendoza

Dora Diaz-Mendoza, 73, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, in Gilroy

Mrs. Mendoza moved to Gilroy in 1954 and has been a resident ever since. She enjoyed helping raise her grandchildren and played a big role in their lives. She also enjoyed playing cards especially poker. She was a native of Las Cruces.

She was the wife of Onesimo J. Mendoza of Wapato, Wash.; loving mother of Mary Mendoza of Gilroy, Jesse Mendoza (Gloria) of  Washington, Martha Rodriguez (Moses) of  Washington, John Mendoza, Anita Mendoza, Emily Campos, all of Gilroy, Antonio Mendozaof San Jose and Virginia Torres (Yoni) of Gilroy; loving grandmother of Rudy Lujan, Veronica Romero, Albert Bermudez, Emma Mendoza, Jesse Mendoza Jr., Ruby Castaneja, Ben Rodriguez, David Rodriguez, Mario Mendoza, Stephanie Mendoza, Nati Mendoza, Genevia Gallegos, Alex Suarez, Christopher Elizondo, Annette Ruiz, Francisco Elizondo, Felicia Juarez, Gerardo Juarez and Melicia Juarez; great-grandmother of 38; sister of Delfina Diaz, Ralph Diaz, Damas Diaz, Gloria Diaz, Isabel Diaz, Ruben Diaz, Raymond Diaz, Mary Avina and Katherine Vegas. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father Ralph Diaz; mother Guadalupe Alvarez-Diaz; daughter Anita Mendoza; granddaughter Alma Lujan; sister Cruz Robles; and brother Jesse Diaz.

A memorial service was this morning, May 7, at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

James A. Dean Jr. (Jimmy Dean)

James A. Dean Jr. (Jimmy Dean) died Thursday, May 13, 2004, in Palo Alto. he was 73

He was longtime resident of Morgan Hill, longtime member of the Morgan Hill American Legion and Lion's Club and frequent visitor of the Morgan Hill Senior Center.

He was the loving husband of the late Bonnie Woolley Dean.

He is survived by stepson Raymond Woolley; brothers Bob Dean, Sam Dean and Tom Dean; sisters Mary Propst, Hazel Sledge, Leara Leasure and Jackie Dean.

He also was preceded in death by sisters Deanna Edwards and Norma Hofftizer.

Friends are invited to attend services. A viewing will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 20, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Morgan Hill. A viewing at the church from 10-11 a.m. will precede the service. Grave dedication will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.
