Rita E. Delorme
Rita E. (Malo) Delorme, 83, of Lincoln, R.I., died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Heritage Hills Nursing Centre, Smithfield, R.I.
She was the wife of Albert R. Delorme, whom she had been married to for 56 years. Born in Pawtucket, R.I., she was the daughter of the late Theodore S. and Helen E. (Robillard) Malo. Rita had lived in Morgan Hill from 1977 until moving to Lincoln, R.I. in October 2000. She had previously resided in Pawtucket. She was employed in the marking room and was a checker for the former Shartenberg’s, Outlet Company, New York Lace Store, Lorraine Mills and Moore Fabrics. She enjoyed reading, day trips and vacationing.
Besides her husband she leaves behind a son, Raymond J. Delorme of Cranston; a daughter, Suzanne H. Palmieri of Groton, Conn.; a brother, Albert A. Malo of Pawtucket; a sister, Claire H. Bouffard of Lemoore.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Leo O. Malo.
The funeral was May 15 at the William W. Tripp Funeral Home, Pawtucket. Funeral Mass was at St. Jude Church, Lincoln. Burial followed at Notre Dame Cemetery, Pawtucket.
John R. Winn
John R. Winn died May 25, 2004, in San Francisco after a brief illness. He was 71.
Mr. Winn owned and operated Winn and Co. Insurance Brokers from 1955-94. Since 1994 John has remained active in the business which his son Don now owns. Mr. Winn loved water-skiing and motorcycles. He loved to be on the water with his classic Chris Craft or his offshore race boat. Mr. Winn was a Coast Guard veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the VFW and the B.P.O.E.
Mr. Winn is survived by his wife, Carolyn Winn, of Gilroy. He is the father of Donald Winn of Hollister and Patty Dumas of Purcell, Okla., and stepfather of Mark, Matt, Michelle and Michael Wallace. John is the brother of Peggy Ford of Nipomo, Mike Winn and Pat Winn, both of Hollister. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and good friends.
A memorial service was this morning, May 28, at St. Mary’s Church in Gilroy.
The family asks that any donations be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or St. Mary’s Medical Center, San Francisco.
Services were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral home.
Jesse J. Dimas
Jesse J. Dimas Sr. died May 25, 2004, suddenly in Salinas. He was 54.
Mr. Dimas moved to Gilroy 35 years ago following the crop harvest. He worked for the Gilroy Parks and Recreation for 30 years. He also worked for the Gilroy School Unified School District. He was a native of Chihuahua, Mexico.
He was the husband of the late Dolores Dimas.
He is survived by Jesse J. Dimas Jr. of Hollister, Maria Dimas-Gonzalez and her husband Efreen of Hollister and Joey Dimas of Gilroy; grandchildren Darren, Christian, Miguel and Chabela; siblings Santiago Dimas of Gilroy, Juanita Garcia-Dimas of Gilroy, Coy Dimas of Georgia and Mickey Speers of Georgia; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial Mass takes place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1, at St. Mary’s Church, Gilroy. Arrangements are under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
Carolee P. Vogel
Carolee P. Vogel died June 1, 2004, at Hospice House in Monterey. She was 65.
Born in Paterson, N.J., on April 10, 1939, she moved to Morgan Hill in 1987 to open ‘‘The Cosmic General Store.’’ She was a former advertising representative for the Morgan Hill Times and Gilroy Dispatch.
In 1998 she rededicated her life to be close to the ocean and mountains she loved in Pacific Grove.
Mrs. Vogel is survived by her sons Jan and Dean Losardo; daughter Gina Losardo; grandchildren Marisa Jr. and Jeremy Paduani and Priscilla Losardo; great-grandchildren Alena, Serena and Leonardo; and friends Eric Reichmuth and Bruce Fodor.
A celebration of her life will be held at noon on Saturday, June 19, at St. Mary’s Church in the Our Lady Chapel, Gilroy.
William “Bill” Vazquez
William “Bill” Vazquez died June 3, 2004, in San Jose at the age of 65.
He was the beloved husband of Beverly Vazquez for 38 years; loving father of five; grandfather of seven; and brother of two.
Funeral services took place June 7 at Cathedral of Faith, San Jose, under the direction of Oak Hill Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers donations will be accepted by the family.
Josefa Mariscal
Josefa Mariscal died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in Morgan Hill two days before her 67 birthday.
A native of Santa Rosalia, Baja Sur, Mexico, Mrs. Mariscal moved to Gilroy 38 years ago from Mexico and had been a resident ever since. She worked at Gilroy Foods in the 1960’s. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gilroy and loved to play bingo. She also was an Avon representative for many years.
She was the wife of Frank Mariscal of Gilroy; mother of Dora Mancilla and her husband Jorge of San Diego, Irma Fregoso of Texas and Eduardo Nunez and his wife Anita of Mexico; grandmother of Gabriel and David Gonzalez and many others in Mexico and Texas. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers and two sisters.
Services were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.
Paulline D. Burrows
Paulline D. Burrows, born Sept. 3, 1917, in Aberdeen, Wash., died June 9, 2004.
She was a retired employee of the Cambrian School District in San Jose.
She is survived by daughters Dalene and her husband Rodney Lusby of Centralia, Wash.; Beverly and her husband Richard Mercurio of Morgan Hill; and Diane and her husband Bill Hunter of San Juan Bautista. Pauline also leaves eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew L. Burrows.
Anthony ‘Tony’ Donald Saso
Anthony ‘Tony’ Donald Saso died June 10, 2004, at the age of 92.
Born in Portland, Oregon, to the late Joseph and Mary Saso, Tony moved to Campbell with his family in 1922, eventually settling in the Coyote Valley in 1927. Tony was a man of many loves, none more than his wife, Rose, and his family. In the early years of their marriage, Tony and Rose created Caldo Oil Co., delivering fuel and supplies to farmers throughout Santa Clara County. Later he was one of the original owners of the Gilroy Motor Co. A Realtor with Fortune Realty in San Jose, Tony also farmed potatoes in Washington state and in San Jose on Taylor and Market Street. All the while he continued to farm throughout Santa Clara County.
In Coyote Valley, his true love, Tony and his father Joseph were the first farmers to sell fruit retail on Monterey Highway. As his commercial farming business declined, Tony continued to farm his yard - everything you could imagine. He raised fava beans, avocados, olives, oregano, oranges, lemons, various vegetables, roses and other flowers. He canned Sicilian olives, hot peppers and harvested oregano, sharing his labor of love with everyone. Somewhere in his life he fell in love with coupons and shopping. He could have won any “Price is Right” game ever held. He had a stockpile room equal to Costco.
In his last years, his primary labor was to care and nurture his wife, Rose, back to health after a series of small stroke’s left her handicapped. He helped restore her vision, handwriting, walking and her strength to its current level, until his personal health deteriorated. He was a strong, determined, tough person yet a loving always-smiling friend, so proud of all the friends he made throughout his lifetime.
The development of Coyote Valley was always on his mind. He believed a man’s word and a signed contract, which he entered into with the city of San Jose in 1958, that annexed his property into the city of San Jose. He realized agriculture was no longer profitable and a new horizon was being formed in Coyote Valley. He loved to see the Bailey Avenue interchange and the Calpine power plant taking shape. He looked forward to someday developing his own property.
The love of this country was very central in his life. The love of his church and his devotion to Jesus Christ was overwhelming. He said nightly prayers for all his family and friends.
Tony was able to accomplish all of these great things in his life because, in his words when people asked where he graduated from, he answered, “The School of Hard Work.”
He Is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 72 years, Rose E. Lima Saso; children Marie Saso of Campbell, Joanne (Dennis) McConnell of Saratoga, Yvonne (Dale) Bullock of Vallejo, Joseph of Boulder Creek, Kenneth (Anna) of Coyote Valley, Vincent (LaRita) of Gilroy; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Friends are invited to attend a Vigil Service at 7 tonight, June 15, at Lima Family Erickson, 710 Willow St, San Jose. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, at St. Catherine Church, 17400 Peak Ave., Morgan Hill. Interment will follow at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery.
