Jesus Camacho
Jesus Camacho died May 25, 2004, in Gilroy surrounded by his loving family.
He was the beloved husband of Jovita Camacho of Gilroy; father of Zulma and her husband Jesus Ornelas of Reno, Florentino and his wife Dalila Camacho of Los Banos, Noe and his wife Angelica Camacho of Morgan Hill, Isaias and his wife Debbie Camacho of Gilroy, Fabian Camacho of Gilroy and Fausto Orozco of Gilroy; grandfather of Jessica, Chelsea, Jesus, Anthony, Daniel, Cierra and Damian. He also is survived by seven brothers and sisters and many other family members and friends.
Visitation takes place at 2 p.m. today, May 28, at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy. Services take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Habing.
Veronika Niedra Poth
Veronika Niedra Poth died June 4, 2004, at her home in Morgan Hill after a six-month battle with acute myeloid leukemia.
She was the daughter of Jazeps and Paulina Niedra (”Reed”), born Aug. 14, 1926, on their homestead near Balvi, Latvia, the eighth of nine children.
In 1944 Latvia was occupied by German troops, but as the eastern front was collapsing and the Russian communists advanced west, her family fled the farm, leaving their possessions behind. In exile in northern Germany, she worked at a forced labor munitions plant for a time.
In 1949 Veronika and her older sister Melanija traveled by steamship to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, then by train to Toronto, where they spent a year as indentured servants, working as housemaids. Having established a foothold in the New World, they were eventually able to bring the rest of their family to Canada.
She attended Wellesley School Of Nursing in Toronto, Canada, and met her future husband at the nurses’ graduation ball in early 1953. She married Norbert Poth, a recent immigrant from Heidelberg, Germany, on Dec. 26, 1953 and they made their home in Toronto, while she worked as a registered nurse, helping to support her fledgling family.
While touring the United States by automobile in 1957, they bought an old homestead in Oregon where the family soon moved. Unable to find work in the area, they moved to San Francisco for two years, but in 1959 moved back to their country home. Veronika once again became a nurse and sole breadwinner while her husband attended Southern Oregon College in Ashland to retrain as a teacher. During this time they both became United States citizens.
In 1967 her husband landed a teaching position in Morgan Hill. During the early years there, Veronika helped supplement the family’s income by working in a local nursing home. She was the proud mother of two sons and an avid homemaker, delighting in decorating the small house they had bought at the end of Peak Avenue. Over the years she was an avid traveler, camper and hiker, and enjoyed opera, needlepoint, gardening, cooking and reading. She loved animals and until her death was accompanied by her faithful dog, Ladybug, who followed her like a shadow. When her eyesight began failing, she continued to enjoy books on tape from the public library. She was active in St. Catherine’s parish, volunteering to help stuff envelopes, launder altar linens, and later become a lay eucharist minister. Even as her health declined in later years she continued to attend daily mass.
Veronika and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in December 2003. Veronika was a superb listener and because of this had many friends and acquaintances wherever she traveled. She is remembered fondly by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Norbert; sons Andrew and Felix and his wife Pamela; grandchildren Eric and Angela, all of Morgan Hill; brother Alberts Niedra, sisters Rozalija Upenieks and Melanija Zvidrs of Toronto, Ontario; Anna Grizan of Windsor, Ontario; and Maria of Riga, Latvia.
Visitation and Vigil Service took place Monday at Johnson Funeral Home. Funeral service was this morning, June 7, at St. Catherine’s Churcy, followed by interment at Mount Hope Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1150 S. Bascom Ave., Suite 7A, San Jose, CA 95128-3509.
Peter Allemand
Peter Allemand of Gilroy died June 11, 2004.
Peter was born June 20, 1913, in San Juan Bautista He lived in Gilroy for the past 87 years. He attended Rucker, St. Mary's and Gilroy High School.
Peter first served as a sergeant in Company B. 184th Infantry in the National Guard then was called to duty during World War II where he received a battled field commission to first lieutenant in the U.S. Army and received two bronze stars. After the war Peter served in the Army reserves and worked his way up through the ranks to lieutenant colonel.
He enjoyed dancing and joined the Gilroy Gliders and Morgan Hill High Steppers folk and square dance clubs. Peter later served as a member of the Board of Education with the Rucker School District from 1959-1965 and also the Gilroy Unified School District from 1967-1988 where he was president from 1973-1975.
During his lifetime Peter was a rancher raising chickens, sheep and growing prunes.
He is survived by his cousin Francis Howson; brother-in-law Robert Howes; nieces and nephews, as well as many grand nieces and grand nephews.
He was the brother to the late Gerald Allemand and Josephine Howes.
Services, including Funeral Mass St. Mary's Church, were this morning, June 15. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
The family asks that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
Pauline D. Burrows
Pauline D. Burrows, born Sept. 3, 1917, in Aberdeen, Wash., died June 9, 2004.
She was a retired employee of the Cambrian School District in San Jose.
She is survived by daughters Dalene and her husband Rodney Lusby of Centralia, Wash.; Beverly and her husband Richard Mercurio of Morgan Hill; and Diane and her husband Bill Hunter of San Juan Bautista. Pauline also leaves eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew L. Burrows.
Zeke Belman
Zeke Belman, 62, died May 10, 2004, in Morgan Hill.
He was a longtime resident of Morgan Hill. He worked in Gilroy at Bob Lynch Ford. He went to school in Watsonville and was also in the Army. He will mostly be remembered by his vegetable garden that he planted every summer and shared with family and friends. Zeke was a faithful Sea Hawks fan. He would not miss a game.
He is survived by his two sons, Marlin (Zake) Belman and Jake Belman both of Washington state; brothers Vic Belman of San Martin and Dan Belman of Arizona; half-brothers and half-sisters and many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
The burial was Thursaday at the San Joaquin National Cemetery
in Gustine.
Carmen C. Bourdet
Carmen C. Bourdet died Monday, June 14, 2004, at the age of 85 in San Jose after a sudden illness.
A 29-year resident of Hollister, she was a member of the Children’s Home Society of Gilroy, now the Gilroy Assistance League, member of the San Benito County Cowbelles and the Republican Women of San Benito County. She was a homemaker very devoted to her family. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed cooking and gardening.
She is survived by her children Lorraine MacKenzie of Sebastapol; John Bourdet and his wife, Tina, of Hollister; DeeCee Donati and her husband Bill of Hollister; and Jeff Bourdet of Hollister; grandchildren Shelley Donati of Hollister, Adam Donati, his wife, Amy of Napa, John Donati of Hollister, Shawn Bourdet and his wife Audra of Hollister, Wyatt, Cody and Carson Bourdet, all of Hollister, and Aimee Bourdet of Hollister; great-grandmother of Garrett and Tucker Bourdet, both of Hollister; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Carmen was preceded in death by her husband, Louis E. Bourdet, who died in September 2000. She was also preceded in death by her three sisters Catherine and Maria Bidart and Celina Gomez.
A memorial services was June 17 in the chapel of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home, Hollister.
Arrangements for cremation were under the direction of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home and Crematory in Hollister.
The family asks that any contributions be made to either the Sacred Heart School Foundation, Visiting Nurses Association or the San Benito County Saddlehorse Association Museum.
