Zella Sawyer passed away peacefully on Oct. 5, 2005 in Roseburg, Oregon. Zella was born Nov. 12, 1933 to Elmer and Pearl Neel in Merced, California, the youngest of four girls.
Mrs. Sawyer had a full and adventurous life. After graduating from Merced High in 1952, she attended college in Fresno. Zella then worked for the CIA, first in  Washington, D.C. and then in Germany. Her travel to and from Europe was by ocean liner, starting her love of luxury ocean cruises and travel in general. Coming back to the states, Zella married Wayne Sawyer, her long time high school sweetheart in December 1957. Zella and Wayne lived in Pensacola Florida, as well as Fullerton, Davis, Modesto and Woodland before settling in Winters in 1963.
A longtime Winters resident, Mrs. Sawyer was known for her community service and as a great friend to all. She was active in the community, helping at her children’s schools and after school activities, serving her church as an elder and secretary and helping to raise money for the Winters Community Center. In 1984 she was selected Citizen of the Year in Winters. She traveled extensively to many far off places, often taking friends and family with her.
Relatives and friends describe Mrs. Sawyer as a thoughtful and generous person and who was loved by all who knew her. She shared her lifelong passion of reading by volunteering at local schools reading to children.
Mrs. Sawyer is survived by her children, Brian Sawyer and wife Stacey of Carmichael, Diane Young and husband Frank Young of Winters, and Andra Sawyer and husband Michael Mc Gunnigle of  Washington, DC; grandchildren, Patrick, Ashley and Katherine Sawyer of Carmichael, and Corbin and Emma Young of Winters.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Pioneer Presbyterian Church on Friday, Oct.. 14, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow at the Winters Community Center. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations to be sent to your local Humane Society.

Stacie E. Cook passed away on Sept. 19, 2005 in Sonoma. Born in Woodland on May 25, 1964 to Harry and Lana Darlene Cook, she was 41 years old.
Ms. Cook was involved in the nursing field for the last 15 years, and most recently was employed as a psychiatric assistant. She grew up in Winters and went to Winters schools.
She is survived by her children, Christopher Cook of Carmichael, and Candis Cook of Tacoma,  Washington; siblings, Laurie Curry (Donald) of Bartlett, Tennessee; Kevin Cook (Bobbi) of  Oklahoma City,  Oklahoma; twin brother Tracy Cook of  Oklahoma City,  Oklahoma; Beverly Dyer (Scott) of Dixon; fiance Mitch Butler of Sonoma; numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held on Monday, Sept. 26, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the Winters Cemetery in Winters.

Marion Patterson Fernandez passed away in Fairfield on Friday, Nov. 3, 2006 at the age of 101. She was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Sept. 16, 1905 and married her beloved late husband Norman Andrew Fernandez in 1942. Marion was a teacher in her younger years and moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1952 where she was an actress in many plays and movies.
She is survived by her daughter Linn Myer and son-in-law Paul Myer of Winters, grandchildren Pamela Castle of Annapolis, Maryland and James Castle of Antioch as well as five great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held on Nov. 19 in Mendocino County.

Anthony Kahikina of Winters passed away suddenly on Nov. 4, 2006. Born on July 25, 1990 in Hawaii, he was 16. Anthony was in the 10th grade at Winters High School, and participated in wrestling. He enjoyed skateboarding, video games, rock music and animals, and family members described him as a “people person.”
He is survived by his mother, Terri Kahikina of Winters; half-brothers, Leland Lopez of Winters, Michael Lopez of Sacramento and Johnny Hernandez of San Jacinto; half-sister Latasha Kendrix of San Jacinto; half-sister Trina Williams and family of Sacramento; half-sister Jessie (last name unknown) of Sacramento; niece Alexis Kendrix and nephew Sean Kendrix of San Jacinto.
Funeral services are pending and the family is in need of financial assistance to make arrangements. A memorial fund has been created in Anthony’s name at First Northern Bank in Winters, and anyone who wishes to help may donate.

Joan Dyck of Winters died on Oct. 24, 2006 in Vacaville following a brief illness. She was 75.
A farmer’s wife and homemaker who raised her family for 45 years in Davis, she was born Feb. 6, 1931 in Coalinga, to Russell and Erla Cook. She was an avid reader and gardener, and enjoyed making music, cooking, spending time at the beach, birdwatching and the company of her family. She was a lifetime member of the San Luis Obispo Historical Society.
She is survived by daughters Jane Marie Dyck of Winters and Cathy Ann McPhillips of Arbuckle; son, Michael Earl Dyck of Winters; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Rudolph Henry Dyck, sister Geraldine Claborn and brother Roger Cook.
A graveside service was held on Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. at First Menonite Cemetery (Willow Creek) in Paso Robles. Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Dyck’s name to the San Luis Obispo Historical Society.

James Elbert Rollins passed away in Sacramento, California on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006 after a lengthy battle with lymphatic cancer. He was born on Oct. 16, 1921 in Cleburne,  Texas, the youngest of four children of James Fletcher and Lillie May Allen Rollins. He and his family moved from Cleburne to Monticello, California in 1923 where his father continued to farm.
Mr. Rollins graduated from Winters High School in 1940. He married Naoma, the love of his life, on April 12, 1942, in Reno, Nevada. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force in 1942 and served in the European Theater based in England as a member of the 9th Bomber Command Group 322nd Bomber, 452nd Squadron. As a B-26 Bomber pilot, he completed 67 missions and among his commendations were four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle East Campaign Medal. His tenure of almost 25 years with Bank of America began in 1940 and was continued in 1945 after his separation from the USAF. He left banking to pursue a career specializing in commercial real estate with the firms of Wright and Kimbrough,  Jones Brand and Hullin, and led the firm of Rollins Realty until his retirement in the early 1980s.
Mr. Rollins is survived by his wife of 65 years, Naoma Mae Sidwell Rollins of Sacramento; daughter, Kathlene Ann Rollins of Auburn; son and daughter-in-law David Sidwell and Jennie Albin Brown Rollins of Tallahassee, Florida and Sacramento, California; grandchildren David Jonathan Tracy of Qatar, Kara Kathlene Tracy Jenkins and husband, Loren Pernell Jenkins of Elk Grove, and Brooks Kathlene Rollins of Tallahassee, Florida; great-grandchildren: Tristin and Brendon Jenkins of Elk Grove; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Marvin Edwin Rollins, and sisters Ila Mae Woodin and Nona Lou Davis.
Graveside services and interment will be held Friday, Nov. 3, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. at Winters Cemetery in the Sidwell Family Plot, with The Reverend Richard Beach officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in James’ memory to Sutter Hospice, 2800 L Street, Suite 400, Sacramento, CA 95816.
Arrangements are by Wiscombe’s Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D Street, Davis, CA 95616, 758-5500).

Miriam E. Young passed away Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at the age of 93. Born April 11, 1912 in Commerce,  Texas. She enlisted in the Navy in 1943, serving as a WAVE until the end of World War II. After her military service, she pursued her doctorate in English Education at Denver University, Colorado. She moved to Sacramento in 1958 to teach at American River Community College where she became the Dean of the English Department, holding that position for over 20 years. She loved traveling. In her retirement, she drove cross-country, accompanied by her mother, and visited several European countries, including Italy, Spain, England, Germany and Austria.
She is survived by her sisters, Jeanne Wheeler of Vacaville, her sister-in-law Nell “Rusty” Young of Winters; her nieces Melinda Cooke and her husband John of Arlington, Virginia; Jan Dunham and her husband DuWayne of Los Angeles, Nancy Young and Elizabeth Coman and her husband Robert all of Winters; her nephews Jim Wheeler of Seattle,  Washington, David Young of Reno, Nevada, Frank Young and his wife Diane and Bert Young all of Winters, along with many great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m., at Epiphany Episcopal Church, 300 West Street, Vacaville with Father Steven J. Leonetti officiating. Contributions can be made in the name of Dr. Miriam E. Young to the American River College Foundation, 4700 College Oak Drive, Sacramento, CA 95841. Contributions will be used for scholarships.

Winters resident Harold LeBoy passed away on Sept. 14, 2005. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, he was 87 years old. A graduate of the University of Illinois with a degree in communications, Mr. LeBoy worked as a pilot instructor for the Army Air Corp in Kansas during World War II. He moved to California in the 1950s and opened his own business in sound communications. He moved to the Winters area in 1970 and was a member of the Solano Sheriff’s Posse for 30 years.
He is survived by his significant other of 37 years, Thelma Brennan, and her children Thomas Brennan of Seattle,  Washington and Michael Brennan and Mary Cooper, both of Winters; son, Peter LeBoy of Palo Alto; daughters, Sandy LeBoy of Palm Springs and Lindy Smallwood of Danville; and numerous grandchildren.
Mr. LeBoy’s body was donated to science, and no services were held at his request.

Becky Mitchell, who was born in Fairfield, CA on April 28, 1963 died at St. Luke Hospital in San Francisco on September 11, 2005 due to a long illness. Mitchell was raised and attended school in Winters, CA. She is survived by her parents Josefina, of Willows and John Mitchell of Knights Landing, brother Jonathan Mitchell of  Washington, sister Vanessa and her husband Patrick Throop of Caldwell, Idaho, her children Sylvia of Chico, Maria and Jonathan of Willows. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Her brother Christopher Ian Mitchell preceded her in death. A Christian burial service will be held for her on September 26, 2005 at St. Anthony’s Church in Winters, beginning with a rosary at 10:30 a.m., a mass at 11, and a burial service at the Winters Cemetery.

Dorothy W. (Brewer) Morales passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2005 peacefully at Sutter Davis Hospital after a short illness. She was 75 years old.
Ms. Morales was born April 16, 1930 in Murfreesburo, Tennessee to Charlie and Bessie Robinson. She married John Howard Brewer, who preceded her in death in April 1970, on October 16, 1945. On March 1, 1975, she married Frank S. Morales, who preceded her in death on February 20, 1994. She lived in Vacaville from 1964 to 1975, when she moved to Winters where she would live until her death.
Dorothy is survived by her loving children Polly Medendrop and her husband Lewis of Muskegon, Michigan, Annette Nations and her husband Bill, of Winters, Johnny Brewer and his wife Donna of Winters, Wayne Brewer and his wife Lena of Vacaville, her sisters Irene Maldordo of Winters, and Frances Brown of Murfreesburo, Tennessee, her step-children Michael Morales of Oregon, Terry Morales and his wife Anessa of Vacaville, Sandy Mendoza and her husband Jesus F. Jr. of Woodland, Tina Covington and her husband Richard of Woodland, and Roni Morales of Woodland.
Dorothy was very thoughtful, generous, and loved by all that knew her. She was known as “Mom” to everyone. She enjoyed taking trips to Reno. Dorothy retired from Basil in 1985. She was employed with Barry and Linda Boone of Dixon for 17 years until her death.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 23 at 11 a.m. at the Winters Cemetery. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made to the family at P.O. Box 1118, Winters, CA.

William D (Bill) Parkhurst died Sept. 15, 2005 at Sutter Davis Hospital after a brief illness. He was born May 24, 1955 in Mt Clemens, Michigan. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a graduate of Paradise Valley College. Most recently he was employed as a residential realtor with Coldwell Banker in Dixon, California. He was a member of the Winters Rotary Club and took great pride in the fact he was the son-in-law of the late Dr Ernie Young, a charter member of the Winters Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Young of Winters; son Mitchell and daughters Riki and Cathryn, all of Phoenix, Arizona, and daughter Jamie of Santa Cruz; parents, Jack and Marjorie, brothers, Edward and Cliff, and grandmother Margaret Woosley, all of Oregon. He was preceded in death by his brother Jonathan and sister Diane.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation in Davis.
