Louise M. Frye
Louise M. Frye, beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother, died April 17, 2004, at St. Louise Hospital.
She was born Dec. 13, 1909, in Cutler, Maine, where she lived until her early 20s when she moved to Bradley, Maine. Louise was a cosmetologist and worked in Bangor, Maine, and San Jose throughout her career. She lived in Maine until her early 60s at which time she moved to Morgan Hill to be with her children and grandchildren. She retired in the late 60s.
She is survived by her daughters Sandy J. Frye (Arthur) Brown and Pamela Suzanne Frye Moats, all of Morgan Hill; granddaughters Cindy L. Brown, Penny A. Brown, Candy S. Brown Nelson, Jessica Lynn Moats; grandson-in-law Steven Nelson of San Jose; and great-grandchildren Amanda J. Hiller and Hannah K. Nelson, both of San Jose.
A graveside service took place Wednesday, April 21.
Emmett W. Smith Sr.
Emmett W. Smith Sr. died July 26, 2004, in Gilroy. He was born 78 years ago in Drew County, Ark.
Mr. Smith was a Morgan Hill resident since 1959 and was a masonry contractor who generously donated his time and skills to various projects throughout the community.
Emmett was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II and was stationed on the Air Force repair ship Brigadier General Alfred J. Lyon as a high-speed radio operator in the South Pacific. When needed, he also served in the Thirteenth Air Force, flying missions over Borneo and Japan delivering medical supplies after the atomic bomb was dropped. He was the Past Master of the Morgan Hill Masonic Lodge, Past Grand Bible Bearer of the Grand Masonic Lodge of California, Past Patron of Manzanita Chapter OES, member of Gilroy Masonic Lodge, member Magnolia Chapter OES, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Gilroy and Sons of the American Revolution.
Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marion Smith of Morgan Hill; children Emmett W. Smith Jr. of Larkspur, Marion Kathleen Smith of Morgan Hill, Eva Susanne and her husband David Pribyl Sr. of Gilroy, and Kirsten Tindall Smith and her husband Eric Olson of Morgan Hill; grandchildren Janelle Renee, Christopher Adam, Laura Darlene, James Mitchell, David Warren and Brian Webster; great-grandson Noah Emmett; sister Ludie Mae Bradford of Washington, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services takes place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1 at the Gilroy Masonic Lodge.

Albert Simon Vedovelli
Albert Simon Vedovelli, 87, died July 24, 2004, at the Veterans Hospital in Palo Alto.
Albert graduated from Pittsburgh High School and then attended St. Mary’s College for a year before transferring to San Jose State, where he played on the famous, undefeated 1939 football team. In 1940 he enlisted in the Army and served during World War II in the South Pacific.
After the war he returned to San Jose State. Upon graduating, he coached football for Linden High School in Linden, Calif., and then returned to San Jose to work for the Prudential Insurance Co. Albert was with them until he retired in 1980 at which time he moved to Morgan Hill. In Morgan Hill he pursued his passion for golf, cheered for his beloved San Jose State football team and trained his beautiful standard poodles. He was also a longtime member of the Italian FBI Club.
Albert is survived by his loving wife, Helen; brother Dante Vedovelli; sisters Libby Junta and Jean Allen; nieces Carolyn Junta, Francine McMillan, Cathy Crippen and Sandra Lee Patton; nephews Gary Allen and Dennis Vedovelli; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
His life will be celebrated in a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 31 at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, Morgan Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to St. John the Divine Building Fund.
Noreen Adele Johnson
Noreen Adele Olson Johnson, born March 18, 1939, died June 27, 2004, in Morgan Hill. She was 65.
Noreen was loved by all who knew her and she will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her children Robert and Alice Johnson; grandchildren Travis, Jessica and Jason Johnson; and dear friends Nancy Ackerman and Karen Robinson.
Private cremation was under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
Janice M. Loek
Janice M. Loek, 70, died Friday, June 25, 2004, at her residence.
She was born on April 17, 1934, in North Dakota. Formerly a resident of San Jose and Morgan Hill, Janice had lived in Manteca for the last seven years. She loved calling bingo at the Manteca Senior Center. She and her husband, Barney, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in February with friends and family, followed by a trip to Hawaii.
Mrs. Loek is survived by her husband, Byron “Barney” Loek of Manteca; children Debra, Randy, Diane (McBee), Rick and Wendy; sisters Beverly and Mary Lee; brother Gary; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Leeanne M. Seward
Leeanne Marie Seward, born Jan. 3, 1981, died July 18, 2004.
The young and beautiful Leeanne was well loved and will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her dynamic personality left a lasting impression on everyone she met and put joy in hearts of family and friends. Leeanne was a student at Gavilan College and was currently working as an account executive at Hamilton Financial.
She is survived by her mother Karen Seward of Gilroy; her father Jay Seward of Henderson, Nev.; grandmother Lucy Fryman of Morgan Hill; uncle Marv and wife Margit; cousins Colleen, Megan, Kristina and Kyle of Fremont; uncle Jerry Fryman of Bakersfield; uncle Gary Fryman of Morgan Hill; Lynnette Seward of Taos, N.M.; and her boyfriend Jeff Kahn of Morgan Hill.
The viewing takes place at noon on Tuesday, July 27, with a memorial service at 1 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home.
Gary L. Mann
Gary L. Mann died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Santa Clara Kaiser Hospital from complications associated with lung cancer. He was 63.
Born and raised in Wadena, Ind., he was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in Vietnam from 1963-67. Following his discharge he settled in San Jose and married his wife, Cyndi, in 1982 at Lake Tahoe. He worked as a sales engineer with RF Associates North in Sunnyvale for 14 years.
Mr. Mann was avid golfer playing with the Anritsu golf team and the Happy Hackers. He enjoyed the San Francisco 49ers and Giants and was a member of St. Mary Church, Gilroy having completed the Right of Christian Initiation in 2002. He loved his family.
He is the beloved husband of Cyndi Mann of Gilroy; father of Lisa Serrano of Hollister and Terra Murry and her husband, Jerry of Ft. Polk, La.; grandfather “Papa” of Justen Lopez and Zachery Serrano, both in Hollister, and Shelby and Tyler Murry both of Ft. Polk; brother of Lois Lane and her husband, Louis of Rensselaer, Ind., and the late Donald Mann; uncle of Cindy Foster, Ed Lane, and Pam Jordan, all of Rensselaer, Ind., and David and Ronnie Mann both of Monticello, Ind., Michelle and Ron Loghry of Utah, Rick, Delina and Sandy Carrasco of Washington, David and Jeremy Ramirez of Washington, Corey Lalone and Alison Amend, both of Washington, Sara, Jamie, Jake and Elizabeth Wade of Utah, Joseph and David Lalone of San Jose, Vincent and Sam Sainz, Adriana Trevino, Eric Harrod all of Wash.; son-in-law of Angelina Lalone of Wash.; brother-in-law of Michael Lalone and his wife Gwen of San Jose, Mitchell Lalone of San Jose, Tony Lalone of Missouri, Lisa Hoag and her husband, Matthew of Florida, Diana Carrasco and her husband, Joe, Beverly Ramirez and her husband,Tony, Mona Amend, Christine Harrod and her husband, Eric, all of Washington, and Patricia Jackson and her husband Randy of Texas.
Services were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy.

Harry Frederick Schumann Jr.
Harry Frederick Schumann Jr. died July 16, 2004 in San Jose at the age of 80.
Mr. Schumann was born in Palo Alto and attended San Jose High School and San Jose State University. He served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman. I went to the Aleutian Islands and worked in the radio stations at Kodiak and Dutch Harbor.
Mr. Schumann moved to the area to become manager of the Standard Station in Coyote and one in Gilroy.
He married Alice Eileen Jose in June 1952. The couple moved to Gilroy in 1959.
Mr. Schumann then worked as an electronic technician, test lab supervisor and test engineer, testing explosives to meet government specifications, at Teledyne McCormick/Selph in Hollister for almost 20 years. He left there in 1979 to work as a quality engineer at Lockheed Missile and Space Co. in Sunnyvale. He retired from Lockheed in March, 1992.
“I enjoyed my radio work so much in the Navy that I got my Amateur Radio License after College in 1957. It a very rewarding hobby and I have made many friends during the years that I have been active,” Mr. Schumann once said.
His amateur radio call sign was K6HWR. He was one of the founding members of the Gabilan Amateur Radio Club (GARC), and was instrumental in the communications set-up at the Garlic Festival, cooperating with local law enforcement in traffic and crowd control.
Mr. Schumann was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons (Keith Lodge), serving as Master in 1979, a member of the Magnolia Chapter (#45) OES, and a member in good standing of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II. He has been an elder at The Gilroy Presbyterian Church, past member of the Gilroy Elks Lodge and a member of Theta Chi fraternity.
Besides his wife Alice Eileen, Mr. Schumann is also survived by his sister Marian Minninger of San Jose children Steven “Sonny” Schumann and his wife Julie of Arroyo Grande, Valerie Schumann Bowe and her husband Michael Bowe of Los Angeles, Virginia Schumann, and Robert H. Schumann; grandchildren Melissa and Kathryn Alatorre and Robert Bimbi III of Gilroy, Jennell, Angela and Nicholas Tizzano of Arroyo Grande and Michael and Sean Bowe of Los Angeles; nieces Judy Jackson, Diane Jacks, Cheryl Gould, Susan Supan, Liane Schreffler, Caryn Kenny and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Leona Schumann.
Memorial service takes place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3 at Gilroy Presbyterian Church.
The family asks that any donations be made to the Gilroy Presbyterian Church or to the Shriners’ Children's Hospital.
