Alberto Rivera Ojeda

Alberto Rivera Ojeda died Thursday, July 22, 2004, in Morgan Hill at the age of 78.

Born on April 22, 1926, in Zacatecas, Mexico, he moved to Los Banos in 1960. By 1962, he was able to bring his family from Mexico to California and they settled in Gilroy. Mr. Ojeda was an A’s and Giants fan. He enjoyed watching boxing events and playing a few hands of cards. Back in Mexico, his horsemanship skills were well known throughout his home region of Zacatecas. He retired from Gilroy Foods in 1985. He and his wife, Berta, became U.S. citizens in 1997. He loved his family and worked hard to be able to support them and to make a better life possible. He was best known for his generosity. No family member in need was ever turned away.

He was the beloved husband, for 53 years, of Berta Rosales Ojeda; loving father of Anita Espinoza and husband John of Gilroy, Ogarita Ojeda of Salinas, Alberto Ojeda Jr. and his wife Tilly Owaleon-Ojeda of San Jose, and Jesus “Jess” Ojeda and his wife Tricia Garcia-Ojeda of Morgan Hill; grandfather of Adrian and Phillip Espinoza, Joseph Alex and Jairo Carranza of Gilroy, Emiliano and Eliana Ojeda of Morgan Hill; great-grandfather of Isaies Carranza of Gilroy; and brother of Antonio Ojeda and wife Jesusita, Luz Aguayo, Maria Concepcion Esquivel all of Zacatecas, Mexico, Sixto Ojeda, Jose Ojeda and Sedelia, Baudelio Ojeda and wife Eva, all of Gilroy. Mr. Ojeda also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews and close family friends.

Mr. Ojeda was preceded in death by his brother Lucio Ojeda and his parents Santiago and Chana Ojeda.

Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Gilroy under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

Lowell E. Erickson

Lowell E. Erickson, 80, died Monday, July 26, 2004, after a lengthy illness at his home in Hollister.

Born in Crookston, Minn., he lived in Santa Clara for 30 years, moving to Morgan Hill for four years then moving to Hollister eight years ago. He was a retired accountant and worked for Fairchild Semiconductor for 26 years. Prior to that he worked for General Motors as an accountant.

He was the husband of Lorna M. Erickson of Hollister father of Jody Ruble and her husband Randy of Hollister; grandfather of Melissa and Madeline Ruble, both of Hollister; brother of Dr. Virgil Erickson of Morgan Hill and the late, Kensel, Everett and Curtis Erickson. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass took place at 11 a.m. today, July 30 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hollister. Burial and graveside services follow at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park in Gilroy.

Arrangements were under the direction of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home in Hollister.

The family asks that any contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Gregory “Greg” Kroeger

Gregory “Greg” Kroeger died July 25, 2004, in an automobile accident, at the age of 41.

Greg was born and raised in Gilroy and graduated from Gilroy High School. He was in the construction trade for more than years and was employed by Farotte Construction for many of those years.

Greg is survived by his daughter Kaitlyn Kroeger of Gilroy; and parents Bobbie Ueki of Fresno and Marvin Ueki of Gilroy, and Bill and his wife Peggy Kroeger of Shady Cove, Ore. He is the grandson of Toshiko Ueki of Gilroy; brother of Michael and his wife Mary Kroeger of Gilroy, Kenny Kroeger of Gilroy, Nicole and her husband Michael Buessing of Fresno, Jim Calbreath of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Susan and her husband Christian von Beverfoerde of Fresno; uncle of John and Alyssa Kroeger of Gilroy and Christopher and Kendal Buessing of Fresno. Greg also is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many close friends.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. today, July 30, at the Gilroy Presbyterian Church, 6000 Miller Ave. under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

The family would appreciate donations to a trust fund for Greg’s daughter Kaitlyn at the Wells Fargo Bank, Gilroy. Acct# 5814269782.

Odessa I. Taboada

Odessa I. Taboada died July 22, 2004, after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. She was born August 25, 1948, in Columbus, Ga., and lived in Morgan Hill.

Odessa is survived by daughters Tina Case and her husband James, Pam Taboada, Ivy Taboada; son Dewayne Long and his wife Jennifer; loving grandchildren Tiana, Amanda, Cody, Anna-Marie, Jessica, Daniel, Jordan, Lyndsey, Steven, Leah, Julia and Joseph; and siblings Sandra Shiver, Shavon Desmond, Jesse Tanton and Art Tanton.

She was preceded in death by her sister Cornelia Tracewell.

Services will be held Saturday, July 31, at 10 a.m., at St. Catherine’s Church.

Marzella Martinez Ruiz

Marzella Martinez Ruiz of Gilroy, died August 1 at the age of 80.

Ruiz was a member of New Life Fellowship in Hollister. She enjoyed spending time with her family, music, dancing, and watching cooking shows and “Novelas”. She will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Enrique (Henry) T. Ruiz; children Bea Gorena of Hollister and her husband Joe, Henry C. (Hank) Ruiz of Gilroy, and Gloria Ramirez of Morgan Hill and her husband Vince; grandchildren John Gorena and his wife Carol, Jacquelyn Gorena, and Jacob Gorena; great granddaughter Jade Gorena; sister Lita Garcia and her husband Pete, sister Connie Ordaz, brother Peter Martinez and his wife Dolores and many nieces, nephews and other family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and twin brothers.

As were her wishes, private services have been held.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Diabetes Association. Arrangements under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

Gilbert “Pelon” Saldana

Gilbert “Pelon” Saldana, 35, died Aug. 3, 2004, in Hollister after a brief battle with cancer.

Pelon was a Gilroy native and a self-employed electrician. He had a great sense of humor and will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, April Saldana of Hollister; children Nicholas Saldana of Gilroy, Benjamin and Jazmyne Saldana of Hollister; mother Helen Madrid of Gilroy; father Gilberto Saldana of Hollister; sisters Della Ramos of Gilroy and Dolores Saldana of Gilroy; brother Ray Ramos of Los Banos; grandparents Manuel and Tomasa Saldana of Hollister and Genaro Perez of Gilroy; mother- and father-in-law James and Armida Santos of Morgan Hill; brother-in-law James Santos of Santa Cruz; sister-in-law Amy Santos of Morgan Hill; and many aunts, uncles, of Gilroy and Hollister, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his nana Rita Perez and infant son Vincente Saldana.

Funeral Mass was this morning, Aug. 6, at St. Mary’s Church followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gilroy. Arrangements were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

Erin Nicole Kinkel

Erin Nicole Kinkel died Aug. 1, 2004, in Gilroy from injuries received in an automobile accident. She was 15.

Erin was an honor roll student, a varsity cheerleader at Gilroy High School, a blue belt in taekwondo and a competitive gymnast. She was also active in the Theater Arts programs, STAR, and South Valley Civic Theater.

She is survived by her loving parents Scott and Miki Kinkel of Gilroy; sisters Megan, Danielle and Catherine; grandparents Laura and Sy Gelman of San Jose, Betty Kinkel of Clear Lake, Michael Matecki of Clear Lake and Sarah Kinkel of San Jose; aunts and uncles Kyle Kinkel of Michigan, Ira and Gloria Finkelstein of San Jose and Bill and Kim McLean of Fremont; and her boyfriend and her love Jason Cole of Gilroy. She also is survived by numerous cousins and friends.

Funeral services were Thursday, Aug. 5, at Oakwood Country School in Morgan Hill. Burial was at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.

Arrangements were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

The family asks that any donations be made to to the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
