Manuel Gutierrez
Manuel “Manny” Gutierrez died Jan. 10, 2003, in Santa Cruz.
Manuel was born in Santa Barbara on Nov. 26, 1923. He grew up in Morgan Hill and graduated from Live Oak High School. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Lewis where he trained medics for combat in World War II. He boxed Golden Gloves as “Kid Martin.” After his discharge from the service, he became a cement mason and was a member of Local #300 of the Cement Mason and Plasters Union of San Jose for 54 years. He became an expert at designing free-hand style cement church crosses.
He was a member of the First Hispanic Masons of Morgan Hill and the Coyote Sporting Clay Club, the American Water Fowl Conservation and Ducks Unlimited. He was a founding member of the Santa Cruz Fly Casters Chapter and taught fly fishing and fly-casting. He was a conservationist and naturalist who was also an avid bow hunter and tournament skeet and trap shooter.
In addition to being an enthusiastic outdoorsman, he was a black belt in Judo and Sensei for the Gilroy Community Dojo where he held classes for women and children as part of the Gilroy Community Recreation Department. Manuel loved to hunt deer and duck, and he will be greatly missed by all those who had the pleasure of hunting and working with him.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, children, stepchildren, grandchildren, mother, brothers and sisters and especially his black lab Joe and his champion mutt Megan. May his spirit forever roam free in the trees and valley of his beloved Alpine.
Manuel was the first born of Rose Gutierrez and the late Manuel Gutierrez of Morgan Hill; husband of Sally Gutierrez of Santa Cruz; father of Martin Gutierrez of Alameda, Luis Gutierrez and Evelyn Zuniga of Gilroy, Andrew and Marie Gutierrez of Hollister, Charles Gutierrez of Santa Rosa and Jesse Gutierrez of Modesto; grandfather of Brandy Juarez of Morgan Hill, Melissa, Vanessa, Jeremy and Rebecca Gutierrez of Gilroy, Terese, Sofina and Edward Valdez of Hollister, Victoria Gutierrez of Hayward, Russell Gutierrez of Santa Rosa, Jesse Gutierrez Jr. of Modesto, Angela Gutierrez of Watsonville, and Andrew, Stephanie and Manuel Gutierrez of Hollister; great-grandfather of David, Selena and Juan Pablo Juarez of Morgan Hill and Julia Sterling of Hayward; brother of Fred Gutierrez of San Diego, Julian Gutierrez and Natalie Velasquez of Hollister, Esperanta Romero of San Jose, Rose Williams of Santa Clara, Eva Kaufenburg of Salida and Dolores Grey of Hollister; brother to the late Frank and Mary Gutierrez; and father-in-law to Juan Zuniga of Gilroy, Ann-Marie Gutierrez of Santa Rosa and Debby Gutierrez of Gilroy.
A private memorial service is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Ducks Unlimited would be appreciated.
Polly Pennock
Polly Pennock died Jan. 12, 2003, from heart failure.
She was born Pauline Owens on April 15, 1931, in Talequah, Okla. She moved to California in 1962 and settled in Morgan Hill in 1977. Polly was a wonderful wife, mother and friend. She touched many people’s lives and was a source of strength, courage and love to her family and friends.
Polly enjoyed going for walks, fishing, playing with her grandchildren and being an avid cheerleader at their sporting events. She also loved to play golf and was a member of the ladies golf associations at Riverside and Santa Teresa, forming special bonds with many of her golfing partners.
Polly married Bud Blankenship; they had three children and were later divorced. She married Charles Pennock and they were happily married for 27 years.
Polly is survived by her daughter Debi Shaeffer; son-in-law Chuck; son Mike Blankenship; daughter-in-law Beth; brothers James Owens and Danny Owens; sisters Georgia Vance, Mary Owens and Lois Alexander; grandchildren Christopher and Elizabeth of Morgan Hill and Michelle and Matthew of Lewiston, Idaho; and numerous nieces, nephews and family members.
Polly was preceded in death by her son, Chuck Blankenship.
A memorial service was today, Jan. 17, at Advent Lutheran Church.
The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association, Western States Affiliate, One Almaden Blvd., Suite 500, San Jose, CA 95113-2214.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Johnson Funeral Home.
Kathryn Betty Downing
Kathryn Betty Downing, 51, died Jan. 9, 2003, in Nice where she had lived for the past two years caring for her mother.
A resident of Modesto, she was born in Palo Alto on Oct. 2, 1951, Kathryn lived in San Martin for 41 years. She graduated from Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill during 1969. She was a terrific mother and friend to many.
She is survived by her mother, Betty Blomquist of Nice; husband, Ken Downing of Modesto; sons Wayne Downing of Merced and Brett Downing of Nice; and brothers Wally Blomquist of Sanger and Greg Blomquist of Morgan Hill. She is also remembered by a special few who include Kim Cunningham of Merced, Debbie Phillips of Nice, and Marlayna Teschner of Lakeport.
Arrangements were by Jones Mortuary in Lakeport.
Oscar Burns
Oscar Burns, a longtime Gilroy resident, died Jan. 10, 2003, after a lengthy illness.
Oscar moved to Gilroy at the age of 14, attended Gilroy High School, did a short stint in the Air Force, returning to marry sweetheart Rosalie Perry. Oscar and Rosalie went on to raise seven children together. Oscar was often seen attending his children’s and then grandchildren’s sporting events.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, Rosalie, and infant daughter Tina. He was the beloved father of Ken Burns of Gilroy, Cindy and husband Paul Karpinski of Gilroy, Manuel and wife Nancy Burns of San Martin, Karen Ahumada of Gilroy, Robert and wife Vera Burns of Morgan Hill, Kristi and husband John of Sutter Creek, and David and wife Lisa Burns of Gilroy. He is survived by his grandchildren John and wife Amy Karpinski, Karah Karpinski, Jimmy Karpinski, Danielle Silva, Jordenne Burns, Jesus Burns, Lindsay Allumada, Jason Allumada, Zachary Burns, Griffin Burns, Andrew Winter, Matthew Winter, Katie Burns, Michael Burns and Anthony Burns. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Kody Karpinski and Sydney Karpinski his mother Gertie Phillips and brother Clark and wife Carol Dotson of Gilroy.
Funeral Services were Tuesday under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home. Burial followed at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.
Aurora Marie Berryman
Aurora Marie Berryman, a longtime businesswoman and member of a pioneer Gilroy farming family, died of a heart attack Monday, Jan. 13, at Saint Louise Regional Hospital. She was 85.
Mrs. Berryman suffered chest pains after attending the Stars on Ice ice skating event with her children Sunday night.
For many years, Mrs. Berryman was a Realtor in Gilroy, and served as president of both the San Jose and South County real estate boards.
Mrs. Berryman was born Nov. 15, 1917, in Cambria to Joseph and Pia “Rosie” Pacciorini, Swiss immigrants. In the early 1920s, the family settled permanently on a prune farm on Monterey Highway north of Gilroy.
Mrs. Berryman graduated from St. Mary’s Parochial School and Gilroy High School. She became a licensed beautician and owned her own shops for many years in Monterey and North Hollywood.
She became a real estate broker and later in life, a travel agent.
In addition to her leadership on the real estate boards, Mrs. Berryman was a board member of the California Association of Realtors, the Farm and Land Brokers and the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was also a past national and local chapter president of the Women’s Council of Realtors.
She was also active in and a board member of the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce and a Garlic Festival volunteer. She helped her children as a Blue Bird, Girl Scout, Campfire Girl and 4-H leader.
She enjoyed painting, stained glass and traveling to the Far East and especially to Switzerland to see her relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Albert P. and Charles M. Pacciorini.
She is survived by her son Arthur C. “Trip” Berryman III of Morgan Hill; daughter Pia Ann Berryman of Gilroy; grandchildren Bonnie Berryman of Portland, Ore., and Brooke Berryman of Sherwood, Ore.; nephews Albert Pacciorini of Hercules, John Pacciorini of Santa Clara and Michael Pacciorini of Long Beach; niece Sue Pacciorini of Davis; sister-in-law Elvira “Squeak” Pacciorini of Gilroy; and cousins, Norma and Bill Wilson of Gilroy, Pinky and Pat Tognetti of Gilroy; Walter and Ellen Rossi of Salinas, Hector Picchetti of Cupertino and Mario and Jerre Picchetti of Hollister.
Funeral Mass was this morning, Jan. 17, St. Mary Church in Gilroy followed by burial at St. Mary Cemetery.
The family asks that any donations be made to St. Mary School, 7900 Church St., Gilroy, or a favorite charity.
John ‘Jack’ Edward Schad
John ‘Jack’ Edward Schad died Aug. 15, 2004, in San Jose after a two-week battle with pneumonia. He was a devoted and beloved husband, father and grandfather.
Born Sept. 25, 1916, in San Jose to Louis and Cecile Schad, Jack was raised on the family prune orchard where he developed lifelong interests in horticulture, fishing, short-wave radio and music. Jack attended Bellamine High School and Santa Clara University before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II and the Korean War as an electronics instructor at Treasure Island, Washington D.C. and Mount Desert Island, Maine.
A respected and trusted business leader, Jack owned and operated wholesale electronic parts companies, Schad Electronics Supply and John E. Schad, Inc. Despite the demands of his businesses, Jack made time for his family, and delighted in outings to Santa Cruz and Capitola beaches, fishing on the Santa Cruz pier and in mountains and reservoirs, coveted family vacations at Silver Lake and back yard barbecues.
A licensed amateur radio operator from the age of 14, Jack spent a lifetime connecting with strangers around the world, though his first love was his family. With his unassuming, patient and gentle manner, innate curiosity and love of nature, Jack’s life was a shining example for his children and grandchildren.
A deeply spiritual man and devout traditional Catholic, Jack is survived by Marion Schad, his wife of 55 years; children Gerald L. Schad of La Mesa, Leslee Schad of West Grove, Penn., Laurie Schad of Essex Junction, Va, and Marita Roth of Morgan Hill; and nine grandchildren, Tom Schad, Eben and Joshua Kaplan, Peter, Paul and Michael Montane and Katie, Amy and Millie Roth.
Services will be held on Thursday, Aug.19, at 11am at Lima Family Santa Clara, 466 N. Winchester Blvd., Santa Clara. Interment immediately to follow at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery.
