Rose E. Lima Saso

Rose E. Lima Saso died Sept. 21, 2004.

Rose was born in Portland, Ore., on June 19, 1912, to Vincent and Josephine Lima. She moved to Morgan Hill in 1932 and was a longtime resident of Coyote Valley. Rose was married for almost 72 years to her late husband Anthony D. Saso.

She is survived by her children Marie Saso of Campbell, Joanne (Dennis) McConnell of Saratoga, Yvonne (Dale) Bullock of Vallejo, Joseph Saso of Boulder Creek, Kenneth (Anna) of Coyote Valley, and Vincent (La Rita) of Gilroy; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral Mass was Monday, Sept. 27, at St. Catherine’s Church followed by interment at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery. Arrangements were by Lima Family Mortuary, San Jose.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be appreciated in Rose Saso’s honor to St. Catherine’s School Tuition Assistance Fund, 17400 Peak Ave, Morgan Hill, CA 95037, and to Notre Dame High School, 596 S. 2nd St., San Jose, CA 95112.

Terry Hagan

Terry Hagan, 58, of San Martin, died Sept. 18, 2004, at home with his family.

He will be missed by Barbara, his wife; son Rob, daughters Emily and Laura; brother Jon; stepdaughter Amy; and five grandchildren. The loss also will be felt by his many friends at ArthoCare and, of course, his beloved golfing friends all over the country.

A memorial service took place at 2pm on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at  Johnson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.

Marvin Lyle Sheppard

Marvin Lyle Sheppard, born Feb. 17, 1937, died Oct. 29, 2004.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Norma Sheppard, and his daughters Jacalyn Steele and Gay Lynn Petishnok.

He was preceded in death by his son Perry James.

Friends are invited for visitation from 4-8pm Wednesday, Nov. 3, at  Johnson Funeral Home. Services take place at 1pm Thursday, Nov. 4, at the mortuary. Interment follows at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Hortencia L. Smoot

Hortencia L. Smoot died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at the age of 73.

Terry was a longtime resident of Morgan Hill and loved the home her second husband, “Smiley” Gallardo, bought for her. She worked for Rosscare polishing floors and putting smiles on patient’s faces.

Terry also owned and operated Hortencia’s Courtyard Restaurant, which later became Spero’s. Her main job, however, was raising her family while keeping an immaculate home.

Terry was preceded in death by Gallardo and Bob Smoot, her third husband, who owned Ernie’s Bar and Grill.

She leaves behind her daughter Laura Hernandez and her sons Paul Gallardo, Mike and Steve Monges, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Terry will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Services will be private.

Alvetta Y. Mondelli

Alvetta Y. Mondelli died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose after a sudden illness. She was 84.

She was born and raised in Jeannette, Penn., and graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. She enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and later married her husband in 1943. The couple moved to Gilroy in 1945 and have been residents there ever since. Mrs. Mondelli was a member of the St. Mary’s Parish, Italian Catholic Federation, Women in Touch, Wheeler Hospital and St. Louise Hospital auxiliaries and numerous bridge clubs. She also enjoyed going on cruises and traveling.

She is the wife of the late Joseph A. Mondelli (1986); mother of Michael J. Mondelli of Gilr-oy, JoAnn Mondelli Smith and her husband Dean of Lake Oswego, Ore., and Gloria Mondelli Pollock and her husband Edward of Gilroy; the grammie of Michael J. Mondelli of Gilroy, Monica S. Mondelli of Capitola, Jeffrey Smith and his wife Danielle of Sherwood, Ore., Ryan Smith of Seattle, Wash., Sara Smith of Pendelton, Ore., Joe Smith of Lake Oswego, Shelby Pollock of Gilroy and Tori Pollock of Gilroy; great-grandmother of Tyler Jeffrey Smith of Sherwood; the sister of Pearl Tangretti of Jeannette, Penn., and the late Art Yett, Elaine Bedont and Ruth Geyer; sister-in-law of Mimi Serafin of Gilroy and the late Rose Quartiroli, Eva Boyd and Louise Novak; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services took place Friday, Nov. 5, at St. Mary’s Church. Entombment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gilroy.

The family asks that any donations be made to St. Mary’s School or St. Louise Hospital auxiliaries.

Josie T. Romero

Josie T. Romero died peacefully at her home Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, after a lengthy battle with leukemia. She was 60.

Josie was born and raised in Eagle Pass,  Texas. She married her husband, Arturo, in 1967 and then moved to Gilroy. She later received her bachelor’s and master’s in social work from San Jose State University. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church.

She was the loving wife of Arturo Romero of Gilroy; loving mom of Diana Martinez and her husband Ruben of Gilroy and Arturo Romero Jr. and his wife Jean of Gilroy; dear grandmother of Matthew, Nicolas and Amanda Martinez, all of Gilroy, and Joshua and Juliana Romero, both of Gilroy; sister of Romelia Sanchez of Eagle Pass,  Texas; Macedonio Torralba of Eagle Pass, Amador Torralba of San Jose, Raul Torralba of Morgan Hill and Jesus Torralba of Merced. She also is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation takes place from 1-5:30pm on Monday, Nov. 8, at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy. Vigil Service follows at 7pm at St. Mary’s Church. Services take place at 9:30am on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the funeral home followed by Funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Church at 10am. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Lawrence “Larry” Dominguez

Lawrence “Larry” Doming-uez, 22, died Nov. 5, 2004, at his home.

Larry attended Burnett School in Morgan Hill and Gateway School in Gilroy. He was very well known for his hand games and his laughter.

He is the loving son of Georganna and Howard Kelly; and the brother of Bo and Stephen, all of Gilroy.

Vigil Services take place at 7pm on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at Habing Family Funeral Home. Services are at 9:30am on Thursday, Nov. 11, at the funeral home. Graveside service follows at10am at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park.

Arrangements were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

Raymond A. Barbosa

Raymond A. Barbosa died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, in Hollister. He was born in California and was 78 years old.

Mr. Barbosa was a longtime resident of San Juan Bautista who served in the U.S. Army during WW II and worked in trucking service for many years. He attended Mission San Juan Bautista, liked woodworking, fishing and camping and spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed traveling the United States and Mexico with his brothers.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Rodolfo Barbosa of Redding, Jesus and Linda Barbosa of Morgan Hill, Art Barbosa of San Juan Bautista, Virginia Barbosa of San Juan Bautista and Esther and Paul Hill of Hollister; brothers and sister, John Barbosa of Santa Maria, Frank Barbosa of Gilroy, Linda Casillas of Reno, Nev., Phillip Barbosa of Shafter and Ray Barbosa of Modesto; his close friend and companion, Carmen Rodriguez of San Juan Bautista; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Barbosa was preceded in death by his wife, Esperanza, and a grandson, Nicholas Barbosa.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am, today, Nov. 9, at Old Mission San Juan Bautista. Friends can gather at the funeral home at 9:15am for a procession to the Church.

Interment and military rites will follow the Mass at San Juan District Cemetery in San Juan Bautista.

The family asks that any donations be made to the Visiting Nurses Association c/o Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home, 363 7th St. Hollister, CA 95023.
