Louis P. Masoni

Louis P. Masoni died as result of a vehicle accident on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, in Gilroy. He was 80 years old.

Mr. Masoni was born and raised in Gilroy. He graduated from Gilroy High School and was an Army Air Corp veteran of World War II. After the service he moved back to Gilroy and married his wife, Virginia. They met when they were 14 years old and were married for 57 years.

He farmed with his parents and brothers. They grew prunes, walnuts, grapes and row crops in the Gilroy area until he retired in 1991. He was a member of Sunsweet Growers, Farm Bureau of Santa Clara County and St. Mary’s Church. He enjoyed both freshwater and deep sea fishing. He also collected antiques, specializing in cigarette lighters.

Louis is survived by his wife, Virginia Masoni of Gilroy; mother Clorinda Masoni; children Frank Masoni and his wife Rosemary of Hollister, Louis Masoni Jr. of Gilroy, and Mark Masoni and his wife Lisa of Morgan Hill; stepgrandchildren Adrian and Vanessa Villegas of Hollister; brother Salvatore Masoni and Richard Masoni, both of Gilroy; sisters-in-law Alice Edwards of Grants Pass, Ore., and Bernice Butler of San Jose; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Salvatore Masoni and his brother Frank Masoni.

Visitation takes place at 1pm on Friday, Nov. 12, at Habing Family Funeral Home. Vigil Service follows at 7pm. Funeral Services take place at 11am Saturday, Nov. 13, at the funeral home. Mass follows at 11:30am at St. Mary’s Church, followed by burial.

The family asks that any donations be made to the Lord’s Table in Gilroy.

Jim Landergen

Jim Landergen of San Martin died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, of natural causes at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. He was 84.

Jim was born on Feb. 25, 1920, in Ferndale. He grew up in Northern California where he started working for the Southern Pacific Railroad and later Pacific Motor Trucking. He met Gracie, his wife of 57 years, and they moved to Marysville and later to San Jose. The last 41 years of his life were spent at their home in San Martin.

Jim raised quarter horses and loved to travel in his motor home to horse shows and later rodeos with his grandchildren. He was in the U.S. Army in World War II.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Jim is survived by his daughter Judy Martin of Soledad; son-in-law Chuck Martin of Soledad; and grandchildren Melanie Martin of Gonzales and Charlie Martin of Soledad.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gracie, who died in June.

Services were Friday, Nov. 12, at  Johnson Funeral Home. Committal Service takes place at 10am today, Nov. 13, at Ocean View Cemetery in Eureka.

Wanda Brogdon

Wanda Brogdon (Starks-Maelzer), 48, of Morgan Hill, died Nov. 11, 2004.

While living in Wichita, Kansas, she worked for the Kansas School For The Deaf as a para-professional and as an American Sign Language teacher.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel; son Brock Maelzer of Haysville, Kansas; daughter Twila Latini of  Washington, D.C.; mother Pauline Starks of Wichita; brothers Jerry Starks of Topeka, Kansas, Ronald Starks of Wichita, Kansas; and five grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society, 435 S. Broadway, Suite 100, Wichita, KS, 67202. Tributes may be sent to the family via www.watsonfuneral.com

A memorial service has been scheduled for 10am Monday at the Church of the Magdalen in Wichita.

Services are under the direction of Watson's Garden Chape in Wichita.

Jose Luis Parra

Jose Luis Parra died in Morgan Hill on Oct. 15, 2004. He was 49.

Jose was born in Juarez, Mexico. He lived in Hollister for the last 40 years and attended The Church of God, drove trucks for Tri-Valley Growers and loved to listen to music.

He is survived by his children Cecilia, Lisa, Sarah and Wally Guerrero of San Martin; brothers and sisters Yolanda Cordero of Las Cruces, N.M., Gilbert Parra of Hollister, Ed Parra of Hollister and Armida Parra of Hollister.

Prayer Services take place at 7pm Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home in Hollister. Funeral services begin at 10am on Thursday, Oct. 21, at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Friends can pay their respects on Wednesday, noon-9pm, at the funeral home chapel.

Merlin Thomas Orth

Merlin Thomas Orth died Oct. 10, 2004, at age 93. She was born in Minnesota and had lived in Morgan Hill for 30 years at Hacienda Valley Mobile Estates.

She is survived by her son Kim Thomas; and daughter Lynn Utz; daughter-in-law Ruth Thomas; son-in-law Don Utz; grandchildren Tiffany, Liane and Shelly; and great-grandchildren Krystal, A.J., Storm, Christopher, Elizabeth and Deja.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 19 years, J. A Thomas.

At the family’s request, there will be no service just private prayers. The family asks that any donations be made to The Battered Women's Shelter or Salvation Army.

Marcella T. Pianalto

Marcella T. Pianalto died Oct. 14, 2004, in Gilroy at the age of 96.

Born Sept. 2, 1908, in Tonitown, Ark., she moved to Gilroy with her husband in 1937. Nana Cel was a devout member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and retired from Filice and Pirelli Cannery after 40 years.

Marcella is survived by her loving daughter Maxine Filice of Gilroy; son Bernard D. Pianalto and his wife Yvonne of Virginia; grandchildren Denise Kline and her husband Rick of Illinois, Marlene Velasco and her husband John of Gilroy, Vickie Oliveri and her husband Sal Jr. of Morgan Hill, David Pianalto of Virginia and Stephen Pianalto of Virginia; great-grandchildren Stephen Kline and Ricky Kline of Illinois, Lisa Ramsey, Marissa Velasco, Chris Velasco and Thomas Velasco of Gilroy, Gina Oliveri of Morgan Hill, Kelly Richards of Utah, and Kristina Oliveri of Hollister; her brother Gene Taldo and his wife Shirley of Sonoma; sister-in-law Etta Taldo of MA; sister-in-law Clara Pianalto and family of Gilroy; numerous other nieces and nephews including her special great nephew Michael Pappani of Gilroy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Pianalto; son-in-law Thomas Filice; great-grandson Salvatore Oliveri III3; and numerous brothers and sisters.

Vigil will be at 5pm Sunday, Oct.17, at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

Services will begin Monday at the funeral home at 9:30am followed by Funeral mass at 10am at St. Mary's Church. Entombment will at St. Mary's Cemetery.

The family asks that any donations be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or Hope Rehabilitation Services in Gilroy.
