Nick M. Mariani

Nick M. Mariani died of prostate cancer in Reedsport, Oregon, on Nov. 13, 2004.

Nick was born on Feb. 22, 1929, in Komiza, Dalmatia, in what is now the Republic of Croatia, and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1935 at the age of 6. A former Cupertino and Morgan Hill resident, he was at various times a farmer, teacher, counselor and restauranteur.

He attended local high schools (Live Oak and Fremont) where he excelled in sports, particularly basketball, and graduated from Fremont High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Ord during the Korean conflict. In 1957 he received a degree in Business Administration from San Jose State University. From 1957-65 he operated Mariani Orchards, a family-owned business in Morgan Hill, where he grew apricots, cherries and prunes. In the 1960s, he also worked as a teacher/counselor at the James Boys Ranch and later as a teacher at Quimby Oak School in San Jose.

Nick owned and operated The Villa Restaurant. He retired in 1993 and moved to Gold Bar, Wash., where he continued to be involved in real estate and land development. He was a member of the Croation Fraternal Union of America and teachers’ and farmers’ professional organizations.

His sense of humor and fun-loving spirit will be dearly missed by family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie Shupe, whom he married in 1958; daughters Simi (and Greg) Hoover of Reedsport, Tori (and Chuck) Combs of Redding and Heidi (and Jeff) Barberio of Pittsburg; grandchildren Lea, A.J., Robyn, P.J., Brandyn, Rejena and Nicholas; sister Victoria (and Sam); brother Mitch (and Dede) Mariani and Andy, all of Morgan Hill; cousins Sonja (Mariani) Porter of Carmichael, Nick J. Mariani of San Pedro and Arlene (Mariani) Kielbasa of Palos Verdes Estates; along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In 1967 he married Louise Williams and leaves behind her and their son, Nick Mariani Jr., of Morgan Hill.

Memorial Mass takes place at 2:30pm today, Nov. 20, at St. Catherine’s Church.

The family asks that any donations be made to Lower Umpqua Hospice, 600 Ranch Road, Reedsport, Oregon, 97467.

Lance Cpl. Jeramy Ailes

Funeral services for U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jeramy Ailes, the 22-year-old Gilroy resident who died while fighting in Iraq last week, have been scheduled for the weekend.

Visitation will take place from 1-9pm Saturday, Nov. 27, at Habing Family Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 3pm Sunday, Nov. 28, at Gilroy Presbyterian Church, 6000 Miller Ave.

Members of the Gilroy Police Department will escort the body of the soldier from the church to his final resting place at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, 1000 W. First St.

Ailes will be buried with full military honors. Eighteen Marines from the San Jose Marine Corps office will be involved in the funeral, including a bugler, pallbearers, riflemen, a swordsman and Marines who will fold and present the American flag to the family.

During this holiday season, Ailes’ parents are encouraging residents to support local charities in their son’s name. Donations of turkeys, canned food, or grocery-store gift certificates can be sent to:

Denny Dorrell

Denny Dorrell, 59, died Nov. 30, 2004, after a lengthy illness.

A California native, he was raised in Grass Valley. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He moved to San Jose in 1967 then to Gilroy in 1987. He owned and operated Dorrell Precision Machining in Gilroy for the past 20 years, was the past president and a charter member of the South Valley Street Rods and was very active in downtown and South Valley car shows.

Dorrell was the husband of Jeannette Dorrell of Gilroy; father of Darren Dorrell of Gilroy and Kelly Luchs, and her husband Mark of San Jose; grandfather of Daniel Dorrell of  Washington, Melissa Luchs of San Jose and Jeremy Luchs of San Jose; and brother of Shirley Nakken and her husband, Johnny, of Bishop.

He was preceded in death by brothers Donald Dorrell and Eddie Hooper.

The family asks that any donations be made to the Crippled Children’s Society of Santa Clara County.

Graveside services were today, Dec. 7, at Sierra Lawn Memorial, 459 Hollow Way, Nevada City. Local arrangements were by Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

Charles Suiter Schramm

Charles Suiter Schramm, 91, died Dec. 6, 2004, at his home in Gilroy.

Charles was an industrial engineer for the Navy and built ships at San Francisco’s Hunter’s Point. After its closure he and his wife have lived on a ranch outside Gilroy.

He was the beloved husband of Bennetta Schramm.

He was preceded in death by their son David.

Private services have been held. Arrangements were un-der the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

Virginia Weimers Halla

Virginia Weimers Halla died Nov. 27, 2004, in Au-stin,  Texas, where she had been visiting her daughter. She was 82.

Virginia was born in Napa on July 31, 1922. She is the daughter of Stella and Leigh Weimers. She was a graduate of Napa High School and San Jose State College.

She was a member of the Black Masque Honor Society, and served in World War II as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Hawaii.

Virginia was a resident of San Jose for more than 50 years and then moved to Morgan Hill in 2000. She is retired from employment from the Alum Rock Union School District.

She was an avid lover of music, dance, theater, travel and the environment. She was a volunteer in the effort to expand walking trails in Morgan Hill and to coordinate safety signage warning motorists of school crossings.

She performed for many years with the California State Troupers and the Mad Hatters, was a member of St. James Senior Center, Cypress Senior Center, Kirk Senior Center, Willows Senior Center, the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, AmVets, WIT, and RSVP.

She was the loving mother of Shari Skalland of Montgomery Creek; Thomas Halla Jr. of Concord; Trish Von-Halla Peyton of Marble Falls,  Texas; and Patrick Hall of Morgan Hill; sister of Leigh A. Weimers of Redwood Estates; grandmother of Tim Skalland, Jeff Skalland, Amy Lang, April Murray, Ryan Halla, Chris Halla, and Laura Halla; great-grandmother of Katie and Brent Lang; mother-in-law of Tim Skalland, Danielle Halla and Stan Peyton; and sister-in-law of Patty Nelson and Geri Weimers.

Preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Thomas Halla Sr.

Graveside services take place at noon on Sunday, Dec. 19, at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno.

Her many friends are invited to share a celebration of her life at 11am Monday, Dec. 20 at the Community and Cultural Center.

The family asks that any donations be made to a memorial bench in her honor.
