Betty Jane Sachara

Betty Jane Sachara, 80, died Dec. 14, 2004.

Betty was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 29, 1924. She moved to Rialto in 1957 with her husband and three children as the result of her husband’s involvement in the rocket industry.

She graduated from Notre Dame College in Ohio. She taught high school journalism, English and Spanish. Her passion for writing was recognized with numerous awards for her poetry that included religious, family and nature themes.

Her poems were published in several anthologies of poetry. The highlight of Betty’s lifetime of writing was “Pope of Peace,” a collection of poetry dedicated to Pope John Paul II. A leather-bound calliographed copy was presented to the Pope on his visit to Monterey in 1987.

Betty was a guest columnist for the Gilroy Dispatch newspaper and frequently submitted letters to the editor expressing her views on public policy. Betty studied piano and taught informally.

She played the piano for pleasure, including her favorites Chopin and Beethoven. She was a resident of Gilroy for the past 30 years. She was a devoted and beloved wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Eugene Francis Sachara; sons Lance Sachara of Gilroy and Mark Sachara of Flagstaff, Ariz.; daughter Lynette Hill of Hesperia; grandchildren Stephanie Maguire of Hesperia, Michelle Carlson of Apple Valley, Lance Sachara Jr. of San Jose and Jessica Sachara of Yakima, Wash.; and great-grandchildren Ben, Ethan and Cora of Hesperia.

Mass of Christian Burial took place at Holy Family Catholic Church in Hesperia. Interment was at Desert View Memorial Park in Victorville.

Patricia Manley Bezek

Patricia Manley Bezek was born in New Brunswick, N.J., on May 13, 1940.

She retired while living in San Martin. Patricia died peacefully in her sleep of natural causes on Feb. 4, 2003, after realizing her dream of moving to Las Vegas, Nev.

Patricia was the beloved mother and friend of Patricia Leigh Bezek Crain. She is survived her son in law, Mathew W. Craine, and her dog Angus all of Sacramento. She is also survived by her brothers and sister, Robert Manley of Nevada, James Manley and William Manley of Colorado, Mary Valone of New Jersey, and Patrick Manley of California.

A memorial service was Monday, Feb. 10, at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

The family asks that any donations be made to a favorite charity.

Favian Esia Diaz

Favian Esia Diaz, 7, died Feb. 6, 2003.

Polite, gifted and always full of love, you could find his smiling face in any crowd - watching, learning, giggling, playing, sharing - an extraordinary boy with an obedient heart, sharing his warmth with the downcast and praying for those who lacked the faith he himself had, family members said.

His memory will live on with his parents, Richard and Teresa Diaz; his younger sister Marina Diaz; grandparents Richard Diaz, Paul and Irma Alonzo, Joe Jimenez, Maria Ignacia Perez; great-grandparents Arturo Bermea, Joe and Mary Diaz, Canuto and Teresa Perez; uncle and aunt Ryan and Starr Mull, uncle Anthony; great-uncle and great-aunt Lupe and Roberta Perez; great-uncle Joey Perez; many more uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were this afternoon, Feb. 12, at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave., Gilroy under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

The famly asks that any donations be made to a trust fund at  Washington Mutual Bank, account #4891553426.

Eugene David Kampa

Eugene David Kampa, 82, died at his home in San Jose on Dec. 19, 2004.

Gene was born in Claremont, Minn., and attended Claremont High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1942 and was honorably discharged in October 1945. He graduated from University of Minnesota in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree and teaching credential in Industrial Arts.

Gene moved to El Centro in 1951. He taught woodworking for 35 years with his first teaching job in El Centro. He also taught in El Cerrito, Danville, Gilroy and lastly in Palo Alto, before retiring from Sequoia Unified School District in 1985. He was a member of the California Teachers Association during his many years of teaching.

Gene loved fishing, camping, traveling back home to Minnesota, photography, and after retirement, computers. One of his favorite hobbies was woodworking and he named his business, “Grandpa Kampa’s Woodshop”. He designed and built wood items for adults and children. He was proud of the achievements of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was happiest at family gatherings.

Gene is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Frances and Jack  Johnson of Sonora; daughter and son-in-law Margaret and Joseph Fortino of Gilroy; son and daughter-in-law Robert and Lori Kampa of Aptos; daughter and son- in-law Carol and Reha Butros of Mersin, Turkey; and son and daughter-in-law Peter and Laura Kampa of McCloud. Eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive him.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1pm Sunday, Jan. 16 at the Villages auditorium, 5000 Cribari Lane., San Jose. A private family interment at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery will be held later.

Contributions are preferred to the American Cancer Society (800)227-2345. Arrangements were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

Frank Peter Basile Jr.

Frank Peter Basile Jr., 55, of Gilroy, died Dec. 15, 2004.

Frank worked at Monterey Mushrooms for more than 20 years.

He is survived by his wife Mary “Libba” Basile, and their children Anthony and Angela.

Services to be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

Gilbert Zuniga Jr

Gilbert Zuniga Jr., 61, died Dec. 19, 2004, at his home after a sudden illness.

Gilbert was born and raised in Gilroy. He attended Gilroy schools and worked as a maintenance man for the City of Gilroy and Rebekah’s Children’s Home, Gilroy. He enjoyed fishing and being with his family.

He was the husband of Elva G. Zuniga of Gilroy; son of Guadalupe Zuniga of Gilroy and Gilbert Zuniga Sr., father of Steve Zuniga and his wife, Tommie of Hollister, Gilbert Zuniga III and his wife, Jodi of Hollister, Sonya De La Cruz and her husband Lino of Gilroy, Armando Zuniga of San Jose and Sylvia Zuniga of Gilroy, and Delia Zuniga; grandfather of Camille and Janay Zuniga of Gilroy, Mario Zuniga of Modesto, Victoria Gaucin of Gilroy, Gilbert IV, Delene and Vincent Zuniga, all of Hollister, Adrian and Adrianna Barrientos of Gilroy, and Christopher and Nicholas De La Cruz of Gilroy; great-grandfather of Nathaniel Garza, Anthony Gutierrez and Isabella Barro, all of Gilroy. He also is survived by many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father Gilbert Zuniga Sr.; daughter Delia Zuniga; brothers Alfonso, Robert, Marshall and Michael Zuniga; and sister Carol Zuniga.

Funeral services were Dec. 24, at Habing Family Funeral Home followed by burial at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park.

Manuel R. Reyes

Manuel Richard Reyes died Dec. 18, 2004, at his home in Santa Rosa, surrounded by his family and friends. Manny enjoyed wood carving, mentoring, practicing spirituality and most of all spending time with friends and family. He was was involved for 36 years in the 12-step community.

He is survived by his beloved wife Janine; 7-year-old daughter Grace; son Robert Harris and his wife Juliette; stepson Jason Thomas; grandchildren Jackie Cooper, Robyn and Carly Harris; brothers Robert Reyes of  Washington and George Reyes of Kentucky; aunts Frances P. Lugo of Gilroy, Ida Velasquez of Bend, Oregon, and Margaret Gutierrez of Hollister; uncles Manuel Padilla of Aptos, Lee Padilla of Madera and Joe Serrato of Madera.

He was preceded in death by his parents Richard Reyes Sr. and Connie Reyes; sister Esther Morris; and brother Richard Clifford Reyes.

Services have been held.

Arrangements were by Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
