Don DeLeo

Don DeLeo, 66, of Gilroy, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, after a lengthy illness.

He retired after 40 years of service with IBM and two years with Hitachi. Don was an avid outdoorsman and a member of the Mountain Charlie Chapter 1850 E. Clampus Vitus and the San Martin 4-H club.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Joann; daughters Jennifer DeLeo, Kathryn Green and Elizabeth DeLeo; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother Denny DeLeo; and sisters Carol Levasseur and Sandra DeLeo.

He was preceded in death by his parents Grace and Sam DeLeo and brothers Charles Hedbloom and Duane DeLeo.

Funeral Mass was Jan. 10 at St. Mary Church. Burial followed at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Sue Alves

Sue Alves died Jan 3, 2005, after a long, courageous battle with breast cancer.

Sue was an emergency room nurse at Kaiser Santa Teresa for 28 years, and most recently had worked for Kaiser in Outside Services. A caregiver as a professional and especially as a person, Sue was often called an angel by those she touched. Her faith always gave her strength and nothing could limit her spirit for life. She loved traveling with her husband, family and friends, and she loved all things related to her family. Her favorite places were Hawaii, Carmel and Lake Tahoe. She was a longtime resident of Gilroy and San Jose after marrying Rick at Santa Clara Mission in 1971.

She is survived by her loving husband Rick Alves of Gilroy; wonderful sons Chad Alves and Ryan Alves, also of Gilroy; her beloved brother Stephen Frazzini and his wife Sheila Huddleston of West Hartford, Conn.; special nieces Sarah Frazzini of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Alison Frazzini, a student at Yale University; loving father-in-law and mother-in-law Dick and Kay Alves of San Jose; brother-in-law Ron Alves and his wife Sandy; and nephew Josh of Rohnert Park.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the American Cancer Society in Sue’s name. Her final resting place will be Los Gatos Memorial Park with her beloved mother and father, Anna And Bert Frazzini.

Services were under the direction of Lima-Erickson Funeral Home.

Carmen Gonzales Haro

Carmen Gonzales Haro died Jan. 7, 2005, after battling cancer for six months. She was 73 years old.

Mrs. Haro was raised in Gilroy. She was married for 51 years to her late husband. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church. She worked at Gentry’s and Gilroy Foods for 40 years. She enjoyed cooking for family gatherings and going shopping. She loved to listen to Mexican music. Being with her family was very important to her.

She was the loving mother of Henry Haro Jr. and his wife Ruth of Gilroy, Leo Haro and his wife Dianne of Hollister, Robert Haro and his wife Debora of Gilroy, Bonifacio Haro and his wife Alice of Hollister, and Mary Ellen Lujan and her husband Thomas of Gilroy; grandmother of Jason, Patricia, Bernadette, Lesley, Rachael, Camille, Bobby Jr., Michael, Tommy, Anna, Gilbert, Stephen, Yvonne, Alexis and Jennal great-grandmother of Alex, Kayla, Lorissa, Lenai, Clayton, Isabel, Julisa, Alyssa, Michael Jr. and Jacob; and dear sister of Saul Gonzales of Mexico, Josephine Sanchez of Gilroy, Joe Gonzales of Gilroy, Manuel Gonzales of Gilroy, Louie Gonzales of Gilroy, Margaret Cardenas of Gilroy and Mary Alfaro of Gilroy. She also is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Haro Sr.

Funeral Mass was Jan. 12 at St. Mary’s Church followed by burial follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and son Billy Jr.

Funeral services take place at 10:30am Monday, Jan. 17, at Gilroy Presbyterian Church. He will be taken to Ukiah for a funeral service at 2pm on Jan. 19, at Eversole Mortuary. Burial follows at Russian River Cemetery.

Local arrangements were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

The family asks that any donations be made to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd or a favorite charity.

Delphina M. Filice

Delphina M. Filice, born in Gilroy on April 19, 1915, died on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, in Santa Rosa.

Delphina was a member of St. Mary’s Mother’s Club, Catholic Ladies Aide Society, St. Mary’s Church, Children’s Home Society, Storybook Chapter, Gilroy Assistance League and Wheeler Hospital Auxiliary. She was a graduate of the University of California Berkeley.

She was the mother of Dr. George Filice and his wife Donna of Green Valley, Dr. Ralph Filice and his wife Nancy of Walnut Creek, Ernest E. Filice Jr. and his wife Patty of Gilroy and Mary Jane Filice Gunter and her husband Doug of Windsor; grandmother of Brian Filice, Christine Filice Parikh, Nicole Filice Capshaw, David Filice, Daniel Filice, Doreen Filice and Montina Filice; great-grandmother of Jessica and Amanda Parikh; sister of Gennaro A. Filice Jr., George Filice and Michael Filice. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews in Gilroy and the East Bay.

She was the daughter of Gennaro A. Filice, founder of the Filice and Perrelli Canning Co. of Gilroy, and Angelina Perrelli Filice, and stepmother Clara Bozzo Filice.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest E. Filice Sr., brother Michael Filice and father Gennaro A. Filice.

Vigil takes place at 7pm Monday, Jan. 17, at Habing Family Funeral Home. Services take place at 10:30am on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the funeral home followed by Funeral Mass at 11am at St. Mary’s Church. Entombment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The family asks that any donations be made to the Gilroy Foundation.

Patricia Cabagua Cabatu

Patricia Cabagua Cabatu, 80, died Jan. 9, 2005, in Gilroy.

She is survived by her daughter Marilyn and her husband Wilfredo Asanon of Gilroy; grandsons Rodel Cabatu of the Philippines and Mark Asanon of Gilroy; sister Francisca Farinas of the Philippines; and cousin Myrna Cabana Garces of Stockton.

Vigil takes place at 5pm Sunday, Jan. 16, at Habing Family Funeral Home. Services take place at 9:30am on Monday, Jan. 17, at the funeral home followed by 10am Mass at St. Mary’s Church. Burial will be at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park.

Jerry A. Boffilo

Jerry A. Boffilo of Morgan Hill died Thursday, Jan. 13. He was 96 years old.

Visitation takes place from 5-8pm Tuesday, Jan. 18, at  Johnson Funeral Home with a Vigil Service at 6pm. Funeral Service takes place at 11am Wednesday, Jan. 19, at St. Catherine’s Church. Burial follows at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Richard S. Harrison

Richard S. “Dick” Harrison died Jan. 24, 2005, in Davis.

Dick was born Nov. 25, 1929, in San Francisco, He graduated from U.C. Berkeley’s Boalt Hall Law School. He served in the U.S. Army and practiced law in San Jose where he met and married Joan. He began his practice of law in Gilroy in 1965. Together with his wife, Dick created the Harrison & Harrison practice, a fixture in Gilroy for more than 35 years.

He was involved in many community affairs including the boards of Gilroy School District building corporation, the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls. Dick was a member of the Gilroy Planning Commission, volunteered for the Salvation Army, and taught community education courses at Gavilan College. He had lifelong interests in botany and gardening, meteorology, astronomy, geography, the history of Gilroy and his native San Francisco.

Dick and Joan recently moved to the University Retirement Community in Davis. He was a good, decent and respected man.

He was the son of Vera and John J. Harrison; husband of Joan A. Harrison; father of Lois and David Harrison; and grandfather of Simon and Bennett.

He was preceded in death by his mother Vera Harrison.

Memorial service takes place at 2pm Saturday, Feb. 5, at Gilroy Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

The family asks that any donations be made to Gilroy Friends of the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna St., or a favorite charity.
