Joseph J. Galvan

Joseph J. Galvan died March 14, 2005, in Gilroy at the age of 82.

Joe was a veteran of World War II and after his discharge he and his brother Manuel owned and operated Galvan’s TV.

He was very active in Morgan Hill politics, a member of The Morgan Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Rotary and Grange. Galvan Park on Crest Avenue is named after Joseph and Manual.

He is survived by his loving daughter Mary Jo Samuelson and her husband Brian of Crowley Lake; sisters Mary Hazelrigg of Gilroy and Alice Bariola of Napa; and many nieces and nephews.

Viewing takes place at 10am on Tuesday, March 22, at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy.

The Funeral Mass follows at 11am at St. Mary Catholic Church.

Burial will be St. Mary Cemetery.

The family asks that any donations be made to the American Heart Association, St. Joseph’s Center in Gilroy or to a favorite charity.

Stanley R. Butkivich

Stanley R. Butkivich died Wednesday, March 16, 2005 in San Jose. He was 52.

Butkivich was born and raised in San Pedro and graduated from San Pedro High School and CalPoly, San Luis Obispo, with a degree in engineering.

He proudly worked for FMC Ordinance Division/ United Defense, Santa Clara for 30 years.

He was involved in his daughter’s local interests including, YMCA Indian Princess - where he served as a chief and he was a member of the Los Padres Softball Team in Gilroy.

He owned and operated Dance Unlimited with his wife, Jackie.

He is the loving husband of Jackie Butkivich of Gilroy, devoted father of Erin, Michelle and Rebecca Butkivich, all of Gilroy; son of the late Stanley and Mary Butkivich; dear brother of Marie Oliveri (Jerry) of Rancho Palos Verdes, John Butkivich (Gloria) of Glendale, Ariz., and Anne McGinn of Troy, Mich.

He also is survived by a cast of thousands who loved him.

Memorial services will be held at 2pm, Monday, March 21, at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

It was his wish to send his daughters to college, so a fund has been established in his name to help cover those expenses: Stan Butkivich Memorial Fund, c/o South Valley National Bank, 500 Tennant Station, Morgan Hill, CA 95037.

James I. Ondriezek

James I. Ondriezek died at his home Monday, March 14, 2005.

A native of Deadwood, S.D., he was 74.

Mr. Ondriezek moved to San Jose in 1946. He graduated from San Jose Technical School, was Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict and worked as a salesman for several bearing companies. He was instrumental in the start-up of Horsford Brothers (now Applied Technologies) in Gilroy.

He is the loving husband of 53 years of Audrey Ondriezek of Morgan Hill; the loving and deeply respected father of daughter Shirley Moore and her husband Kelly Moore of Santa Rosa; daughter, Georgina Fugate and her husband Larry Fugate of Morgan Hill; son Dave Ondriezek and his late wife, Debbie, of Gilroy; adopted son, Robert Culbertson of Santa Clara; grandfather of Jeremy Moore of Santa Rosa, Trevor Moore of Santa Rosa, Ryan Fugate of Morgan Hill, Kimberly Fugate of Morgan Hill, Matthew and Monica Ondriezek, both of Gilroy; the great-grandfather of Nathaniel Fugate of Morgan Hill and Sadie Moore of Santa Rosa; brother of Elizabeth Rose Smith of Auburn and Darwin Ondriezek of San Jose.

He also is survived by four nieces and three nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 10am Tuesday, March 22, at Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose. Services are under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

Winthrop William Dada

Winthrop William Dada died Feb. 21, 2005, at the age of 83.

Win was born in Breckenridge, Minn., on Oct. 1, 1921, to Arch and Florence Dada. He was the fourth of seven children. Win grew up in Oaks, N.D., and graduated from Oaks High School. His college education began at Bottineau, N.D., and Appleton, Wisc.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, training at Brooks Field,  Texas. He was a pilot with the 14th Air Force, the Flying Tigers. He flew in China, Burma and India. His B-25 was shot down in China. He was able to hike out after 14 days and return to his unit. He received the Air Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and a Battle Star for his participation in a major campaign while in China.

After his Army service he continued his education and graduated from U.C. Berkeley in the spring of 1949. The following fall he married Ruth Marie Maves of Bovey, Minn., and they made their home in Richmond, where their three children were born. He worked for the federal Food and Drug Administration and was based in San Francisco for several years. He then began to work for the Dried Fruit Association in Santa Clara. In 1977 while president of the Dried Fruit Association, he was invited to Geneva, Switzerland, to speak to the United Nations General Assembly on world agricultural issues.

He and Ruth settled in Morgan Hill where they raised their children. After retiring as president of the DFA he and Ruth chose to retire in Missoula, Mont., to be near their family. They have lived in Missoula for 27 years with many great summers spent at their cabin on Placid Lake.

Win was an avid fisherman, hunter, a great card player, and had a love for horses. He spent many happy hours at the local Senior Center playing bridge. Win will be remembered for his honesty, integrity and great sense of humor.

He is survived by his sister Evelyn Bowman; wife Ruth; children Will Dada, Liza Dada Malmstrom and Kate Radzyminski; grandchildren Ruth and Daniel Dada, and Bill and Emily Radzyminski; and one great dog.

Burial was March 5 at Missoula City Cemetery.

Services were under the direction of Livingston Malletta Funeral Home.

Maria Ledezma Guerrero

Maria Ledezma Guerrero died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at her home in Gilroy. She was 92.

Born Maria Cristina Ledezma Miranda of Monterrey, Mexico, Mrs. Guerrero enjoyed cooking, especially for her large family and spending time with them.

She is survived by her children, Richard Guerrero of Porterville, Larry Guerrero of Buckeye, Ariz., Santos Gamez of Porterville, Josephine Cantu of Gilroy, Jose Guerrero of Hollister, Eva Alvarez of Corcoran, Simona Arizpe of Watsonville, Rosa Clarin of Freedom, Susan Santos of Hanford and Rachel Sotelo of Lodi; 45 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Loreto and son Pablo.

Services begin at 11am today, March 19, at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy.

It will be followed by Funeral Mass at noon at St. Mary’s Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Gilroy.
