Byron ‘Pops’ Terry
Byron “Pops” Terry died April 1, 2005, in Mesa, Ariz., from lung cancer at age 52. He was a resident of Morgan Hill for 15 years.
He is survived by his brother, Mike Terry; children Toni-Marie Preder of Arizona, MaryJane Johnson of Missouri and Rosemary Terry and Dalton Terry of Morgan Hill; and grandchildren Joanna, Heat-her and Chantel Johnson of Missouri.
Services are pending.
Patricia Ann Cristobal
Patricia Ann Cristobal died Thursday, April 7, 2005, in Gilroy.
Mrs. Cristobal will be remembered by most as a checker at Nob Hill Foods, where she worked since 1968. She will be missed by all.
She is survived by her husband, Larry; children Jason Cristobal and his wife Carrie of San Jose and Tommy Cristobal of Gilroy; siblings Gerald Gong of San Jose, Connee Hawkins of Fresno, Rudy Gong of Morgan Hill, Ken Gong of Fresno, Colleen Hernandez of Oak Park, Ron Gong of Fresno and Marilyn Wilson of Morgan Hill; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 3-9pm at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
Funeral services take place Monday at 10am at the funeral home.
Rachel (Mirelez) Lozano
Rachel (Mirelez) Lozano, a native of Gilroy, was born Jan. 17, 1958, and died April 7, 2005.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel R. Lozano; children Daniel R. Lozano III and his wife Michelle, and Mon-ique R. Lozano; granddaughter Hailey D. Lozano; parents Ray Mirelez and his wife Louisa and Mary Garcia DeLeon and her husband Al; sisters Annie Tomasello and her husband Sal, Gloria Gutierrez and her husband Frank, and Belinda Navarro; brothers Fernando “Fernie” Mirelez and Noe Escamilla; in-laws Daniel Lozano, Isabel Lozano, Victor Lozano, Ruth T. Lozano Balderaes, Martha and Marty Garrison, Connie and Tony Salinas, Mary and Jim Rodriguez; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother Joey Mirelez.
Visitation takes place from 5-8pm Monday, April 11, at Habing Family Funeral Home. Her siblings will be present from 6-8pm. Services take place at 10am on Tuesday, April 12, at the funeral home. Burial follows at St. Mary Cemetery.
Enedina Barreras Chavez
Enedina Barreras Chavez died Monday, April 4, 2005.
Mrs. Chavez was born to David and Soledad Barreras on April 23, 1923, in Artesia, N.M., later coming to California with her parents in 1943.
On Nov. 24, 1941, she married Jake Chavez and devotedly shared her life with him for 53 years. She was a longtime resident of Morgan Hill, and most recently a resident of Reno, Nev. She received the Holy Ghost and was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ in 1997. She was a member of the Potter’s in Reno.
She was devoted to and cared for her children Theresa Rodgers, Donald Chavez, Steven Chavez and Ruben Chavez. She was the loving grandmother to Joseph, Jacob Rodgers, Jason Chavez and Steve Jr., Francisca and Daniel Chavez; and loving great-grandmother to Coral, Hunter, Marissa and Adrian.
Services begin at 10am today, April 9, at Johnson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Memorial Park.
John Kado
John Kado, a longtime Gilroy resident, died at home in Elk Grove on Sunday, April 3, 2005, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on March 2, 1923, in San Juan Bautista and moved to Gilroy in 1947. He married Alice Fujimoto on July 3, 1949. He lived and farmed in Gilroy for more than 50 years. After a severe stroke in 1996, both he and his wife moved to Elk Grove in 1998. He was active in the Japanese-American Citizen’s League and in the local Buddhist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alice Kado; children Leonard (Linda), Randolph (Laureen), Sherilyn Fry (Ian), Nora Matlen (Joe); 13 grandchildren; sister Elsie Konno (Kay); and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
Viewing takes place from 9am-2pm, today, April 9, at South East Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, Elk Grove. Buddhist funeral services take place at 2pm today.

Carl J. Berta
Carl J. Berta, 91, of Gilroy, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005.
Mr. Berta enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years and traveled throughout the country, actually meeting his wife while both were active in baseball. He also enjoyed bowling and golf.
While raising his family he pursued his interest in the grocery business, opening the Eastside Market until his retirement in 1980.
Since his retirement, he has enjoyed time with his family and friends and playing golf.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lee Berta; their children James C. Berta and his wife Norma of Gilroy, and John F. Berta and his wife Michelle of Prunedale; grandchildren Jim, Nicole, Debbie and Bill; great-grandchildren Jefferson and Joshua; and many nieces and nephews.
Services take place at 10am today, April 9, at Habing Family Funeral Home. Burial follows at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.
Pedro G. Olvera
Pedro G. Olvera, a former Morgan Hill resident, died Feb. 21,2003, in San Jose. He was 82.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie Olvera; children David P. Olvera, Pete Olvera Jr., Ana Maria Lee, Edward Olvera, Cynthia MacNeil-Perez, Jesus Olvera and Victor Olvera; 10 grandchildren; and sisters Petra and Angela.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at Johnson Funeral Home. The Funeral mass will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Catherines Church with intermite to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetary, Morgan Hill. Arragements handled by Johnson Funeral Home.
Susan Lewis
The community and School District has lost a very special person. Live Oak High School counselor Susan Lewis of Morgan Hill died Sunday, Feb. 23, following a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Services are pending at Johnson Funeral Home.
Susan has been an outstanding counselor and special education teacher at Live Oak High School since September 1988. An advocate for students, she always considered their educational and emotional needs. Her commitment and dedication surpassed mere professionalism. She supported her coworkers as a respected educational leader through countless workshops, mentoring and individual support. Her knowledge and love of education lives on in the classrooms of all who have been influenced by her warm spirit, strong educational values and personal integrity. Susan loved children and loved being around them.
As a special education teacher and department chair, she worked hard at developing programs that provided students the skills necessary to be successful in high school. Susan also instituted collaborative programs where special education teachers and regular education teachers jointly taught courses. These collaborative programs helped students transition from the more protective special education environment to the mainstream courses. She was top notch in everything she did.
Susan continued her advocacy for students as a guidance counselor. Three years ago, she joined the Live Oak High School counseling staff where she continued her role of helping students to achieve their potential. Her keen listening skills and compassion helped her understand students’ needs and find ways to address them.
As an integral member of the Live Oak community, Susan assisted everyone who came across her path. She was incapable of saying no to a person in need. Many people came by Susan’s office just to be touched by her warm smile and the little nod she gave showing them that she understood what was needed.
Along with being a counselor and special education teacher, Susan served as the adviser for the Live Oak High School Interact Service Club, which is associated with the Rotary Club. Here she helped students make the connection with the community through service projects and volunteerism. She worked side by side with the Morgan Hill Rotarians in order to expand the horizons of all students who participated in Interact. Susan helped organize guest speakers and projects that helped local citizens as well as people in need throughout the world.
While a member of the Rotary Club she was awarded a Paul Harris fellowship.
Susan was a truly exceptional person whose loving and caring attitude made her a vital part of the Live Oak High School educational community. She will be sorely missed by both staff and students. Susan showed students, parents, educators and the community the true meaning of an angel.
Each Christmas she would receive cards from former and present students recalling experiences.
Born in Wichita, Kansas, Susan grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia in a family that included brothers Robert, Richard and Jim Peavy. She also is survived by sons James, of San Carlos, and Matthew, of Boston.
While a sophomore in high school, she met her future husband, Dan. They married following their graduation from Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Susan earned a master’s degree in learning disabilities from the University of Texas at Austin and later a master’s in counseling.
She served as a local chapter director and president and regional director of Delta Kappa Gamma, a women’s educational honor sorority. She helped develop a literacy program for residents of the emergency housing Boccardo Center in San Martin.
Susan was 59.
Family members expressed thanks for support in the past year from the many teachers, friends and others in the community with special thanks to Susan’s angels, Jacqui Kanode and Cindy Miller.
Susan Lewis
A memorial service for Susan Lewis, a Live Oak High School counselor who died Feb. 23, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 7, at the United Methodist Church, 17175 Monterey Road.
Susan was a special education teacher at Live Oak High School from September 1988 until three years when she became a guidance counselor.
