San Juan Favela Aguilar

San Juan Favela Aguilar died March 8, 2003, in Gilroy.

He is survived by his common-law wife, Olga Hernandez of Gilroy; brother Marcelino Aguilar of New Mexico; sister and spouse Petra and Vladimir Garcia of Salinas; sister Silvestra Urquidi of Salinas; sister and her husband Maria Elena and Manuel Rodriguez of Salinas; sister Felipa Vergara of Bakersfiel; stepchildren and their spouses Jeannette and Lenny Carrillo, Tito and Phyllis Hernandez, David and Carmen Hernandez, Anthony Hernandez and John and Candy Hernandez, all of Gilroy; nephews and nieces, Adam, Paul David and Sandra Rodriguez of Salinas; Erwin and Monica Garcia of Salinas, Arturo and Heather Urquidi of Bakersfield, Marco and John Paul Vergara of Bakersfield, Ruben Urquidi of Massachusetts, Peter Urquidi of London, England, and Paulina Aguilar of McFarland; mother-in-law Manuela Montalvo; and many stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren and in-laws.

His parents, Manuel and Paulina Favela Aguilar of Mexico, preceded him in death.

Mr. Aguilar was a truck driver and most recently worked for TVT in Gilroy and Cabinex in Morgan Hill. He enjoyed fishing, boating, watching soccer games and he especially enjoyed his CB radio. He also loved spending time with family and friends and helping those he could.

Vigil Service will be at 6:30 tonight at Habing Family Funeral Home. Services will begin on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the funeral home and then proceed to St. Mary Church for a Funeral Mass at 9 a.m.

Burial will follow at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.

Patricia Farber

Devoted mother, grandmother and friend. Patricia (Pat) Farber died Sunday, March 2, 2003 after a fight with emphysema.

She is survived by her loving son Rick Galletta, daughter, Laura Galletta Reed, 10 “Farber” step-children, 18 grandchildren, cousin Mary Hiatt and many cherished friends.

Pat was raised in San Francisco, making her an avid 49er and Giants fan. She graduated from Mission High School. In her early twenties she made her home in the Santa Clara Valley and has resided in Morgan Hill since 1980. She enjoyed working in the emergency room at Good Samaritan and O’Connor Hospitals. She retired from Leland High School where she was a positive influence on many young people.

A memorial service celebrating Pat’s life will be held, Saturday, March 15, at 2 p.m. at Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church, 16970 DeWitt Ave. Family and friends are encouraged to share fond memories. Written rememberances are appreciated. Pat’s favorite colors were red and yellow. The family suggests memorial donations to the American Lung Association. Arrangements by  Johnson Funeral Home.

Eva Bevilacqua

Gilroy pioneer Eva Marian Fortado Bevilacqua died peacefully Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the age of 93.

Eva was born on Alexander Street in Gilroy to parents Joseph and Jessie Fortado. As part of a farming family, Eva and her brother Raymond called the whole south Santa Clara Valley their home and lived in San Juan Bautista, Gilroy and San Martin, where she attended San Martin School until the eighth grade.

When Eva married Frank Bevilacqua in 1931, the couple moved to Madrone where they ranched into the 1980s. Eva moved back to Gilroy in the late 1980s. Throughout her life, Eva was first a homemaker and always known for her cooking at community potlucks and dinners. As her children grew older, Eva entered the workplace and was a familiar face at the Farmer’s Union in downtown Morgan Hill, Squeri’s Brothers Hardware. She also worked at Filice & Perilli, and Driscoll Packing in San Martin. Eva was always a part of her children’s lives and participated in Morgan Hill Elementary, Encinal School and Live Oak High School parent clubs.

Later in her life as she had the time, Eva became a charter member of the El Toro Republican Women’s Club. A highlight of that part of her life included meeting and campaigning with then-Governor Ronald Reagan and President Gerald Ford. She was also a charter member of the Morgan Hill Women’s Chamber of Commerce. She served on every committee imaginable in the Morgan Hill Grange and was most recently an enthusiastic participant in WITs.

Eva leaves a daughter, Frances Kohler of Albion, California, wife of the late Richard E. Kohler, and son Donald Bevilacqua and his wife Christine of Gilroy, as well as grandchildren Valerie Kohler Patton, Kevin Kohler, Kathryne and Lauren Bevilacqua and five great-grandchildren.

Services have been held. The family suggests memorial donations to the Scleroderma Research Foundation, 2320 Bath St., Suite 315, Santa Barbara, CA 93105 or any charity of your choice. Arrangements by Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

Virginia Wittman

Virginia “Genny” (Gates) Wittman died March 17, 2003, in Morgan Hill.

She was born April 12, 1954, in Yokohama, Japan. Genny was an avid fan of collies and was a very reputable local breeder and enjoyed very much showing them. She was also very involved with Collie Rescue. Genny will always be remembered by her caring and nurturing nature to all she met.

She is the beloved wife of Kim Wittman of Morgan Hill; devoted and loving mother of Kent Wittman and Jessica Wittman, both of Morgan Hill; daughter of Michiko Gates of Madera; sister of Jim Gates of Visalia, Angie McGill of Chico and Stephane McShane of Madera.

Her father was the late Charles Gates.

Friends are invited to attend visitation beginning at 11 a.m. and services at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at  Johnson Funeral Home.

Anyone wishing to make a gift in honor of Virginia Wittman, the family requests that donations be made in Genny’s name to the American Caner Society.

Rita M. Owen

Rita M. Owen died March 14, 2003.

A native of New York, she was 61. Mrs. Owen was a longtime Gilroy resident and employee of the Santa Clara County Health Department for 30 years. She was a member of St. Mary's Church and was loved by many. She will be missed by all whose lives she has touched. She was a loving mother and devoted friend to many.

She is survived by children Maureen Fredrickson of Morgan Hill, Denise Owen and Patricia Owen, both of Gilroy; grandchildren Matthew Langley of Morgan Hill, Tyler Rochester of Napa, Shayla Holbrook and J.C. Castaneda, both of Gilroy; siblings Eileen Camillone of Connecticut, Joan Brennan of New York and the late Eugene Hurley and Connie Hurley; and many nieces and nephews. She was the loving friend of John Devencenzi of San Jose.

A Memorial Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, at St. Mary Church in Gilroy under direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

The family asks that any donations be made to St. Mary's Church, Gilroy.

Margaret Castle

Margaret Castle Wilson died March 14, 2003, surrounded by family.

Born Margaret Mary Castle on Oct. 15, 1912, she enjoyed life to the age of 90. A life-long resident of Santa Clara County, she was raised in Mountain View, later moving to Gilroy.

She was employed as office manager for NASA for 20 years. Margaret was a member of Children’s Home Society and various bridge groups. A voracious reader, she enjoyed bird watching and gardening. She and her husband had a passion for travel, visiting numerous countries around the world including two trips to China.

She leaves a sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Nelson and her husband Warren of Mountain View and a brother, Tom Castle and his wife Jean of Morgan Hill. She will be missed by nine nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews upon whom she doted.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Bernarr L. Wilson, and a brother, Jim Castle.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at  Johnson Funeral Home.

The family asks that any donations be made to Odyssey Hospice, 1500 Hamilton Avenue, Campbell, CA 95008.

Werner Vogel

Werner Vogel, age 74, died March 13, 2003, at his home after a short battle with lung cancer.

Mr. Vogel was born Feb. 9, 1929, in El Centro.

He is survived by his daughter Danna Vogel of Gilroy; siblings William Vogel, Joseph Vogel, Albert Vogel, Edward Vogel and Julia Gimenez, all of Gilroy, Ida Knowels and Elizabeth Cheadle; both of Tehama; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Vogel owned and operated a sheet metal heating and air conditioning shop in Gilroy for more than 40 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War.

A Gathering in his Honor will be at noon Saturday, March 22, at the Veterans Building, at Sixth and Eigleberry streets, in Gilroy.The family wishes to extend an invitation to all of his friends.

Cremation services were under direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

The family asks that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
