Carmen B. Carlson

Carmen B. Carlson, 90, of Morgan Hill, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at Pacific Hills Manor.

Born in San Francisco, she had lived in Palo Alto for 31 years before moving to Morgan Hill in 1981. She was a retired hairstylist and enjoyed traveling.

Mrs. Carlson was the beloved wife of Erling K. Carlson for 60 years. She also is survived by her sister Dolores Dumos of San Francisco; daughters Diane Sullivan of Bakersfield, Nancy Cornett of Florence, Oregon, and Penny  White of Modesto; five grandchildren in Bakersfield, and Christine and Catherine Renninger from the Bay Area; and eight great-grandchildren.

Vigil Service will be at at 7 p.m. Wednesday at  Johnson Funeral Home. Family and friends may gather at funeral home at 9 a.m. Thursday and accompany the family to St. Catherine Church for Funeral Mass at 10 a.m.

Inurnment will be at Alta Mesa Cemetery in Palo Alto.

Lisa Marie Martz

Lisa Marie Martz, 38, of Morgan Hill, died Sunday, May 18, 2003.

Survivors include her beloved husband Greg, loving parents Barry Fell and Karen Southmayd, stepmother Phil Fell, mother-in-law Grace Rockett, father-in-law Jack Rockett and beloved children Kristen and Tyler, brother Scott Fell and sisters Laurie Aguilar and Jessica Kawakami, stepsister Pam Miller and nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Milpitas High School and San Jose State University with an electrical engineering degree, Lisa enjoyed coaching her daughter’s soccer teams and helping lead her Girl Scout Troop. She loved to travel and made as many trips as she could to her home on the big island of Hawaii. Her greatest love was spending time with her children who she was so proud of. She also became very involved with the Avon 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk and started a group called “The Tent Angels” who helped the set-up and take-down of tents and miscellaneous duties during the walk. She was loved so much by her family and friends and she will be greatly missed by them all.

Her cremains will be scattered at sea off the coast of Hawaii.

Memorial services will be Saturday, May 24, 2003, at 1: p.m. at  Johnson Funeral Home. The family asks that any donations be made to Breast Cancer Research.

Mario J. DeStefani

Mario Joseph DeStefani Sr., born May 2, 1923, in Hollister, died May 16, 2003, in San Martin. He was 80 years old.

Mario lived in Hollister until he married Santa Leonti and moved to San Martin where he lived until his death. He farmed most of his life.

Mario was a Navy veteran of World War II. He belonged to the Sons of Italy. He liked to hunt and fish, and during his retired years he loved to go gambling in Reno.

He is survived by sons Joseph Paul and Mario Jr. and his wife; sisters Judy Schwartz, Victoria Howard and Rita Freitas and husband Gene; grandchildren Geordia Prichard and husband Russell, Jayme DeStefani, Joseph DeStefani; great-grandchild Russell Prichard Jr.; and in-laws Carm and Carrol Rasmussen, Tony and Lillian Leonti, Eleanor Harden, Joe and Grace Leonti and Marilyn Leonti. He also is survived by many nephews and nieces.

Mario was preceded in death by his wife.

Funeral Mass was Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church. Burial was at San Joaquin National Cemetery, Gustine.

The family asks that any donations be made to a favorite charity.

Arrangements were by Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

Manuel Cardoso Silva

Manuel Cardoso Silva of San Jose died May 17, 2003.

Mr. Silva, 92, was born in the Azores Islands. He came to the United States in 1968 and has lived locally for 32 years. In the Azores he was a farmer and blacksmith. He was known and respected throughout the Azores Islands for his ability to hand make tools and farm implements. He came to the United States to give his family a better future. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends in San Jose and attending Portuguese celebrations and family gatherings. All who knew him will dearly miss him.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Manuel Fernando and Manuela Silva of Portugal; son and daughter-in-law Jose Cardoso and Fernanda Silva of Canada; daughter and son-in-law Estela and Joe Bettencourt of Canada; son and daughter-in-law Tony and Natalia Silva of Morgan Hill; daughter and son-in-law Maria Adelaide and Manuel Melo of San Martin; daughter and son-in-law, Fernanda “Fern” and Albert Gomes of Hollister; and son Frank Silva of San Jose.

Mr. Silva is the brother of Francisco Silva of Azores, Portugal, and Maria Do Rosario Silva of Azores. He also is survived by 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Silva was preceded in death by his wife, Isaura Silva.

Funeral Mass was Thursday at at Five Wounds, Portuguese National Church, 1401 Santa Clara St., San Jose, followed by burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, San Jose.

Arrangements were by Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

Arlene L. Baugh

Arlene L. Baugh, 78, died May 14, 2003, in Gilroy.

She was born on July 24, 1924, in Colorado, and was the daughter of Sharon L. McKie. She is survived by her son Donald R. Baugh; grandchildren Christy John and April; and great- grandchildren Katie, Carrie, Kelly, Marissa and Mathew.

She is remembered for her love of cooking, crocheting and traveling.

Services were under the direction of  Johnson Funeral Home.

Pearl Wright Ruhanen

Pearl Wright Ruhanen was born in Richford, Vt., on Feb. 11, 1920. She died May 15, 2003, in Walnut Creek.

Pearl spent her early life in Vermont then moved to  Washington, D.C., during World War II to work for the federal government. She lived in Alexandria, Va., where she met her husband, Arthur. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Redwood City, then to Los Altos, finally settling in Gilroy, where they lived for 43 years.

Pearl worked in real estate for many years, starting as a Realtor and later earning a broker’s license. She owned and operated Ruhanen Realty in Gilroy and was a member of WIT (Women In Touch), the California Association of Realtors and the South County Real Estate Board. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, reading, growing orchids and being involved with her grandchildren.

Pearl was a beautiful, kind, loving and generous mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by Arthur Ruhanen of Gilroy, her husband of 60 years; daughters Sandra Lynn Freeman and her husband Robert Freeman of Garrison, N.Y., Patricia Ann Schrupp and her husband William of Lafayette and Kimberly Sue Bartlett and her husband Dr. Scott Bartlett of Chestnut Hill, Penn; grandchildren Robert and Saurin Freeman, Jeff and Kevin Schrupp and Alexandra and Natalie Bartlett.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Lucius.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family asks that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 1715 S. Bascom Ave. Suite 100, Campbell, CA 95008, or a favorite charity.
