Virginia Locarnini

Virginia Locarnini died May 31, 2003, at her home in Morgan Hill after a lengthy illness.

She was born Aug. 17, 1925, in Gilroy to Sebastian and Rose Beltrando. She was an accomplished bridge player, an active volunteer and a devoted homemaker. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

The family is especially grateful to Delinda Sandoval for her dedicated care and compassion for the past year and a half.

She was the beloved wife of Vic Locarnini for 55 years; mother to Linda Scheidegger of Danville and Steve Locarnini of Morgan Hill; and grandmother of Lisa, Stefanie and Sarah Locarnini of Morgan Hill and Jeff Scheidegger of Danville.

She was preceded in death by her only sister, Eleanor Hinkley.

Visitation will be held at  Johnson Funeral on Wednesday, June 4, starting at 9 a.m. with funeral service to follow at 1 p.m.

Private entombment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Gilroy.

The family requests that flowers or donations be made to Odyssey Health Care, 1500 Hamilton Ave., suite 212, Campbell, CA 95008.

Richard P. Castaneda

Richard P. Castaneda died Saturday at Hazel Hawkins Hospital in Hollister. He was 70.

A native of Superior, Ariz., Mr. Castaneda moved to Monterey at 13 and worked at the Oxnard Sardine Factory on Cannery Row as a teenager. In 1983, Mr. Castaneda and his wife, Hope, moved to Hollister, and in his retirement he worked part-time for DeQuin Auto Body. He was a lifetime member of the Woodmen Fraternal Order and a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hollister.

He married Hope in 1952 and after moving to Monterey, they returned to Arizona until 1960 when they settled in Morgan Hill and raised three children. He worked as an auto body repairman and was a partner in Cal and Cas Body Shop, as well as owning R. Castaneda and Son, a tomato and cotton harvesting company. He then returned to the auto body business, working for Marx Chevrolet and Bob Hogue Auto Body.

Mr. Castaneda is survived by his wife Hope; daughters and sons-in-law Cathy and Joe Silveira of Hollister and Diane and Ron Ownbey of Hollister; son and daughter-in-law Richard D. and Lisa Castaneda of Santa Rosa; grandchildren Jocelynn and Jennifer Silveira, Ron and Sara Ownbey, all of Hollister, and Danielle and Benjamin Castaneda of Santa Rosa; sisters Margaret Arroyo of Sacramento, Rose Spizak of San Mateo, Carol DeMaine of Battle Ground, Wash., Nadine Hendrickson of Tacoma, Wash.; brothers Ralph Reyes of Seaside, Rudy Reyes of Hollister and Ruben Reyes of Sacramento; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hollister. Private family inurnment will follow cremation.

Arrangements and cremation are through Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home and Gavilan Hills Crematory.

The family asks that any donations be made to the American Heart Association or a favorite charity, in care of Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home, 363 Seventh St., Hollister, CA 95023.

Jess V. Arias

Jess V. Arias died June 1, 2003, in Gilroy at the age of 77.

Mr. Arias was a native of Compton. He has been a resident of Gilroy for more than 70 years. He was a clerk at Safeway Foods for 36 years. Mr. Arias was a veteran of World War II, the Gilroy Optimist Club and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife Josephine of Gilroy; daughter Joanne and her husband Anthony Luna of Gilroy; sons Michael Arias and Jesse Arias both of Gilroy; stepchildren Ray Heredia of Gilroy, Jim Heredia of Boulder,  Colo., Lydia and her husband Doug Gillard of Morgan Hill, Charles Heredia of Hollister and Donnie Heredia of Gilroy; grandchildren Devin and Cobe Luna of Gilroy, Roz Sanchez of Morgan Hill, Mark Heredia of San Jose, Stefanie Sanchez of Scottsdale, Ariz., Erica and Sarah Heredia of Boulder, Raelynn and Kiana Heredia of Hollister, Jesse Arias Jr., Wesley Arias and Ricky Arias, all of Gilroy; and great-grandchild Kristopher Heredia of Morgan Hill.

Jess is the brother of Joe and his wife Barbara Arias of Rodeo and Dorothy Arias of Gilroy. He also is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Vigil and Funeral Mass will be Wednesday at 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Gilroy.

Arrangements are under direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

The family asks that any donations be mde to the Diabetes Foundation.

Enrique Castellon

Enrique Castellon died June 1, 2003, in San Jose. He was age 72.

A resident of San Martin, he was an immigrant from Mexico where he was a heavy equipment operator for the Mexican government in its highway department. He worked for a time at the cannery in San Martin.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa Castellon; and children Hector Castellon, Letticia Castellon, Adan Castellon and Enrique Castellon.

Funeral Mass was this afternoon, June 6, at St. Catherine Church.

Arrangements were handled by  Johnson Funeral Home.

Kevin Harp

Kevin Harp of Los Banos died June 1, 2003. He was born Oct. 11, 1964.

He was the husband of Tyra Harp; father of Toni Harp, Raymond Harp and Jackie Harp; son of Annette Campos; stepson of Joe Campos; brother of Sandy O’Neal Medina, Phil Medina, Lori and Steve Woisin and Kelley Harp; uncle to Jake O'Neal, Andria and Austin Medina, Jacinda and Ronnie Barker, Ronnie and Stephanie Jones, Stevie and Kaehla Woisin and Brandon Harp; and great uncle to Trent Barker.

He was loved by his family and friends. Kevin enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Friends and family are invited to funeral services at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy on Saturday at 4 p.m. A reception will be held immediately after the services at the home of Steve and Lori Woisin in Gilroy.

A memorial fund has been set up through  Washington Mutual Bank with donations made payable to Lori Woisin for his family.

Tyra and her family would also like to thank the many family and friends who have been extremely helpful with all their love and support during this difficult time.

Evelyn Josephine Carpenter

Evelyn Josephine Carpenter, 73, died June 2, 2003, at Valley Health Care Center in Billings, Mont. She was born April 3, 1930 in  Whitefish, Mont., to George and Betty Gay (Sanders) Taylor. She graduated from Gallatin County High School in 1948. She had lived in Bozeman, Utah, California and  Texas.

Carpenter worked for 43 years. She began as a switchboard operator for Mountain Bell 1947-1957. From 1957-1959 she was an executive secretary for Thiokol Chemical Corp. of Utah, doing defense contracts. After moving to Morgan Hill she worked for United Technologies and IBM. From 1969-1973 Carpenter owned and operated the French & French Personnel Agency in San Jose. She then worked at Lockheed Industries as a budget analyst, both in California and  Texas, until retirement in 1992.

Carpenter was charming and high spirited. She loved the adventures of life. She appreciated the arts and was involved and interested in our nation’s politics. She also had a talent for interior design and created many beautiful homes.

Carpenter is survived by her daughters Cinda Lu Thurston (John) Nichols of Colleyville,  Texas, and Connie Lee Thurston (Kim) Dewey of Eureka Springs, Ark.; grandchildren Cary Elizabeth Dewey, Laura JoAnne Nichols and Stephen Barrett Nichols; sister Mary Gay  Taylor (Jack) Wells of Bozeman; brother William George  Taylor of Bend, Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services were under the direction of Dahl Funeral Chapel in Bozeman.

The family asks that any donations be made to Alberta Bair Theater, 2720 3rd Ave. N., Billings, MT 59101 or ICDRC, 1676 W. Hibiscus Blvd., Melbourne, FL 32901. (This organization cares for children with autism spectrum disorders, such as Jo’s grandson, Stephen.)
