John Raymond Downey passed away on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, at Cottonwood Healthcare in Woodland at the age of 77.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on July 18, 1928 to John and Elizabeth (Sorg) Downey, he attended area schools including Brooklyn Preparatory High School. Upon graduation he joined the Merchant Marines where he served from 1945 to 1947. Mr. Downey was a conductor for the New York subway system, prior to employment on Long Island where he joined the Hemstead Police Department. After working in law enforcement for several years, the family moved to Deltona, Florida where he worked in newspaper distribution for over 15 years. After moving to Vacaville in 1995, he eventually made Dunnigan home, where he resided for the past five years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Florence Downey, of Dunnigan; daughter, Patricia Helms, of Orlando, Florida; sons William Downey, of Winters and Gerald Downey, of Atlanta, Georgia, and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Edward Downey.
Interment services will be held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 17, 2006, at the Woodland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice in his memory.
Evergreen Funeral Services of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ruth Borchard, age 78, passed away at her home in Winters, California on Dec. 11, 2005. She was born in Miami, Arizona on Feb. 14, 1927 to Jacob and Marie Hinkle.
Ruth was an elementary school teacher in Arizona and Southern California until her marriage, when she became a homemaker. She married Alan Borchard in Camarillo, on Aug. 5, 1958. Ruth and Alan moved to Winters, in March of 1963.
Ruth was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and was the organist there for many years.
She is survived by her son, Joseph Borchard; daughter, Marie and her husband John Mark Wildenthal; grandchildren, Ruth Carolyn and John Alan Wildnethal; sister, Ann Featherston. She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant son, Alan Edward and a brother, Ed Hinkle.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church Building Fund, 511 Main Street Winters, California 95694 or to the Yolo County Hospice P.O. Box 1014 Davis, California 95617.

Carmen Rodarte passed away in her sleep from unknown causes on Jan. 19, 2006 in Vacaville. Born in Woodland on Jan. 26, 1972, she was 33 years old. Ms. Rodarte was a lifelong resident of Winters and graduated with the Winters High School Class of 1990. She was a graduate of Western Career College and worked as an optical technician in Vacaville. She served as “soccer mom” for the Vacaville Thunderbirds.
She is survived by her daughter Ylianna Rodarte, father Jose Rodarte of Winters, sister Rosa Rodarte of Winters, and brothers Alex, Jose and Sergio of Sacramento and Carlos of Winters, several nieces and nephews, and a friend, Patrick Rothacker and his daughter River Rothacker.
She was preceded in death my her mother, Paula Rodarte.
A Rosary was planned for Ms. Rodarte on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony Church in Winters. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Church. Burial will follow at the Winters Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a trust fund has been set up for Ylianna Rodarte. Memorial donations may be made to the Carmen Rodarte Memorial Fund, Travis Credit Union, P.O. Box 2069, Vacaville, CA, 95696, attn: MSA Dept. McCune Garden Chapel is in charge of the services.

Lem Bledsoe, age 86, passed away on Jan. 20, 2006. He was born on Sept. 25, 1919 in  Oklahoma to William and Minnie Edmonston Bledsoe. He married Dicie E. Constant on March 7, 1947 in Reno, Nevada.
Mr. Bledsoe joined the U.S. Army at age 21 where he served his country from 1941 to 1945 as a member of the 232nd Infantry, during this time he received the Bronze Star for Bravery. Lem was a strong man, he was extremely kind and very courageous, he took upon himself the responsibility of ensuring that all of his family members were well cared for. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, he was also a member of the V.F.W. in Winters and the American Legion in Vacaville. In 1983 Lem retired from P.G. & E. where he had been employed for 34 years. He always enjoyed a good hunting or fishing trip, he loved to camp and spent some very memorable times with family traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Dicie of Winters; children, Larry Gene Bledsoe (Carol) of Eden, Utah; Laura Diane Ford (William) of Clear Lake, and Douglas Jay Bledsoe of Winters, California; grandchildren, Larry Jr.; Douglas; Cheryl; Christine; Ronald Lem and Daniel Jay; Great Grandson, Matthew and a Great-Great Granddaughter, Hannah; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Edward Bledsoe; his parents; brothers, Clint Bledsoe; Jeff Bledsoe; Melvin Bledsoe; sisters, Eula Bledsoe; Mae Bledsoe; Eules Bledsoe; Mamie Baughman and Ruby Redmill.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church located at 512 First Street Winters, California. A viewing was held at the church one hour prior to services. Interment followed in the Winters Cemetery under the direction of Wiscombe’s Davis Funeral Chapel. Those who wish to sign a guest book on line may do so by visiting www.davisfuneral.com.

Mary Louise (Schneider) McGuire entered into eternal life on Jan. 22, 2006 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Sept. 15, 1931, in Wewoka,  Oklahoma.
Mary’s greatest joy was taking care of her family and home. She felt that raising her family was the most important job bestowed upon her. She and her husband, Audie, lived in Winters from 1950 to 1973.
She was a longtime member of the Assemblies of God Church and her last several years attended Woodland Christian Center.
She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Audie; daughters, Janis Berry, Margie Washabaugh and her husband, Randy, of Winters, Sheila Carbahal and her husband, Edward, of Winters, and her son Audie Michael McGuire. She will be deeply missed by her seven grandchildren, Jonathan Berry, Natalie and Nathan Washabaugh, Sean and Brandi Carrion, and John and Ryan Carbahal.
She is also survived by her four sisters, Lorene Wright, Marie Moore, Myrna Drake, and Carol Bailey, and by her brother, Ellis Schneider, and

Isaac M. Macias passed away in Davis. He was 66 years old. He was born on July 8, 1939 in Jilotan, Jalisco, Mexico, and went to elementary school in Mexico.
He was a farm laborer and an employee of Mariani Nut Company. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, in Winters, and a 28 year resident of Yolo County.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Maria A. Macias, of Winters; also 8 stepchildren; uncle and great uncle and many nieces and nephews, sister Trinity Macias and brothers Salvador and Julio Macias. He had 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Patricia (Mendoza) Macias and his sister Paulba Rodarte.
A funeral mass was held on Friday, Dec. 2 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, following a vigil service on Dec. 1. Father Chuck officiated. Burial was held at the Winters cemetery.
The Macias and Rosales families are thankful for the prayers, support and contributions they have received. De parte de familia Macias y Rosales, damos gracias a todos por su ayuda y su oracións.

Evelyn Cooling died at her home in Woodland on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at age 97.
She was born in South Wales, England, to the late James and Sarah Elizabeth Williams on July 19, 1908. She was a long-time Yolo County farmer, a 60-year member of Farmers Rice Cooperative and a 70-year member of Eastern Star. She was also a past member of  White Nile and the Yolo County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include Mrs. Cooling’s daughter, Marilyn Kaupke, of Davis; her granddaughter, Deirdre Cross and her husband Brian; her great-grandchildren, Tyler and Amy Cross, all of Winters, and her sister, Penelope Thompson of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John C. Cooling; her granddaughter, Diane Kaupke; brothers, Henry and Rayden Williams and her son-in-law, Charles Rominger Kaupke.
The family requests that memorials be made in Mrs. Coolings name to Yolo County Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617.
Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Jan. 18, at McNary’s Chapel, 458 College Street, Woodland. A funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 434 Cleveland Avenue, Woodland. Interment will follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park, 35036 County Road 22, Woodland.
McNary’s Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Phyllis Jean Clarke passed away peacefully at home in Winters on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, following a two year battle with cancer. She was 61 years old.
Phyllis was born on Sept. 25, 1944 in San Antonio,  Texas at the U. S. Air Force Base known as Randolph Field.
Phyllis moved to Winters in 1976. She was the proud daughter of the late Phil and Judy Montgomery, both of whom were very active in the community. Phil organized the Boys Club of America and was sports editor for the Winters Express. Judy had the Winters Dance Studio where many grateful students gained their poise and structured a solid foundation towards their future.
Phyllis was a devoted mom, loyal wife, loving daughter and generous grandmother. She was a true friend forever to many, and a genuine humanitarian. Phyllis believed in honesty, hardwork, family, respect, and good people.
Phyllis is survived by her family, David Lane, Darrell and Jill Lane, Richard and Laura Clarke, Mary Mackey, Steve Evans and Carol Goodrich; grandchildren, Megan, Hannah, Caleb, Eli and Corey Lane, Micaiah Clarke and Natasha Young.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Phil and Judy Montgomery; her husband, Peter T. Clarke; her mom Verdell Burnett; grandson Matthew (Lane) Hayes and the sunshine of her life, daughter Donna Marie Lane.
All friends and acquaintances are cordially invited to help “Celebrate the Life” of P.J. Clarke on Monday, Jan. 23, at 4 p.m. at the Pioneer Presbyterian Church, Wesley Hall, 205 Russell Street, Winters. A Phyllis Clarke Memorial Fund has been set up at First Northern Bank of Dixon. Donations in her name may be made there.
