Joanne Sernett Barry

Joanne Sernett Barry, 95, of Gilroy died June 29, 2003. She taught school at Live Oak High School from 1961 until retirement in 1973.

Joanne was born in Rolf, Iowa, on Dec. 11, 1907. Joanne graduated from Illinois Training School for Nurses, Cook County Hospital. She was a public health nurse in Chicago in the 1920s. She had a bachelor of science degree from CalPoly, San Luis Obispo and master’s degree in speech and hearing pathology from San Jose State University. With her late husband, she owned and managed local newspapers in Paso Robles from 1945-53.

She has been a parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church since 1972. Joanne loved to travel extensively with her late sister Helen. Her passions included reading, singing and playing games with her family.

She is survived by her son Thomas Barry and his wife, Sharon, of Huntington Beach; daughter Joby Huff and her husband, Jim, of Gilroy; daughter-in-law Carolyn Barry of Houston,  Texas; grandchildren Alan Barry and wife Maggie, of Rancho Santa Margarita, Thomas Barry and wife Tracie of Huntington Beach, Mike Barry and wife Pam of Las Flores, Ann Cleland of Redwood City, Colleen Barry of Houston, Katherine Huff of Grass Valley, Theresa Sanders of Turlock and Annie Deak and her husband Terry of Fortuna; great-grandchildren Frank, J.T., Randy and Tanya Sanders, Alyssa and Patrick Deak, Tommy, Katie and Christina Barry, Jason and Connor Barry, Derrick and Elaine Cleland; and great-great grandson Brandon Barry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, in 1966 and son, James, in 2001.

Funeral Mass was Monday at St. Mary’s Church with burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gilroy.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2065-C W. El Camino Real, Mountain View, CA 94040 or the Hanna Boys Center, P.O. Box 100, Sonoma, CA 95476-0100.

Jeanette M. Cooks

Jeanette M. Cooks, aformer resident of Auburn, died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Saint Louise Regional Hospital after a short illness.

She was the wife of 57 years to Walter L. Cooks.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and JoAnn Cooks; and granddaughters, Jackie and Jillian Cooks.

Private services under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home have been held.

Domingo Garza

Domingo “Americano” Garza Cardona died July 5, 2003, in Gilroy.

Mr. Cardona retired from Gilroy Foods after 30 years of employment. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Velia Padilla Cardona; children Arthur Vargas Jr. and wife Mary of Sacramento, Frank P. Vargas of Gilroy, Erlinda Vargas of Sacramento, Daniel P. Vargas and wife Chris of Sacramento, Jennie Velasquez of Sacramento, Stella P. Gaucin of Hollister and Dolores P. Garcia and husband Benny of Hollister; grandchildren Arthur, June, Katrina, Frankie Jr., Jesse, Teresa, Robert, Lisa, Nicole, Juanita, Alfred Jr., David, John, Michael and Michelle; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters; and one brother.

He also will be missed by Shorty.

Vigil Service will be at 6:30 tonight, July 8, at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy. Services begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Services will be followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church for Mass. Entombment will be at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park.

Edward Cruz Jr.

Edward Cruz Jr. died July 1, 2003, in Gilroy. He was 70.

Edward was a resident of Morgan Hill for eight years and worked as a plating supervisor.

Edward was interested in Little League baseball and all kinds of sports. He was in the Navy during the Korean War. He also enjoyed model building, especially World War II aircraft. He enjoyed listening to jazz from the 40's and 50's.

Edward is survivied by his sons, Pete (Trish) Cruz, and Edward Cruz III; mother Consuelo Cruz of Morgan Hill; siblings David (Helen), Gene and Bob Cruz, Cecelia Cruz and Sylvia (Ernie) Hirose; and grandchildren Tony, Derek, Alyssa and Gregory Cruz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, and his father, Edward Cruz Sr.

Visitation will be 5-7 tonight, July 8, at  Johnson Funeral Home . Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. in the chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, at St. Catherine Church.

Marion O. Elliott

Marion O. Elliott died June 27, 2003, in Morgan Hill. She was a past matron of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her son Robert (Tammy) Elliott; grandchildren John, April and Kimberly Elliott; sister-in-law Mary Luke; nieces Sue and Kathy Elliott; and nephews Donald, James and William Luke, James and Steve Elliott and Edward Rockwell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Elliot,t and her brother James E. Luke.

Visitation will be from 6-8 tonight at  Johnson Funeral Home. Marion will be buried in Peabody, Mass., at the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park.

Domingo "Americano" Cardona

Mr. Cardona retired from Gilroy Foods after 30 years of employment. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He will be also missed by Shorty.

Funeral services were Wednesday at St. Mary's Church followed by entombment at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park.

Arrangements were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

John W. Spencer

John W. Spencer, 89, died as a result of an automobile accident, on June 25, 2003. He was returning to his home from a short trip with his son and daughter-in-law.

Mr. Spencer was born in Portland, Ore. He was raised in Southern California and attended schools there. In 1938, he married Muriel Goodhart of Long Beach. She preceded him in death in 1993.

For many years Mr. Spencer was in business in Gilroy. He owned and operated Spencer NH3 Service, an agricultural chemical business. From 1966 until his retirement, he owned and operated with his children, Spencer Rental Service. During his retirement years, Mr. Spencer and his wife traveled extensively in Europe and the Pacific.

Mr. Spencer was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in Europe. He served from 1943-46 in the 16th Armored Division under General Patton.

John will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

Mr. Spencer is survived by his children Susan Spencer of Hollister and Mark Spencer of Gilroy and daughters-in-law Patty Spencer and Mary Kay Spencer of Paradise; grandchildren and spouses Mary  White and husband Alan, Brian Spencer and wife Kristin, all of Paradise, and Keith Spencer and wife Kristen of Gilroy; and great-grandchildren Matthew and Sarah  White, Jacob, Zachary, Luke and Nicholas Spencer, all of Paradise.

His son, Gordon Spencer, preceded him in death in 1977.

Cremation has already taken place. Memorial services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

The family asks that any donations be made to a favorite charity.
