Joe Vega

Joe Vega died July 20, 2003, at Santa Teresa Hospital in San Jose after complications from a fall. He was 78.

Mr. Vega was the loving husband of 57 years to Gloria Vega of Gilroy; dear father and father-in-law of Robert Vega of Minneapolis, Minn., Patricia and Paul Kloecker of Gilroy, Benjamin and Tina Vega of Gilroy, Al and Rhonda Vega of Dallas,  Texas and Laura and Mike Simoneau of Gilroy; grandfather of Valerie Kloecker of San Francisco, Joseph Kloecker of San Diego, Elizabeth Vega of Minneapolis, Benjamin Vega of Gilroy, Patrick Vega of Dallas, Jennifer Simoneau, Alexander Vega and Jalen Simoneau of Gilroy; sister Lupe Herrrera of Seguin,  Texas; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his sister Virginia; and daughter-in-law, Lynda Vega, survived by

Mr. Vega was raised in Seguin,  Texas. He moved to Salinas in 1943 as a member of the Army Air Corps. He met Gloria Placensia at a local dance and they married Aug. 15, 1945 (VJ Day), and settled in Gilroy in 1946 where they have lived for the last 57 years.

Mr. Vega was an active member of his community throughout his life. He was an auxiliary Gilroy Police Officer 1956-61, a devoted Little League baseball coach from 1956-64 and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Gilroy Post 6309. He worked as a welder from 1947-49 at Bee Gee Corp. He co-owned Tony's Place on Monterey Street from 1952-54 and then worked as a welder at Air-O-Fan from 1954-64 and Federal Pacific Electric, Milpitas, from 1964 to retirement in 1988.

Mr. Vega was an avid gardener, golfer and sports fan. The greatest joy in his life came from gatherings in his home with family, friends and good food. He also enjoyed annual camping trips with his wife, Gloria, and his children and grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his integrity and loyalty to his family and friends but most of all for his loving smile.

A private service was held with family and friends and a military ceremony by VFW Post 6309 Honor Guard at Habing Family Funeral Home. Burial service with additional military honors was held at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery near Santa Nella.

The family asks that any donations be made to Gilroy VFW Post 6309 in honor of those who served our country.

Angel Espinoza

Angel Espinoza, 39, died July 29, 2003, in Gilroy.

Espinoza was born in Phoenix, Ariz.

He is survived by his parents Fidel and Sally Espinoza of Gilroy; siblings Fidel Espinoza Jr. of Morgan Hill, Michael Espinoza of Gilroy, Priscilla Griego of Morgan Hill, Margie Mendez of Hollister, Ray Quiban, Carol Avilla, Sandy McGalliard, Ricky Torres, Paul Torres, Louie Torres, all of Arizona, and Art Torres of San Diego; children Angel Espinoza Jr. and Anthony Espinoza, both of Gilroy; wife, Gracie Martinez, of Gilroy; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Services were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

Leroy T. Haygood

Leroy T. Haygood, 63, died Aug. 1, 2003, in San Jose.

Leroy was born in Drumwright, Okla., on April 13, 1940. He came to Gilroy with his family as a baby and spent most of his life there. He attended Gilroy Schools. Leroy was a construction worker and enjoyed fishing, camping, cooking and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Jody Haygood of San Jose; children Darryl Haygood of Morgan Hill, Deanna Haygood of Morgan Hill, Alan Haygood of Gilroy, Billy Haygood San Jose and Katie Haygood of San Jose; grandchildren Christopher Haygood of Morgan Hill, Ashley Haygood of Morgan Hill, Aaron Haygood of Gilroy and Laura Rose Ramos of Morgan Hill; brothers and sisters Albert Haygood of Gilroy, Leon Haygood of Gilroy, Tommy Haygood of Tracey, Wanda Parks of Patterson and Kathy Ledford of Gustine.

He was preceded in death by his son Larry Haygood; sister Gracie Haney; parents Tom and Rose Haygood; and former wife, Laura McCurdy.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Habing Family Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.

Donald Garcia

Donald Garcia died Aug. 6, 2003, in Gilroy following a brief illness.

Donald was born in Willmington 72 years ago and settled in the Morgan Hill area 40 years ago. Don was a truck driver for 45 years and was working for TVT in Gilroy when he retired. He loved working in his garage, watching wrestling , fishing and spending time with his family. He always enjoyed a home-cooked meal.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Garcia, of Morgan Hill; children and their spouse Donna and Milton Gonzalez of Gilroy, Donald E., Jr. and Glenda Garcia of Middletown, Erica and Art Suniga of Gilbert, Ariz.; grandchildren Israel D. and his wife Rachel Gonzalez of Hollister, Joshua Garcia of Coinjock, N.C., Travis Garcia of Newark, Zoi and her husband Raul Alvarez of Gilroy, Madison Gonzalez of Gilroy, Hailey Suniga of Gilbert, and Hannah Suniga of Gilbert; great-grandchildren Trevor Gonzalez, Jasmine Gonzalez and Aliyah Gonzalez, all of Hollister; brothers, sisters and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Garcia; parents Pedro and Mary Garcia; and brother Steven Garcia.

Vigil Service will be at 7 tonight, Aug. 8, at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy. Service will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home and then proceed to St. Mary’s Church (Our Lady's Chapel) for a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.

Ruth M. Spencer

Ruth M. (Perry) Spencer died Aug. 6, 2003. She was 87.

Mrs. Spencer was born in Hollister. In the 1850s her great-grandparents came from Cornwall, Englan, to the Almaden Quicksilver Mines. In 1860, the family moved to their hotel and stagecoach depot known as the 15 Mile Station, north of Morgan Hill. When the railroad came to the valley, the railroad named the location Perry Station. Her father was born at Perry Station. In the mid-1880s, the family moved to their ranch on Fairview and Fallon Road in Hollister. Her grandfather was a San Benito County supervisor.

Being reared in Hollister, Mrs. Spencer attended Sacred Heart Grammar School, San Benito High School and Gavilan College. After Gavilan, she attended O’Connor Hospital School of Nursing in San Jose. In 1939 she married Ross Spencer and moved to Mountain View.

Ruth was very active with and devoted to her family. She will be remembered for her quick wit and sense of humor. She loved music, dancing, working in the garden and her unconditional love for animals. Mrs. Spencer was active in St. Joseph’s Church, YLI, local PTAs and parent groups. Recently, she was awarded her 1000-hour pin as a volunteer with the El Camino Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by her children, Bradley (Rene) Spencer of Morgan Hill, Robert (Deborah) Spencer of San Jose, Susan (Richard) Moore of Mountain View, grandchildren Devin, Brynne, Collin, Maddie Moore, Jaimie Moore; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Spencer, and brother, Earl Perry.

A Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mountain View. Inurnment services will be conducted at Santa Clara Catholic Cemetery at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19.

The family asks that any donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Activity Center, 2380 Enborg Lane, San Jose, CA 95128.

Arrangements were under the direction of Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary, Mountain View.

Lee Allan Wagner

Lee Allan Wagner died Aug. 5, 2003, at home with his family.

Lee was born Sept. 18, 1943, in San Francisco to Shelby and Isabelle Wagner. He perpetuated his family's military lineage by serving in the U.S. Air Force during the 60s, then went on to a 38-year technical career at Philco, Fairchild and Tektronix.

Lee was a devoted and loving husband to Barbara, his adoring wife of over 31 years. Together, their legacy included children Lynne, Kim and Jerry, who together with son in-law Bill and daughter in-law Cyndie blessed Lee and Barbara with six grandchildren: Edward, James, Megan, Eric, Saxon and Schaefer.

Lee is dearly missed, but his memory is wonderful and complete.

Lee's life will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Foothills Foursquare Church, 8335 Church St., Gilroy.

Arrangements were handled by  Johnson Funeral Home.
