Aurora Rivera
Aurora Rivera of Gilroy died Aug. 10, 2003. She was 73.
Aurora was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, and had lived in Gilroy for the last 40 years. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and friend. She was full of spirit and will be greatly missed by her family.
She is survived by her sons John Guerrero of Gilroy, Martin and Sara Guerrero of Newman, Art Guerrero of Gilroy, Leo and Cynthia Guerrero of Gilroy; granchildren, Elizbeth and Henry Chavez of Newman, Jessica and Raul Lopez of Newman, Martin Jr. of Newman, Priscilla Guerrero of Newman, Veronica Guerrero of Newman, Michael Guerrero of Gilroy and Leo Guerrero of Gilroy; and six great-grandchildren of six.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, beginning with a visitation at 9 a.m. at Habing Family Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Church, Gilroy. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to a gathering following the service at 1402 Mantelli Drive, Gilroy.
Maria J. Zuniga
Maria J. Zuniga, 87, died Nov. 10, 2002, at her home in San Jose. She was born in Sonora, Mexico on May 3, 1915.
She is survived by her sons Silverio Zuniga of San Jose and former wife Esther Velador of Morgan Hill, Frank Zuniga of San Jose and former wife Edna Zuniga of Santa Rosa, Robert Zuniga and his wife Amelia of Morgan Hill; daughter-in-law Sylvia Zuniga of Clear Lake Oaks; and sisters Isabel Nevarez of Hayward and Amelia Campos of Whittier. Maria had 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her son Charlie Zuniga.
Funeral Mass was this morning at St. Catherine Church with interment at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
Frederick Edgar Borns
Lt. Col. Frederick Edgar Borns, 83, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2002.
He was born May 4, 1919 in Gary, Ind., to Fred A. and Mary Margaret Borns.
He was the loving husband of Mary Dean Borns (Holmes) and father to Mary Borns-Stern of Suwanee, Ga., Fred G. Borns, Mark W. Borns and Mike H. Borns of Phoenix, Ariz. Mr. Borns’ grandchildren are Frederic Stern, Mary Elizabeth Stern, Tom Borns, Zachary Borns and Hallie Borns.
After graduation in 1937 from Horace Mann High School in Gary, he started a successful distributing business for Red Dot Foods covering Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Iowa. On April 18, 1942, he turned this enterprise over to his brother, Walter Borns, after being drafted for Army service.
While studying meteorology at Chanute Field, Ill., he was accepted as a pilot cadet into the Army Air Corps. Flight training led to qualification as a B-17 command pilot in the 8th Air Force. He flew 35 combat missions over Europe between June and August 1944. Targets included dangerous early raids on Berlin and supply drops to the Free French. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. Mr. Borns remained in the Air Force Reserve until 1979.
After World War II, Borns moved to California where he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California. While attending law school, he met Mary Dean Holmes, a medical technologist. They were married in November 1948. The birth of their first child forced a cessation of law studies, and Mr. Borns joined Pan American World Airways as a navigator on long ocean routes being pioneered by Pan Am at the time. Although combat-qualified, he was a master of the use of the sextant for navigation.
As a captain, he commanded the first Pan Am flight to Moscow during the early months of “Detente” in November 1972. Retiring from Pan Am in 1975, Borns was free to manage his walnut orchard on Center Avenue in Morgan Hill and to pursue his hobby of investing.
Col. Borns was a devout member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and a member of the Order of Daedalians, Quiet Birdmen, and the Ox-5 club.
A Rosary will be at 7 tonight at Johnson’s Funeral Home and a Memorial Mass will be at St. Catherine’s Parish Hall at noon Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
Kenneth D. Spann
Kenneth D. Spann died Nov. 6, 2002, in Atascadero. He was 68
Kenneth served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a business owner in the mid 70’s in Morgan Hill as a CB installater and repairman. He started his career in law enforcement as a reserve police officer with Morgan Hill Police. He was employed with the Coalinga Police Department for four years, with two years as the rank of sergeant. In 1980 he was one of the first officers hired by Atascadero Police when the city incorporated. He served as police officer with Atascadero for a total of 13 years. He was the first officer to retire from the deptartment. During his career he created the YSB (Youth Services Bureau) and after school program for kids in Coalinga, the NYPUM in Atascadero, a dirt bike riding intervention program for troubled youth. He also created the Senior Citizen Police Volunteer Program in Atascadero, and the city’s first neighborhood watch program.
Hobbies include boating, riding motorcycles, CB/Ham radio, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife,Ruth Helen Spann of Atascadero; stepmother Ruth Spann of Lodi; sons Kenneth D. Spann Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., Steven M. Spann and his wife Tracie of Centerton, Ark., and Ron D. Spann and his wife Sherry of Paso Robles; daughter Linda E. Reece and her husband Rodney Sr. of Atascadero; grandchildren Linda, Joline, Ron II, Victoria, LeeAnn and Kristin Spann, Ashley N. Notestin, Rodney and Kenneth Reece, James Mulhall and his wife Erica, and Jason and Kathleen Mulhall.
He was preceded in death by his father Richard D. Spann; mother Dorothy Evelyn Spann; and brother John Richard Spann.
Arrangements were under direction of Keuhl-Nicolay Funeral Home of Paso Robles.
The family asks that any donations be made to the Seniors Citizens Volunteer Patrol, Atascadero Police Department.
Ken Tougas
Long-time community volunteer Ken Tougas died Thursday after a battle with cancer. Services are pending.
Patsy Marie Katen
Patsy Marie Katen, 39, died Aug. 10, 2003, in Gilroy in an auto accident.
Patsy attended South Valley Community Church and was employed at Wal-Mart in Gilroy.
She is survived by her her mother Joyce Vieira of Gilroy; father Richard Katen of San Jose; brothers Richard Katen of Gilroy and Robert Katen of Stevensville, Mont.; and grandparents Ed and Dorothy Mosby of San Martin. She is the aunt of Coleman Katen, Carson Katen and Jade Katen; niece of Robert Vieira, Leonard Katen, William Katen, Virgie Katen and Christine Dezell.
She was a loyal friend to her two dogs Duke Thomas and Cottontail.
Her uncle Art Vieira preceded her in death.
Services will be at 6 tonight, Aug. 15, at South Valley Community Church in Gilroy. Visitation will be held at Habing Family Funeral Home beginning at noon today. Graveside services will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery
at 10 a.m. Saturday where she will be buried with her grandfather, Joseph Vieira.

Lee Allen Wagner
Lee Allen Wagner died Aug. 5, 2003, at home with his family.
Lee was born Sept. 18, 1943, in San Francisco to Shelby and Isabelle Wagner. He perpetuated his family's military lineage by serving in the U.S. Air Force during the 60s, then went on to a 38-year technical career at Philco, Fairchild and Tektronix.
Lee was a devoted and loving husband to Barbara, his adoring wife of over 31 years. Together, their legacy included children Lynne, Kim and Jerry, who together with son in-law Bill and daughter in-law Cyndie blessed Lee and Barbara with six grandchildren: Edward, James, Megan, Eric, Saxon and Schaefer.
Lee is dearly missed, but his memory is wonderful and complete.
Lee's life will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Foothills Foursquare Church, 8335 Church St., Gilroy.
Arrangements were handled by Johnson Funeral Home.
