Bob Oberg
Bob Oberg died Aug. 6, 2003, at Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo after a strong battle for life following a heart attack.
The son of Harold and Mary Jane Oberg, he was born Harold Daly Oberg in Salinas on Aug. 24, 1948, and graduated from Palma High School, Hartnell Junior College and CalPoly, San Luis Obispo.
When young he worked on the Oberg Ranch in Madrone and enjoyed his mother’s family Atkinson Estate on Uvas Creek where their family settled in 1850.
He chose to make San Luis Obispo his home and early in a sales career his photo was often featured in Stereo Warehouse Sound advertisements in Playboy and other magazines gaining him the nick name “Brillo Bob” and earning him a worldwide reputation in the stereo sales industry. A private pilot, member of the Eagles lodge and the San Luis Blues Society. He has lived for many years in Morro Bay.
Bob loved to play guitar and sing and his passion for music led him to promoting the Blues and as past president and long time program director for the San Luis Obispo Blues Society he was known to many Blues players who vied for scheduling in the SLO Blues events. Bob also originated the Santa Margarita Blues Festival, the Arroyo Grande events, and the benefit Blues concerts at the Paso Robles Hot Springs resort.
Each year he participated in the Strawberry Festival in Yosemite as a member of Camp Crud, The Live Oak Music Festival and the Santa Cruz Blues Festival. Bob also sponsored an annual event known as “the Hoot ‘n’ Anny” on the family estate on the Uvas Creek, where friends could spend several days camping, playing, singing and enjoying the beautiful creek, redwoods and country side.
He is survived by his sister Kristine Hernandez; nieces Anne Nu'ez, Vickie and Amelia Hernandez; nephew Christopher Hernandez; grand nieces Nicole and Natalie Nu'ez and Justine Osu'a; aunt and uncle John and Elena Moreno in Morgan Hill; and cousins Glen and Kim Moreno and Candice Cunha.
A musical memorial is planned for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Morro Bay Aerie of the Fraternal Order of Eagles where Bob was a long time member.
Hoot ‘n’ Anny 44 in summer 2004 will be Bob’s memorial at the Atkinson Estate where he loved to hunt, hike, fish relax and play music.
Manuel Romero
Manuel Romero of Gilroy died Aug. 16, 2003, at his home. He was 69.
Manuel was a native of San Luis Obispo. He moved to the Santa Clara Valley as a young boy and attended Live Oak High School before moving to Gilroy. He was well known throughout the area for building Triumph motorcycle racing engines and owned and operated a machine shop in Gilroy for more than 40 years. He loved tinkering and manufacturing out of his shop and spent many pleasant hours there. Manuel was employed for Geo. E. Hall Motorcycles in Gilroy for 12 years. Prior to his retirement he worked for South Valley Refuse. He was an avid motorcycle rider and racer and enjoyed camping with his family and friends at Pismo Beach. He always said, “If you are going to come over and party, you are going to party hearty.” He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Romero of Gilroy; children Bryan Romero of Gilroy, son and daughter-in-law Manuel Luis and Ginger Romero of Newman, son Manuel Anthony Romero of Gilroy, daughter Suzanne Romero of Gilroy, daughter Karen Romero, daughter Sharen Romero, daughter Norma Romero and daughter Susan Romero; stepchildren Kim and Carlene Romero; brothers Richard Luis and Inez Romero of El Sobrante, Jesse Ybarra of Gilroy and Tony Gonzalez of Gilroy; sister Ester Lopez of Garnerville, Nev.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at his home. The family asks that any donations be made to the Kidney Foundation. A trust account has been set up in Manuel’s name at Wells Fargo Bank, Acct. # 0314036948.
Arrangements are under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy.
Jerome "Jerry" Pierce
Jerome “Jerry” Pierce Barnier, 81, died Aug. 16, 2003, in Morgan Hill at his 64th high school reunion.
A veterinarian and father of four, Jerry was devoted to what he loved: his wife, children, his veterinary practice and the Seattle Mariners. A strict disciplinarian, he made sure his children towed the line, but he was also a fun-loving guy who played baseball with his three daughters and son. He loved ice cream.
Born in 1921 in Morgan Hill, Jerry graduated from Live Oak High School. While in college, he enlisted to fight in World War II and was one of a handful selected from Naval flight training to join the Marines. He proudly served in Marine Flight Division 131. At a Mills College “tea dance” in 1942, he met Joyce Root. On their second date, he told her he was going to marry her. Three years later he did.
After graduating with a B.S. from San Jose State University in 1948, he earned a degree in veterinary medicine from U.C. Davis. He moved to Kent, Wash., in 1954, where he began his own veterinary practice eventually opening the West Valley Veterinary Hospital and later, the Spring Glen Veterinary Hospital. He served as a Kent city councilman and as a member and president of the Rotary club.
Jerry believed in hard work. Even though he was battling a degenerative disease that left him barely able to walk or turn his head, he continued to practice part-time at his veterinary clinic until he died. Recently he told his wife, Joyce, who has always said she will be an opera singer in her next life, he will return as a baseball player and they will meet again when she sings the “National Anthem” at one of his games.
He leaves behind his wife, Joyce Barnier; his children Bonnie Krupp, Jean Barnier, Jerome Pierce Barnier Jr., and Beckie Barnier; and 10 grandchildren.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers any donations be made to the King County Animal Control, 21615 64th Ave. So., Kent, WA 98032. Services were today at Marlatt’s Funeral Home on Central Avenue in Kent.
Rebecca Ciraulo
Rebecca Ciraulo died Aug. 16, 2003, in Morgan Hill. She was 50.
She was the loving wife of Stan Ciraulo; beloved mother of Brad (and wife Stacy), Carrie (and husband Weston Lemos) and Joshua Ciraulo; dear sister of Robert and William Browning Jr.; daughter of William Browning Sr. and the late Patricia Browning; and dearest daughter-in-law of Anthony and Margaret Ciraulo.
A memorial service took place at 1 p.m. today, Aug., 22, at South Valley Christian Church, 590 Shawnee Ave., San Jose, under direction of Darling-Fischer Chapel of the Hills in Los Gatos. Internment Private.
In lieu of flowrs the family asks that any donations be made to the Rebecca Ciraulo Memorial Fund c/o South Valley Christian Church.
JoAnn Nylander
JoAnn Nylander died August 15, 2003, at her Morgan Hill home. She was 71.
JoAnn enjoyed reading, rides in the country, the beach, shoppping, parties and eating out with family and friends.
She is survived by her sons Frederick A. and Michelle Nylander of Morgan Hill, Curtis W. and Marcy Nylander of San Ramon; daughter Janice Dourity of Morgan Hill; grandchildren Paul Nylander of San Jose, Susan E. Nylander of Half Moon Bay, David Nylander of Morgan Hill, Erin Henson of San Jose, John Stagnero of San Jose, Melissa Nylander of San Ramon and Forrest Nylander of San Ramon; great-grandchild Brogan Henson of San Jose; stepmother Jane Gleason Trent of Oregon; twin sister Josephine May Sargent of New Jersey; sisters Beverly Trent Coyne and Christine Trent DeLeo; brothers Richard L. Trent of Maryland and Glenn W. Trent; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred F. Nylander.
Funeral services will at 7 tonight, Aug. 22, at Johnson Funeral Home.
Clara Ann Bonaccorso
Clara Ann Bonaccorso died Aug. 21 at her home in Morgan Hill.
Ann was born in Santa Clara in 1925 and lived most of her life in Morgan Hill. She graduated from Live Oak High School in 1943.
Ann was an active member of St. Catherine's parish and formerly volunteered with its Reach Out program. In addition to family gatherings, Ann loved to read, enjoyed doing needlepoint and having frequent luncheon engagements with sister-in-law, Ann Gualtieri and friends. She was a current member of the Itlalian Mothers Club and St. Catherine's Over 50's group and a former member of Women in Touch.
Ann was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who lived her life in loving service for her family.
She is survived by her son Matthew Joseph Bonaccorso and his wife, Timary Ann of La Canada Flintridge; granddaughters Annie, 12, and Emily, 5, whom she loved very much; brother John Moreno and his wife, Elena; and sister Mary Puppo and husband Victor, all living in Morgan Hill.
Father Edwin of St. Catherine Church led the Vigil Service on Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home. Father Truyen led the Funeral Mass on Monday.
Ann was laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery
alongside her husband, Matthew, who preceded her in death.
Adolph Kretschmer
Adolph Louis Kretschmer died Aug. 22, 2003, in Gilroy at the age of 97.
He was born in Belleville, Ill. on Dec. 21, 1905, to Louis and Julia Kretschmer.
Adolph was a shoe cutter of fine women’s shoes and was an airplane mechanic during World War II. He was a proud craftsman and a devoted Catholic and loved his family very much. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by the love of his life for 72 years his wife, Josephine Kretschmer of Morgan Hill; daughter Betty Harvey and her husband Richard of Morgan Hill; grandchildren, Jackie (Doug) Hummel, Ken Merck, Karen (Peter) Paulhe, and Janet Delfino; and great-grandchildren Abraham Ludlow, Lisa Wilson, Michael Gross, Marie Gross and David Delfino.
Funeral Mass was at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 26, at St. Joseph’s Church, 10110 N. DeAnza Blvd., Cupertino.
Interment was at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, Los Altos.
Arrangements were under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
