Donald “Richard” Bowden

Donald “Richard” Bowden, 61, of Morgan Hill, died Aug. 16, 2003. Services have been held. Burial was in Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose, under the direction of Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Frank Schalk

Frank Schalk, born March 5, 1935, died Aug. 27, 2003, after a long battle with cancer with his wife and loving family at his side.

Although relatively short, Schalk lived a truly unique and interesting life. As a child, Schalk was a gifted musician and played guitar and banjo in a country western band with his four older brothers. Upon graduation as co-valedictorian of his high school, Schalk joined the Air Force to earn money for college. While in the Air Force he became a Russian language specialist and was stationed in Germany during the Cold War.

After returning to the states, Schalk began his college engineering studies but was lured away by an amazing job opportunity as a research technician, which had him traveling to La Paz Bolivia where he soon met his wife, Maria Nel.

Schalk spent the next five years in Bolivia with his new wife and saw the birth of his first two sons, Rudy and Christian. Schalk soon received a new assignment in the North Pole. After his six-month assignment, he returned to Bolivia and then moved with his family to  Oklahoma and finished his Bachelor's of Science in Physics and Mathematics.

Schalk then went to work for Western Electric and was part of a team that invented a robotic wire harness-manfacturing machine.

Schalk's third son, Schalklin Jr., was born in  Oklahoma at this time. Schalk's experience with software and robotics brought him to Silicon Valley in the 70's where he continued his career at Xynetics and later Lockheed Martin Aerospace.

Schalk was a generous, kind and gifted individual with a passion for languages, cultures and music. He was also talented with his hands and loved working on numerous home projects.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Nela; sons Rudy, Christian, Schalklin; daughter-in-law Vidya; and grandsons Adrian and Julian. He also is survived by brothers Robert, Olin and Royce. In addition to his immediate family, Schalk will be missed by his large and extended family and friends from all over the world.

He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Sydney.

Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. today, Sept. 2,  Johnson Funeral Home with funeral service to follow at 3 p.m. in the chapel.

Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Herbert Hidalgo

Herbert “Shorty” Hidalgo, 51, died Aug. 29, 2003, in Gilroy following a lengthy illness.

Herbert, born in San Jose, was raised in Gilroy and graduated from Gilroy High School in 1970. After school he began a 33-year career as a diesel mechanic and was employed at Hildebrand Trucking Company in Pajaro.

He also started his own trucking company, Hidalgo and Son Trucking in Aromas in 1996. He enjoyed, fishing, attending hot rod shows, drag races, motorcycle rally's and Rolling Stones concerts. He was in the process of building a Fat Boy.

He is survived by his wife, Joni of Aromas; daughters Lettie of Gilroy and Deanna of Aromas; son John and wife Estela of Gilroy; grandchildren Dante, Fullard, Maryjane, Miara, Elijah and Noah Hidalgo, all of Gilroy.

Herbert is the son-in-law of Janice Martorano of Morgan Hill and is also survived by his siblings and their spouses Mike and Frances Hidalgo, Ralph and Gwen Hidalgo of Campbell, Carmen and Don Clevenger of Kelseyville, Romona Renteria of Delano, Gloria and Gil Garcia, Mary and Bob Angulo, Rita and Max Heredia and Henry Hidalgo, all of Gilroy, and his brothers and sisters-in-law John and Susan Martorano of Hollister, Janet Harrington of  Oklahoma and Olivia Hidalgo of Bakersfield.

He was the stepfather of Richard J. Soto and his wife Penny of Morgan Hill, Jared Soto of Brentwood, stepgrandfather of Richard Jr. and Nicholas Soto of Morgan Hill. He also is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends, including good friends, Mike Sakamoto, of Gilroy, Tony Guevarra of Watsonville, and Kelvin Hildebrand of Watsonville, and Hildebrand Trucking Co. employees and sub haulers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raphael and Josefa Hidalgo; brother Joe Hidalgo; father- in-law Schalk J. Martorano and his beloved cocker spaniel, Sandy Dog.

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all.

Vigil Service will be at 6:30 tonight, Sept. 2, at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and then proceed to St. Mary’s Church for a Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow.

Jane Brown Wick

Jane Brown Wick died Sept. 1, 2003, at her daughter's home in Morgan Hill after a valiant fight with an illness.

Jane was born Oct. 30, 1927, in Nutly, N.J. She was 75 beautiful years old.

Jane was an ever-present member of the Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church and the Thursday morning Bible study group. A member of the church's Women of Wisdom group, she loved her sisters in Christ.

Jane's memory will always bring smiles and warmth to the heart. She brightened everyone's life with her presence.

She is survived by her second husband of seven years, Ronald S. Wick of Lexington, Ky.; brother the Rev. Richard Eyer of Wisconsin; son Jeffery T. Brown of  Louisiana; daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Barry Schwartz; grandchildren Dustin and Erin Schwartz all of Morgan Hill; grandaughter and her family Amie Briggs and great-granddaughter Katelin Briggs of Georgia.

In Kentucky her family of Wicks includes Polly and Howard Dame, Gordon and Amy Dame, Nancy and Karl Hamm, Brian, David and Terry and Robyn and Dave Sloop.

She was preceded in death by her first husband of 49 years, Richard C. Brown of Morgan Hill.

A celebration of her life took place Thursday, Sept. 4, at the Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church.

The family asks that any donations be made to the Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church or to Odyssey Hospice.

Arrangements were under the direction of  Johnson Funeral Home.

Dustin Corey Parks

Dustin Corey Parks of Morgan Hill died unexpectedly on Aug. 27 at the age of 33.

He was a son, brother, uncle, musician and friend to many. He worked for A Tool Shed in Morgan Hill and Campbell.

He is survived by his parents, Ralph and Trudy Parks of Morgan Hill; sister Tracy Parks of Gilroy; nieces Stephanie Dorsey of Morgan Hill and Ashley Dorsey of Gilroy; nephews Steven Webenbauer of San Martin and Joshua Carman of Gilroy; and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by grandparents Rex and Mollie Persons, Earl and Maxine Parks and aunt Joyce Parks.

A memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Morgan Hill Bible Church, 15055 Monterey Road.

The family asks that any donations be made to Morgan Hill Bible Church.
