Eugene Robert Bjorklund

Eugene Robert Bjorklund of Morgan Hill died Sept. 9, 2003, in San Jose.

Bjorklund was born in Wisconsin on June 21, 1926. He attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Bjorklund of Morgan Hill; daughter and her husband, Teresa and Del Nambiar of Hayward; brother Ernest Bjorklund; niece Robin  Schmidt; and nephew Pat Murphy..

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at  Johnson Funeral Home.

John Joseph McDermott Sr.

John Joseph McDermott Sr. died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003.

John was born in Camden, N.J. on Aug. 5, 1936, but has lived in California for 31 years. He lived in Hollister from 1971-85 while he was president of Leatherback Industries. John moved to Fresno in 1995 and was national sales manager for RGM Products of Fresno. He is a graduate of La Salle University, Philadelphia. He was a member of ARMA, Western States Roofing Contractors Association and NRCA of which he was an active board member.

John was a devoted husband and father who loved spending time with his family. He was a very hard-working man, but he lived a very full and happy life, each day he was with us. John will be loved always and forever missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Loretta; sons John Jr., Kelly and Michael; daughters Shawn and Clancy; 17 grandchildren; sisters Patsy and brother-in-law Medio, Florence, Kathleen and brother-in-law Jack Herbert, Alice and brother-in-law Jim Kelly, Joan; many dear nieces and nephews; and his mother-in-law Gertrude Staab.

Funeral Mass was Thursday, Sept. 18, at St. Anthony's Parish in Fresno. Graveside services were at noon today at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.

The family asks that any donations be made to Palma or Notre Dame high schools in Salinas.

Arrangements were under the direction of  Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns and Blair Funeral Home in Fresno.

Alifonso “Poncho” M. Orosco

Alifonso “Poncho” M. Orosco was born June 12, 1946, in Big Spring,  Texas, and died Sept. 15, 2003.

Al was very proud to have served in the armed forces. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and sharp wit; the way he lived his life, loving and caring for all; his willingness to help all in need; his love and skill for photography and billiards and most of all for his unconditioned love and a smile that touched so many hearts. He was an avid fan of the Raiders and Marilyn Monroe. He worked for John Tomasello of Tomasello's Floor Covering.

He is survived by sons Al Jr., his wife Rachel, and Jeremy, his wife Dina of Gilroy; and grandchildren Zackary, Ryan, Deanna, Jeremy Jr., and Dolores all of Gilroy; sisters and brothers,Sofia Carrillo of Gilroy, Frances Hail of Pinole, Juan Orosco Sr. of Gilroy, Christina Montez of Folsom, Dolores Vaca of Georgia, Maria Lucy Sanchez of Gilroy, Jesse Orosco Sr. of Gilroy, Juana O. Kenney of Gilroy, Peter Orosco Sr. of Gilroy, Polly Orosco of San Jose, Lolly Will of San Jose, Elena Helen Narvaez of Gilroy, Joe Orosco of Gilroy; special Uncle Benito Orosco of Gilroy; 41 nephews and nieces; 43 great-nephews and nieces and three great-great nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents Juan and Bernarda Orosco.

The Orosco family would like to thank friends and family for their condolences and prayers. Al touched each of us in his own special way, leaving each of us with our own special memories.

All are welcome to join in celebrating Al's life at the First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave. in Gilroy, beginning with the viewing on Thursday, Sept. 18th, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral service was at noon today Sept. 19, at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave., Gilroy, under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.

The family asks that any contributions be made at Wells Fargo Bank, Alifonso M. Orosco Trust Fund account # 2001118831.

Hilda Vargas

Hilda Vargas died Sept. 16, 2003, in San Jose.

Hilda retired in 1978 from Monarch Match and was a member of the Portuguese Historical Society at Kelly Park and St. Catherine’s Church in Morgan Hill.

Hilda was the wife of the late John E. Vargas Sr.; mother of the late John Vargas Jr.; grandmother of John E. Vargas III and Renee Vargas; great-grandmother of Mary E. Vargas and Matthew D. Espinoza; great-great-grandmother of Alyssia L. and Kristen E. Lupina; and sister of Delinda Saunders.

Vigil will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m., at the Mission Chapel of San Jose Rancadore & Alameda Funeral Home, 600 S. Second St.

Family and friends may gather Thursday, Sept. 25, at 8:30 a.m. at the Mission Chapel and accompany the family to Five Wounds Portuguese National Church for a 9:30 a.m. Funeral Mass. Internment will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Josephine (Mercado) Perez

Josephine (Mercado) Perez, 66, died peacefully from a brief and sudden illness surrounded by her family Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at Saint Louise Hospital.

She was a native of Santa Maria. Mrs. Perez moved to Gilroy with her parents and has been a resident there ever since. She worked for many years at various canneries.

She is survived by her children Louie Cortez of San Diego, Linda Cortez, Margaret Walling, Christopher Walling and Jesse Perez, all of Gilroy; grandchildren Isaiah Amaya, Anissa Amaya, Joseph Franco and Nathan Acosta, all of Gilroy, Kristina and Carissa Cortez, both of San Diego; great-grandchildren Alyssa Cortez, of San Diego and Brandon Castillo, of Gilroy; sisters Raquel Mercado and Dolores Mercado, both of Gilroy, Rosemary Garcia of Morgan Hill, Irene Pattison of Pahrump, Nev., Ascension Charvez of Port Orchard, Wash.; brothers Solomon Mercado of Gilroy and Fidel Mercado Jr. of Santa Cruz; brothers-in-law Jim Pattison of Pahrump, Carlos Charvez of Port Orchard, and the late Donald Garcia; sisters-in-law Polly Mercado of Gilroy and Paula Mercado of Santa Cruz; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved son Frank Nathan Walling; parents Fidel and Maria Mercado; and son-in-law Delfino Garcia of Gilroy.

She will be missed by her family and her friends

A memorial service was Wednesday, Sept. 17, at New Hope Community Church in Gilroy under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

Ramona Ellen Woodall

Ramona Ellen Woodall, 42, of Morgan Hill, died Sept. 15, 2003.

Graveside service was at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 19, at Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose.

Carmen L. Hernandez

Carmen L. Hernandez died Sept. 17, 2003, in Gilroy.

Carmen was born in Santa Ana 69 years ago. She was a resident of Walla Walla for the past 26 years, prior to that time, she was a Gilroy resident. Mrs. Hernandez was a nurses’ aide at the Walla Walla Medical Clinic. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, sewing, reading, her dogs and parrots, and helping others, particularly the homeless. She was a member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West.

She is survived by her husband, Alfonso Hernandez of Walla Walla, Wash.; daughter and her husband Abby and Sam Martinez of Morgan Hill; grandchildren Joseph and Poppy Gonzales of Walla Walla, Christopher and Cori Gonzales of Moscow, Idaho, Natalie R. Martinez of Morgan Hill, Sabrina K. Martinez of Morgan Hill, Courtney E. Martinez of Morgan Hill, Samuel R. Martinez of Morgan Hill and Gary B. Martinez of Morgan Hill; great-grandchildren Gabe, Mariah and Jesse Gonzales, all of Moscow; brothers and sisters Rosie Valdivia of Gilroy, Mary Lou O’Neil of Pomona, Mary Ellen Rivas of Tri Cities, Wash., Grace Mendoza of Olympia, Wash., and Porfidio Rubacaba of Modesto; and many nieces and nephews including Mary Ann Castro of Hollister.

Mrs. Hernandez was preceded in death by her mother Marina Galvan; father Abraham Lopez; sister Vera Scholl; and brothers Ernie Lopez, Abraham Lopez and Robert Lopez.

Evening Service will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at Habing Family Funeral Home.

Services were this morning, Sept. 23, at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy. Burial was at Mount Hope Cemetery.
