Elizabeth Mosunic

Elizabeth Mosunic died Dec. 14, 2003, in Morgan Hill.

Mosunic was born Nov. 19, 1907, in Yugoslavia. She was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church since 1936. Her children fondly remember how much she enjoyed blossoming plants recalling her longtime membership in the Flower Lover's Club. Elizabeth will be greatly missed by all those who loved her dearly.

Elizabeth is survived by her sons Frank (Issie) and John (Taffy) Mosunic; daughters Kay Larkin and Ann (Oliver) Lua; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday, Dec. 17, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church. Entombment was at Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose.

Frances Noto

Frances Noto died Dec. 17, 2003, in San Jose.

She was born Aug. 28, 1912. Frances was a longtime resident of Morgan Hill as well as being a lifetime resident of Santa Clara County. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.

She is survived by daughters: Angie (Jack) Whitson, Pauline (Robert) Levin and Joie (Donald) Cowell; grandchildren Gregory (Ruth) Whitson, Jeffrey Whitson and helpmate Attoie Ala Lie, Terri (David) Opell, David (Sophia) Levin, Andrew Noto, Christopher (Tracy) Cowell, Timothy Cowell; and great-grandchildren Jaclyn Whitson, Aaron Opell and Marley Opell.

Frances was preceeded in death by both her loving and devoted husband Joseph Noto and her dear child Sal Noto.

Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at  Johnson Funeral Home with a Rosary Service at 11 a.m. A graveside service will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Gilroy.

Jack Mason Settle

Jack Mason Settle, died Nov. 20, 2003, in Auburn.

He was born April 3, 1921, at Kansas City Memorial Hospital, Mo.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Root Settle, of Rocklin; son Danny Settle and daughter-in-law Paula Settle of Morgan Hill; daughter Tracy Ann Wright and her husband Larry Wright of Sacramento; grandchildren Alicia Settle, Blaine Settle and his wife Charla Settle of San Jose and Carly Flores Settle and Blair Flores Settle of Chicago, Ill. He also is survived by great-grandchildren Rick Mason Settle and Madelyn Marie Settle of San Jose.

He will be buried in Grass Valley.

Carmen C. Soza

Carmen C. Soza died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at the age of 81 years.

She was born in San Antonio,  Texas, and lived in San Benito County since 1985, coming to Hollister from Gilroy. She had lived in Gilroy and San Martin for many years. In Hollister, she was member of Sacred Heart Church.

She is survived by her children Juan Soza of Gilroy, Ezequiel Soza Jr. of San Jose, Dina Zamarron of Hollister, Joe Soza of Gilroy, Phil Soza of Roseville, Raul Soza of Hollister, Elias Soza of Stockton, Mary Armendariz of Stockton, Olivia Mendiola of San Jose, Al Soza of Chicago, Ill., Gilbert Soza of Hollister, Lidia Compton of Hollister and Art Soza of Hollister; sisters and brother Maria Barrios of San Jose, Jose Castaneda of Del Rio,  Texas, and Tomasa Govea of Del Rio; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Soza is preceded in death by her husband, Ezequiel who died in 1995.

Friends may pay their respects on Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m., at The Black Sander Funeral Home, 363 7th St., Hollister . Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral Mass was this morning, Dec. 19, at Sacred Heart Church in Hollister. Interment and graveside services were at the IOOF Cemetery.

The family asks that any donations be made to St. Benedict’s Church or Hazel Hawkins Hospital.

Services were under the direction of Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home.

Arthur Jarvis

Arthur Jarvis of Gilroy died Dec. 20, 2003.

He enjoyed bowling and was a fan of baseball, basketball and football. He played golf and loved to play poker.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen Jarvis; children Tim Jarvis, Celeste Watson, Art Jarvis; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today, Dec. 23, at  Johnson Funeral Home with a memorial service to follow at 7 p.m.

Bartola Acosta

Bartola Acosta died Dec. 21, 2003, in Gilroy.

She was a devoted Jehovah's Witness for 47 years.

She was the beloved wife of 60 years to Miguel Acosta; loving mother of Natalie Acosta, Juanita Naranjo, Cesar Acosta, Anna Cruz, Sara Acosta, Abraham Acosta and Zeke Acosta; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and other family members and friends.

Funeral services will begin 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 8530 Forest St., Gilroy. Burial to follow at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park.

Arrangements were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

Audrey Mae Miller

Audrey Mae Miller of Morgan Hill died Dec. 18, 2003, in San Jose.

She enjoyed reading and Nascar racing.

She is survived by her children Robert (Dianne) Dodson of Maryland, Martin (Sheryl) Miller of Georgia, Steven Miller of San Jose, and Susan (Joseph) Parr of Morgan Hill; grandchildren Sandra Dodson of Maryland, Michelle Padgett and Deborah Abbott of Georgia, Jennifer Miller Ramirez of Granada Hills, Steven Miller of Colorado and Paul Martin Parr of Morgan Hill; and great-grandchildren Jason and Jake Padgett of Georgia, Drew and Trevor Abbott of Georgia and Ethan Cole Ramirez of Granda Hills.

No services will be held.

Arrangements were handled by  Johnson Funeral Home.

Earl Samuel Rice

Earl Samuel Rice, 83, died on Dec. 17, 2003, surrounded by family at Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City.

Earl was born April 14, 1920 in Ulster, Penn., to Earl M. and Viola Issacs Rice. He lived in Ulster until he joined the Army during World War II, serving in England and France. He returned to  Pennsylvania after being discharged from the Army, and married Esther Allen from their hometown of Ulster. He earned a BS in education from Millersville College, Penn., and a master of education at  Pennsylvania State University. After teaching industrial arts for six years at Dalmatia and East Smithfield, Penn., he and his family moved to California in 1957 where he taught industrial arts for 26 years in Salinas and Morgan Hill schools.

After retiring in 1984, he continued to use his woodworking skills on special projects for his church, friends and family.

Earl was a very active member of the Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church for 45 years. He loved to read and learn about a wide variety of subjects. In recent years he wrote stories of his youth and Army experiences. He also researched and wrote historical essays about WWII. After suffering a stroke several years ago, he joined the Garlicky Group of Poets where he regularly participated in poetry readings to restore his speech.

Earl remained very active through water aerobics and walking. As a WWII veteran, Earl participated in many veteran’s functions including the annual Veteran’s Day observance in Morgan Hill. He was proud to be able to fit into his Army uniform.

Earl is survived by his wife, Esther; son Arthur and daughter-in-law June, grandchildren Ariel and Micah, all of Morgan Hill; son David Rice of Rocky Point, Oregon; daughter Patricia and son-in-law Mark Buettner of Klamath Falls, Oregon; relatives living around his birthplace in rural  Pennsylvania including his sister Virginia Budman, sister Janice and brother-in-law Harold Kintner, brother Eugene, sister Sue and brother-in-law Dean Horning; Aunt Ellen Hodgson of Vestal, N.Y.; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Earl proudly served his country, raised a family, taught thousands of students, continued to read and write his entire life, and was active in his church. He was an inspiration to his family and friends.

Memorial services will be held at Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to Ulster Village Presbyterian Church, Ulster, PA 18850, where Earl and Esther were married, children baptised, and the entire family attended and supported.
