Anna Ozella Burkett

Anna Ozella Burkett, 91, of Gilroy, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Burkett and a son Eddie Burkett. She is survived by daughter Mary Barger; brother Bill Paten; sister Dorothy Severson; grandchildren Daniel Barger and Tiffany DeSantis; and great-grandchildren Tristan Barger and  Taylor Buckelew.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. at  Johnson Funeral Home. Additional services will be held later in Mexico, Mo., with interment to follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Mexico, Mo.

In lieu of flowers, the family that any donations be made to a favorite charity.

Francisca Hernandez

Francisca Hernandez died Dec. 24, 2003, at the age of 74 years.

Hernandez was a long-time resident of the Morgan Hill and Gilroy area.

She was the beloved wife of Eduardo Hernandez and the loving mother of Maria de Jesus, Teodulo, Celia, Rosa, Humberto, Francisca Jr. and Eduardo Jr. She also is survived by brothers Teodoro, Lucio and Donaciano; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass was Wednesday at Most Holy Trinity Church, followed by a graveside ceremony at Oak Hill Memorial Park in San Jose.

Alfonso G. Cordova

Alfonso Galindo Cordova of Morgan Hill died Dec. 29, 2003. He was 81.

Mr. Cordova was born in Los Angeles on Jan. 11, 1922. He was a retired ironworker of 45 years and a member of the Ironworkers Union Local #377. He was a veteran of WW II, serving in the US Army in Europe and North Africa, a member of the American Legion Post #444 and St. Catherine's Catholic Church.

Alfonso was the cherished father of Louie and his wife Mona, Nancy, John and his wife Margaret, David and his wife Lolly and Frank; grandfather of Sandra, Nooney, Michael, Michelle, Julian, Davine, Rita, Lil' Louie, Dario, Francesca, Randy, Rhonda, Ronni and Kody; great grandfather to Dario Jesse, Jasmine, Julian, Madeline, Nicholas, Michael, Sebastian, JR, and Anthony. He also is survived by brothers Jose, Jesus and Gustavo Cordova; and sisters Georgina Miranda and Mary Saenz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora V. Cordova; son-in-law Dario Sr.; and grandchildren James, Steven David, Nathaniel, Danielle and Robert.

Vigil Services will be at 7 tonight, Jan. 2, at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy. Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home followed by Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine's Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Gilroy.

Robert Glenn Purvis

Robert “Rob” Glenn Purvis, 39, died Dec. 9, 2002, in Morgan Hill. Born on Nov. 29, 1963 in San Diego, Purvis was the director of Student Services with the Morgan Hill School District.

He is survived by his loving wife, Denise, also of Morgan Hill; adored daughters Emily and Erin; father Robert William Purvis; and sisters Barbara Perkins and Beth Morrison.

Rob joined the MHSD in March 1999 and, within four months, was commended for the positive impression he had made on all segments of the school community.

In addition to his extraordinary knowledge of the complexities surrounding special education legislation and children with special needs, Rob devoted considerable energy to programs including safe schools, bilingual education, migrant education, child welfare, child development and health services.

He coordinated and hosted the community-wide workshop on “hate crimes” bringing community agencies and students and parents into a meaningful dialog about the need to honor diversity in the Morgan Hill community.

Rob facilitated the process that led to new safe school plans in the school community. His willingness to create and participate in work group activities like his annual “Salsa” contest led to important team building among the staff that he supervised.

Rob is held in the highest esteem by his colleagues. It is his endless energy, his accessibility and support, his leadership and his contagious sense of humor and positive outlook that will be missed by the employees and students in the district.

Superintendent Carolyn McKennan, at Monday’s school board meeting, spoke of Purvis’ death and how much he would be missed. The audience of parents, citizens, district staff and trustees then observed a moment of silence on his behalf.

A Memorial Mass will be held Monday, Dec. 16, at 3:30 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. The service will be followed by a reception in the Milani Center on the church grounds.

An educational account for Rob’s elementary school-aged children has been established through South Valley National Bank, 500 Tennant Station, Morgan Hill 95037. Checks may also be sent directly to the Human Resources Dept. of MHSD, 15600 Concord Circle, Morgan Hill 95037, brought to the attention of Denise Tate.

Arrangements are being handled by the  Johnson Funeral Home.

Frederick F. Lombardi

Frederick F. Lombardi of Morgan Hill died Dec. 8 in Gilroy.

Mr. Lombardi was a restaurant owner, member of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Advisory Group, Paul Harris Fellow, member of the American Legion Post 1000, former member of Morgan Hill Rotary Club, past president of Police Athletic League (1977-80) past director of Live Oak Foundation and founding member of Morgan Hill Law Enforcement Foundation.

He was a member of the USAF during the Berlin Airlift 1948-49 and during the Korean Conflict, 1951-54.

Mr. Lombardi retired from Burger King Corp. as its first director of operations. He developed and implemented the “Adopt a School” program in 1980. This was presented to the Presidential Commission at the  White House in 1981; this program was utilized throughout the country.

Upon his retirement he continued his career as a private businessman. He operated two Burger King restaurants, six Carls Jr’s restaurants and Old City Hall Restaurant in Gilroy (1985-1987) which became a victim of the 1989 earthquake.

Mr. Lombardi with urging of then mayor Lorraine Barke organized and promoted the Teddy Bear program with Morgan Hill Police Department so that whenever a child was in a traumatic situation a policeman always had a teddy bear for that child. The program was so successful that donations came from England, Australia and around the country and was covered by all the local networks along with CNN. In May of 1984, Mayor Barke presented him with a proclamation for his efforts and support of the “Teddy Bear” program.

Mr. Lombardi is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joan. He was father and friend to three children and PopPop to five grandchildren, Frederick J., spouse Leslie and granddaughters Ashleigh, Jenna and Brittni of Gonzales; Anthony D., spouse Susie and granddaughter Alexandra of Gonzales; Angela Matz and grandson Anthony Matz of Morgan Hill.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Catherine Church in Morgan Hill on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m.

Arrangements were under the direction of  Johnson Funeral Home.

Alice J. Clark

Alice J. Clark died Dec. 10, 2002, in Gilroy after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Gilroy on April 8, 1921, and has been a Gilroy resident her whole life. She was a school teacher for the Morgan Hill School District for more than 30 years until retirement in 1984. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Order of Eastern Star Magnolia Chapter.

She is survived by her brother John J. and wife Betty Clark of Davis; sister Cornelia Lovejoy of Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister Dr. Mary Clark.

Graveside services were today, Dec. 13, at St. Mary Cemetery, Gilroy.

Arrangements were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

The family asks that any donations be made to a favorite charity.
