Johnny S. Sanchez

Johnny S. Sanchez Sr., 65, died on Dec. 15, 2002, at his home in San Jose.

A native of  Texas, Sanchez worked as a material supervisor at Dual Systems, San Jose. He was an Army veteran.

He was the loving husband of Irene Sanchez of San Jose; father of Angie DeLuna of Morgan Hill and Johnny S. Sanchez Jr. of San Jose; and grandfather of Maya Sanchez and Malyn Sanchez both of San Jose. Sanchez is also survived by two sisters and one brother.

Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18 at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

Burial was Thursday, Dec. 19, at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gilroy. Services were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

Mavis Eglinton

Mavis Eglinton died Dec. 15, 2002, in Fontana while visiting her children and grandchildren for the holidays.

She was born Sept. 1, 1946, in Inglewood, and lived in Southern California until she moved to Gilroy in 1993. She loved Gilroy; the quieter life style agreed with her.

Mavis worked as a customer service representative at Cidco until it closed, and more recently with ElephantBooks.com. She was a lover of animals, particularly cats and dogs; she groomed them professionally, and as a favor to special friends. Mavis was also a tremendous sports fan, being an original Oakland Raiders fan.

She was the beloved wife of Richard “Dick” Eglinton of Gilroy; mother of Nicholas Eglinton and fiancé Stacy Flores both of Fontana, Tyson and wife Linda Eglinton of Broken Arrow, Okla., Leslie and husband Eddie Porche of Fontana; grandmother of Jacob Andrew Eglinton, Spencer, Halley and Dever John Eglinton, Natalie Sue and Parker Edward Porche; sister of Ross Worboys of Redwood City; stepdaughter of Barbara Worboys of Trenton, Mich.; aunt of Christina and husband Chuck Wooten of Livermore and Lisa and husband John Harper of Sunol.

She is also survived by many other family members and close friends.

The family asks that any donations be made to Santa Cruz Hospice Caring Project or Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center (WERC) https://www.werc-ca.org/ of Morgan Hill.

Funeral services were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

Roldolfo Z. Flores

Rodolfo Zapata Flores, age 64, died Feb. 10, 2004 in San Jose.

A native of  Texas, he was a retired mechanic who will be greatly missed by his family and friends who remember him as a very special person who always had time for a chat and a joke. He was kind and gentle, loyal and wise and a very hard working man who loved crafting jewelry and browsing at the flea markets and garage sales.

He was the loving husband of Rosie O. Flores of Morgan Hill, beloved father of Rudy Flores of Morgan Hill and Cindy Polanco of San Jose, and father-in-law to David of San Jose. He was the grandfather of Lisa Flores, Iasha and Briana Saldivar of Morgan Hill, Carissa, Daniel and Nathan Polanco of San Jose, and Ruby Flores III of San Jose.

He was the great-grandfather of David Anthony Rivera and Elijah Fox Caswell of Morgan Hill. He also leaves sisters, Gloria and Diana Flores of Crystal City,  Texas, and brothers, Juan Flores of Dallas, Gilbert Flores of Richmond, Virg., and Roberto Flores of Dilley,  Texas; and a nephew JP Flores of Crystal City.

He was preceded in death by his father Larry Flores and mother Cristina Flores of Crystal City.

Friends are invited for visitation at  Johnson Funeral Home onTuesday, Feb. 17, from 3-6 p.m. Vigil Service will be at 6 p.m. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at St. Catherine Church.

Interment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose.

William Bettencourt

Gilroy native William “Bill” Bettencourt died after congestive heart failure on Friday, Feb. 20, at Saint Louise Hospital, Gilroy. He was 92 years old.

Bill was born and raised in Gilroy. He worked on his family dairy as a young man. He was an Army veteran of World War II as a master tech sergeant serving in Buchenwald, Germany, and Normandy, France, in the 279 Engineers. He married his late wife, Dell, in 1946 in Reno, Nev. He owned and operated Bettencourt Bros. dairy with his brother, A.V. for five years in Los Banos. He moved to Gilroy working at BeGe Manufacturing. He then worked for Toscano Ford in Los Banos as a mechanic before working at Western Tile, Gilroy, until retiring in 1965. He was a charter and life-long member of the VFW and the American Legion, both in Gilroy, member of Native Sons of the Golden West, past Gilroy Elks, I.F.D.E.S., Our Lady of Fatima and the ECV “Clampers.”

He was the loving husband of the late Dell Bettencourt; loving father of Patti Bettencourt of Gilroy; son of the late Joseph and Marian Bettencourt; brother of A.V. Bettencourt and his wife Fritz of Los Banos, Mina Slentz and her husband Harold of Hayward, Josephine Palage and her late husband Nick of Grants Pass, Ore., Karl Bettencourt and his wife Eileen of Roseville, and the late Manuel J. Bettencourt, Joe V. Bettencourt, Marion Fewel and John Bettencourt; loving stepfather of Shirley Brem and her husband Dick of Madera; loving stepgrandfather of Mike Brem and his wife Tina of Turlock, Nancy Lomanto and her husband Nick of Hollister, Jim Brem and his wife Pam of Strathmore; loving stepgreat-grandfather of Jason Brem, Jeff Brem, Jeff Brem, Ryan Bergamini, Kyle Brem and Tyson Brem; godfather of Steve Lemos of Belmont, Sandee Senior of Bakersfield and Carol Lynn Barcellos of San Jose; and brother-in-law of Carroll K. Hurd of Gilroy and Marge Monteiro of Salinas. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Vigil Service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy. Services will begin Thursday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home followed by Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church. Entombment will follow at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.

Rosemary M. Bovich

Rosemary M. Bovich, 82, of Gilroy, died Feb. 23, 2004, after a lengthy illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years,Theodore Bovich.

She is survived by her daughter Rosemarie and her husband Al Vogel, grandchildren Kathy Rogers and David Vogel, and four great granddaughters, all of Gilroy.

Private services have been held.

The family asks that any donations be made to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 1232 22nd Street NW,  Washington, DC, 20037-1292.

Arrangements were by Habing Family Funeral Home.

Amira Tozy

Amira Tozy, 72, died at home Monday, Feb. 9, 2004 after a lengthy illness.

She was the beloved sister of Ameer Tozy of Morgan Hill and his wife, Gail; aunt of Dina Marine of Morgan Hill and her husband, Ray, Samia “Sam” Reichel of Hollister and her husband, Michael, and Lisa Evans of Hollister and her husband, Kenny; greataunt of Matthew and Kelly Marine of Morgan Hill, Nicolle and Sara Reichel of Hollister, Tyler and Ryan Evans of Hollister. She also is survived by many relatives in Iraq, Canada, Jordan and Sweden.

Visitation takes place Thursday, Feb. 12, 4-8 p.m., at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy. Funeral Mass was at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 13, at St. Catherine’s Church. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 900 1st St., Gilroy.

The family asks that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Bruce Jacobs

Bruce Jacobs, longtime Gilroy city attorney, died in his home Sunday afternoon following a lengthy illness. He was 77 years old.

Jacobs moved to Gilroy in 1953, opening a law practice that still bears his name. The man remembered for his sharp legal mind served as city attorney for 23 years, from 1968 until 1991, was instrumental in founding Gavilan College and helped drafted the city charter, adopted in 1960.

Jacobs was born in Oakland and grew up in San Jose, receiving his bachelor’s degree from University of California at Berkeley.

Following a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy during and after World War II, he received his law degree from University of San Francisco.

Jacobs boasted a long list of roles in the Gilroy community, including president of the Chamber of Commerce, member of the Planning Commission and trustee of the Gilroy Elementary School District. Jacobs was a Rotary member since 1954, serving two terms as president, and a member of Gilroy Elks Club since 1958. He was part of the citizens committee that drafted the Gilroy City Charter, adopted in 1960.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jane; his brother, Ross Jacobs, of Saint Helena; children Tracy Jacobs of San Jose, Brian Jacobs of Saint Helena and Nancy Fleming of Portland, Oregon; and granddaughters, Alexandria and Sydney of Saint Helena.

The family asks that any donations be made to a favorite charity.

A memorial service took place Thursday at Gilroy Presbyterian Church.
