Kathleen Alice Williams
Kathleen Alice Williams of Morgan Hill died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at San Jose Medical Center.
Born March 10, 1924, to Arthur Vincent and Marguerite Carroll Regan in Dayton, Ohio, she was the sixth of seven children. Moving with her family to South Bend, Ind., Kathleen graduated from Riley High School. She attended Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich., prior to serving as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After the war, Kathleen married Richard and relocated to Columbus, Ohio, where she pursued many interests including antique shop owner, Realtor and co-owner of the family Howard Johnson’s Restaurant on N. High Street. After retiring to St. Petersburg, Fla., Kathleen and her husband enjoyed 12 years together prior to Richard’s death in 1995.
Kathleen will be remembered for her unfailing devotion to her husband and children, her Gaelic charm and wit, unwavering perseverance and unbridled optimism. Kathleen had a flair for art and design.
She pursued her artistic passion through painting by completing many fine works that she displayed both in Florida and in California. Kathleen moved to Morgan Hill in 1999 to be near her daughter. Most recently, she lived at Valley Pines Senior Assisted Living.
She is survived by sisters Carroll Fisher of Indianapolis, Ind., and Patricia Schultheis of South Bend, Ind.; children Julie K. Zintsmaster of Morgan Hill, John S. Williams of Kohler, Wisc., Mary Anne Sibley-Murphy of Union Lake, Mich., Michael J. Williams of Columbus, Ohio, and Patricia J. Huckabee of Beaufort, S.C.; sons-in-law Logan R. Zintsmaster and Gordon E. Murphy; daughters-in-law Paula J. Williams and Melanie J. Williams; 11 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her son James Regan Williams; husband of 49 years, Richard James Williams; brothers Arthur Jr. and Thomas; and sisters Mary Frances (Ruppe) and Anne (Oulahan).
The family will receive friends Friday, Dec. 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, 515 High Street, Worthington, Ohio, followed by a memorial service with the Rev. Bruce Smith officiating.
Interment alongside her husband and son will follow at Union Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio.
Harriet Madden
Artist and landscaper Harriet Madden died in her Morgan Hill home just 20 days after her 101st birthday.
Mrs. Madden was born Nov. 4, 1901 to William G. Griffith and Clara F. Hardy Griffith in Santa Barbara. She was graduated from Santa Barbara Girls’ School, attended Vassar College one year and was graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1925.
She majored in English but took all of the classes she could in landscape architecture, as well as some advanced mathematics classes in which she was one of only two women enrolled. She was a second generation member of Delta Gamma fraternity.
She pursued her love of horticulture, design and painting after her marriage to George Donald Hodgson in 1927. They lived in Salinas, then moved to Carmel, where they raised their two children. In the early years she designed and supervised the construction of a number of gardens of government and residential buildings in Salinas and Carmel.
She was divorced in 1947. Five years later she married Thomas Chester Madden. They lived in Carmel Valley, Palo Alto and Santa Cruz before retiring to Morgan Hill. During the Maddens’ 48 years of marriage, they enjoyed their extended family and travel. Cruises and motor trips to Southern California, the Southwest and Mexico visiting friends and family provided them much joy.
With an eye for the scenes she might wish to paint later, Mrs. Madden always carried a camera with her. She continued her painting into her 90s. And, always, wherever she lived, her first priority was a beautiful garden.
The family wishes to thank Molini Hoko for her loving care of Mrs. Madden for the past year and a half.
She is survived by her daughter Ann Hodgson Clarke of Mill Valley; stepdaughters Eugenie M. Watson of Los Altos and Meredith M. Moore (and her husband T. Charles Moore) of Sunnyvale; daughter-in-law Carol W. Hodgson of Pebble Beach; grandchildren William H. Clarke, Robert A. Clarke, Christian M. Clarke, Susan K. Clarke, Phillip W. Hodgson, Donald S. Hodgson; stepgrandchild Eugenie Ann Moore; 11 great grandchildren; and one stepgreat grandchild.
Mrs. Madden was preceded in death by her son William G. Hodgson in 1987; and by her husband Thomas Chester Madden in 2000.
A memorial service was held Dec. 14 at the San Martin Presbyterian Church in San Martin. Remembrances may be sent to the church or a charity of your choice.
Joseph A. Romeo
Joseph A. Romeo died Dec. 15, 2002. He was 67 years old.
Joe was born in 1935 in Brooklyn, NY. He was a musician by desire, a firefighter by trade and passionate about both. He retired from the Gilroy Fire Department 12 years ago as captain. Joe was a hero to many, loved by all and will be greatly missed.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Sarah Romeo; children Joseph Romeo, Barbara Sunseri and Beverley Cusimano; grandchildren Ashley Romeo, Andrew Romeo, Gary LeDeit, Lonnie Sunseri; and great-grandchildren Amber LeDeit, Jenessa LeDeit and April LeDeit. He was the brother of Jean Emfinger and family and John Romeo and family; and friend of many.
A memorial service took place Friday, Dec. 20, at Oak Hill’s Funeral Home, Chapel of Roses, 300 Curtner Ave., San Jose.
Marcos A. Medina
Marcos A. Medina died Dec. 18, 2002, in Merced following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Medina was born in Nayarit, Mexico, on Feb. 29, 1952. Mr. Medina was a 27-year resident of Morgan Hill. He was a certified mechanic for Monterey Mushrooms in Morgan Hill for 25 years and a member of the UFW Union. He enjoyed spending his free time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Christina Lopez-Medina of Los Banos; son Marcos Lopez-Medina; daughter and her husband Maria and Jaime Medina Colin of Morgan Hill; daughter Veronica Medina and her fiancé Elias Vizcarra of Morgan Hill; son Ricardo Medina of Morgan Hill and Melisa Medina of Morgan Hill; mother Maria Rodirguez Conchas of Mexicalli, Baja California.; grandchildren Daniel A. Medina-Vizcarra, Daisy Marie Colin, and Jaime Colin, Jr. all of Morgan Hill. He is also survived by the Caudillo, Esquivel, Villa, and Martinez Families.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at Habing Family Funeral Home. A Procession to St. Mary's Church will begin on Friday from the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. and then proceed to St. Mary's Church for a Funeral Mass at 2 p.m.
Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Gilroy.
Margaret R. Hoffman
Margaret Rose “Petricca” Hoffman died Thursday, Feb. 12, after a three-year valiant battle against colon cancer during which she displayed such courage, patience and tenacity that, together with her angelic heart and boundless love, made her a hero in the hearts of those who loved her.
She was the loving wife and friend of 31 years to Ronald Hoffman to whom she gave her life, love and companionship; “Mother Dearest, Sweet, Kind, Generous” to her beautiful daughters Theresa Shellen and husband Taylor Shellen, of San Jose, “Peggy” Perroud and husband Joao Perroud, of San Diego, and “Katie” Rose Hoffman, of Morgan Hill; “Gran” to her “Too Sweet” grandchildren, Jack and Luke Shellen, and Thomas and “Bella” Perroud; wonderful daughter and stepdaughter to Patricia and “Hal” O’Toole, of Santa Clara; loving daughter to Patrick Petricca, of San Jose; cherished and deeply loved sister of Maria Petricca, of Santa Clara, Patricia Hoffman, of San Jose, John Petricca, of Las Vegas, “Joe” Petricca of Eureka, Kathleen Knudsen of Morgan Hill and Joanne Petricca of Morgan Hill; endeared and lovingly remembered by nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends far too numerous to individually name. All will miss her.
Vigil Service was Monday at Habing Family Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was today, Feb. 17, at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Morgan Hill followed by interment at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, Santa Clara. A reception followed.
Teresa Alfonso
Teresa Alfonso, 86, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at her home after a long illness.
A native of Salamanca, Spain, Mrs. Alfonso moved to Gilroy in 1972 from Spain. She was a past member of St. Mary Church.
Teresa was the loving wife of 57 years to Constantino Alfonso of Gilroy; loving mother of Teresa Lopez, Jose Alfonso, and Hortensia Ariza all of Gilroy; dear grandmother of Victor Lopez, Yolanda Ariza-Escobar, Carlos Andres Ariza and Ivan Ariza all of Gilroy; and great-grandmother of Gabriel Lopez, Miranda Lauren Escobar, Xochilt Victoria Lopez and Nicholas Alexander Escobar all of Gilroy. She also is survived by many relatives in Spain.
Funeral Mass was held this afternoon, Feb. 17, at St. Mary Church under direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.
Mildred Anna D. Roe
Mildred Anna Dodge Roe died Feb. 10, 2004, in Baker, Oregon, at the age of 90.
Raised in the Dakotas, Mildred moved with her family to La Grande and graduated from high school before returning to the Dakotas to marry Clarence Leroy “Kelly” Roe on Oct. 4, 1932.
Clarence was the son of Luella Tanner Roe and Raymond Oscar Roe. Both families were longtime residents of La Grande. Mildred was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and worked as a nurse’s aide until retiring in 1978. Her husband preceded her in death in 1990 in Hornbrook, California, where they had been living for a time.
Mildred was involved in many service organizations, liked to travel, loved to bake and cook and grow flowers. She was very artistic and crocheted, sewed and created many beautiful memories to her family with her talents and her beautiful garden.
Mildred and Kelly were parents to four sons and their wives, Donald and Delores Roe of Prospect, Oregon, Dewayne and Carol Roe of John Day, Oregon, Joe Roe of LaPine, Oregon, Kelly Ray Roe of Rohnert Park. Their daughter, Phyllis, died at the age of 8 while the family lived in La Grande. She also is survived by 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. A great-great-grandchild will be born in May or June. She also leaves many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Mildred was born to parents Anna Jensen Dodge and Levi Dodge in Reeder, N.D. She had two brothers Motier Dodge and Al Dodge and two sisters, Elsa Hammond Boyer and Loraine Dodge Witheral, who all preceded her in death.
Graveside service was today, Feb. 17, at the Hillcrest Cemetery
under the direction of Daniels Chapel of the Valley.
