Silverio “Silver” Perez

Silverio “Silver” Perez died as a result of an automobile accident Friday, March 5, 2004.

Born in Gilroy, Silverio moved with his family to Fresno during his early high school days. He graduated from C.L. McLane High School in Fresno. He returned to Gilroy in 1997 and last worked for New United Motor Manufacturing in Fremont since 2001. A native of Gilroy, he was 29.

He was the loving son of Silverio F. Perez of Gilroy and Isabel Gonzalez-Diaz of Gilroy; boyfriend of Elaine Gaeta of San Jose; brother of Veronica Perez and her husband Virgil Huston of Fresno, Daniel Perez of Fresno, Lorraine Perez and her husband Joseph La Rocca of Fresno and Diana Perez of Gilroy; grandson of Ignacio Macias of Porterville, Abel A. Castro of Gilroy and the late Pauline Gonzalez, Melida P. Castro and Eustacio G. Perez; uncle of Isaiah, Elijah, Reyna, Destiny, Larissa and Jolissa. He also is survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Burial was at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

Grace King

Grace King died at home in Santa Clara on March 5, 2004.

Born in San Jose on March 12, 1909, to David and Marie Long, Grace attended San Jose schools and graduated with a teaching credential from San Jose State. She also took advanced classes at San Francisco State and Chico State over the years.

After graduating, Grace ventured to Weed in Syskiyou County where teachers were in great demand in 1930. There she taught elementary and high school, later teaching junior high classes at College of the Syskyous.

In Weed, Grace met her future husband, Otis Smith, who was in the furniture business. They retired to Rossmore (Contra Costa County) in 1965, where she continued an active schedule, teaching jewelry and art classes. After Mr. Smith's death, Grace moved to Gilroy to be near her aunt and uncle, Gerry and Justin Byers. In 1972, Grace married William King, who died in 1985.

Grace loved gardening, sewing, art and going to the casinos, but her true passion was bridge. Grace would drive to tournaments all over the Bay Area to earn master points. She was a member of numerous bridge clubs in Gilroy and hosted many bridge parties at her Princevalle Street home.

Grace also loved to travel, especially by cruise ship. She traveled the world With her aunt and uncle during her marriages, and took many trips to South America and even more to China and Hong Kong. Grace's collection of Asian art and furniture was admired by all who entered her home.

Grace was a true lady, loved and respected by all who knew her

Grace was a member of the California Teachers Association, CLAS, St. Mary's Church and Delta Kappa Gamma sorority.

She will be missed by her niece Joan Gyda of Maryland; stepson Charles King of San Jose; and stepdaughter Gail Ronald of Petaluma. She will also be missed by many friends in Gilroy and Santa Clara.

Grace was preceded in death by her brother, Oswald “Bud” Long.

Burial was private. A memorial mass will be held in St. Mary's Chapel, Gilroy on Monday, March 15, at 1 a.m. Arrangements were made by Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to Gilroy Assistance League, the Lord's Table or the Gilroy Foundation.

Lloyd Edmund Mader

Lloyd Edmund Mader died Feb. 23, 2004, at the age of 87 in Fresno, after a lengthy bout with pneumonia.

Lloyd was born in Oshkosh, Wis., on July 4, 1916. His mother, Frances Goins, raised Lloyd and his three sisters during hard times. Moving to California in the 1930s, he began working a variety of jobs, including motorcycle courier and horse trainer. He married Mae Monter in 1944 and became the father of two sons.

Lloyd began working for Dorrington (Dorin) Manufacturing Co. in the San Fernando Valley in about 1950. He worked his way up to electrical engineer and then in 1968, moved to Gilroy as a sales representative.

His wife, Mae, worked as a secretary at Nordstrom School in Morgan Hill until her death in 1974. Lloyd continued working, raising and breeding horses at his “Red Spur Ranch” until his retirement and moving to Coarsegold in 1987. He spent the next 17 years living in the foothills between Fresno and Yosemite near family, friends and traveling.

Known as “the Old Cowboy,” he made friends wherever he was. His skills as a handyman were always in demand, even in his 80s.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mae; and sisters Erma Hiatt and Francis. Fronk.

Surviving family members are Helen Mae Ring of Clovis; and sons Gary of Gilroy and David Mader of Scotts Valley.

A graveside service will be held St. Mary’s Cemetery in Gilroy at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13. A celebration of life will be held at his home in Indian Lakes, Coarsegold on March 20 at 1 p.m.

William “Bill” Vazquez

William “Bill” Vazquez died June 3, 2004, in San Jose at the age of 65.

He was the beloved husband of Beverly Vazquez for 38 years; loving father of five; grandfather of seven; and brother of two.

Funeral services took place June 7 at Cathedral of Faith, San Jose, under the direction of Oak Hill Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers donations will be accepted by the family.

Emmett W. Smith Sr.

Emmett W. Smith Sr. died July 26, 2004, in Gilroy. He was born 78 years ago in Drew County, Ark.

Mr. Smith was a Morgan Hill resident since 1959 and was a masonry contractor who generously donated his time and skills to various projects throughout the community.

Emmett was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II and was stationed on the Air Force repair ship Brigadier General Alfred J. Lyon as a high-speed radio operator in the South Pacific. When needed, he also served in the Thirteenth Air Force, flying missions over Borneo and Japan delivering medical supplies after the atomic bomb was dropped. He was the Past Master of the Morgan Hill Masonic Lodge, Past Grand Bible Bearer of the Grand Masonic Lodge of California, Past Patron of Manzanita Chapter OES, member of Gilroy Masonic Lodge, member Magnolia Chapter OES, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Gilroy and Sons of the American Revolution.

Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marion Smith of Morgan Hill; children Emmett W. Smith Jr. of Larkspur, Marion Kathleen Smith of Morgan Hill, Eva Susanne and her husband David Pribyl Sr. of Gilroy, and Kirsten Tindall Smith and her husband Eric Olson of Morgan Hill; grandchildren Janelle Renee, Christopher Adam, Laura Darlene, James Mitchell, David Warren and Brian Webster; great-grandson Noah Emmett; sister Ludie Mae Bradford of  Washington, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services takes place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1 at the Gilroy Masonic Lodge.

The family asks that any donations be made to the Masonic Home for Children c/o Grand Lodge of California, 1111 California St., San Francisco, CA 94108

Marzella Martinez Ruiz

Marzella Martinez Ruiz of Gilroy, died August 1 at the age of 80.

Ruiz was a member of New Life Fellowship in Hollister. She enjoyed spending time with her family, music, dancing, and watching cooking shows and “Novelas”. She will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Enrique (Henry) T. Ruiz; children Bea Gorena of Hollister and her husband Joe, Henry C. (Hank) Ruiz of Gilroy, and Gloria Ramirez of Morgan Hill and her husband Vince; grandchildren John Gorena and his wife Carol, Jacquelyn Gorena, and Jacob Gorena; great granddaughter Jade Gorena; sister Lita Garcia and her husband Pete, sister Connie Ordaz, brother Peter Martinez and his wife Dolores and many nieces, nephews and other family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and twin brothers.

As were her wishes, private services have been held.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Diabetes Association. Arrangements under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.
