At age 7, she learned to sew and crochet and made many beautiful crafts throughout the years. Opal worked as a housekeeper at Exeter Memorial Hospital for 10 years until retiring in 1972. Opal made Exeter her home and enjoyed living there. She was always busy, caring for her children or grandchildren, taking care of her yard and plants, or tending her animals, large or small. If she found a baby bird in the yard, she would take it in and feed and care for it until it could survive on its own. If a piece of a plant was broken off, she used it to start another plant. Opal loved to start with something small and watch it grow and prosper. She was a true nurturer.

She enjoyed her family and was the mainstay throughout the years. She is preceded in death by her husband, Elza; three sons, Willard, Delmar and Granvel; two grandsons, Shawn and Rodney Miller; and one granddaughter, Bev Weitzel. She is survived by her son, Harold Miller and wife, Delores, of Chadwick, Mo.; three daughters, Susan Lewis and husband, Roy, Delores Evans and husband, Bill, of Springfield, Mo., and Bonnie Cornwell of Visalia; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

The last years of Opal's life were spent at Lindsay Gardens, where she crocheted many beautiful afghans and touched many lives. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to the wonderful nurses who cared for her and made her comfortable and to her neighbor, Sue Reeves, who cared for her plants and animals at home.

Friends may call 1-4 p.m. today at Smith Family Chapel, Exeter. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Exeter District Cemetery.
