LINDSAY -- Rebecca Morales Ramirez, 79, of Lindsay died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001. She was an orange packer for various packinghouses for 42 years.
Visitation will be 1-6 p.m. Thursday and 8:30-9:30 a.m. Friday at Webb-Sanders Funeral Home, Lindsay. Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lindsay. Burial will be at Lindsay-Strathmore Cemetery.

Rita Fernandez

TULARE -- Rita Gonzalez Fernandez, 85, of Tulare died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001. She was a homemaker.
Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hamilton Peers Lorentzen Funeral Chapel, Tulare. Services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at the chapel. Interment will be at Tulare District Cemetery.

Lelia Brown

Lelia Mac Brown, 83, of Visalia died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001. She was a homemaker.
No services are planned. Arrangements are by Page Funeral Chapel, Selma.

Remembrances may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Center, 1343 N. Wishon Ave., Fresno, CA c/o Tulare County Unit 211 N. Encina St., Visalia, CA 93291.

Brenda Barringer

LINDSAY -- Brenda Carol Barringer, 57, of Lindsay died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001. She was a homemaker.
Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. Wednesday at Webb-Sanders Funeral Home, Lindsay. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Lindsay-Strathmore Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Foundation, 55 Shaw Ave., Suite 109, Clovis, CA 93612.

Margaret M. Veiga

HANFORD -- Margaret M. Veiga, 79, of Hanford died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001. She was a homemaker for 50 years.
She was best remembered for a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and cooking. Her husband, Manuel, and she traveled to Europe, all of California and Canada. She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. She attended Madera's Lincoln School for four years, St. Joaquim Catholic School for four years and graduated from Madera High School in 1940. She belonged to the Kings County Cabrillo Civic Club 9, I.S.M.M. Council 16 and Luso-American. She was a member of Delta View PTA while her children attended Delta View School.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Manuel Veiga of Hanford; son, Ed Veiga of Visalia; daughter, Sally Veiga and son-in-law, Joe Sepulveda, of Fresno; sister, Anna Deniz of Madera; and one grandchild, Genevieve Veiga Sepulveda of Fresno. She was predeceased by one brother, Manuel DaCosta, and one sister, Mary Huffman.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at  Whitehurst McNamara Funeral Chapel, Hanford. Rosary and Mass will be 2 p.m. Friday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Hanford.

Remembrances may be made to Donor's favorite charity.

Dorothy M. Waldrop

MANTECA -- Dorothy M. Waldrop, 82, of Manteca died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001. She was a homemaker.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Whitney Hotel, Lindsay. Burial will be at Lindsay-Strathmore Cemetery and will be privately attended by family at another time. Arrangements are by Webb-Sanders Funeral Home, Lindsay.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Church of The Nazarene, 200 N. Gale Hill, Lindsay, CA 93247.

Elizabeth Ann Sunderland

Elizabeth Ann Sunderland, 82, of Visalia died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2000. She was a homemaker.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Lindsay-Strathmore Cemetery. Arrangements are by Webb-Sanders Funeral Home, Lindsay.

The family suggests memorials be made to: Kaweah Delta District Hospital Parkinson Disease Treatment, 400 W. Mineral King Ave., Visalia, CA 93291.

Esther Merle Schumacher

TULARE -- Esther Merle Schumacher, 85, of Tulare died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001. She was a homemaker.
Esther Merle Callister was born Feb. 20, 1915, in Alpaugh the daughter of John and Tetro Callister, San Joaquin Valley pioneers. She passed in her sleep on the evening of Jan. 14 in Porterville.

Esther lived in Tulare for more than 70 years and contributed much to cultural development in the city. She graduated from Tulare Union High School in 1932 and stayed active in the school's evening sports programs for a number of years. She and her sister were attending a badminton event at the school when Esther met Dr. Herman "Fritz" Schumacher. They married in 1939 and were separated only during the war years. Fritz passed just nine weeks before Esther followed.

A member of the Tulare Methodist Church, Esther was very active in church programs for many years. At the end of World War II, she was among the original members of the Officer's Wives Club, which later became the Tulare Town and Country Club. She was also a founding member of the Tulare City Historical Society, helped to establish the Historical Museum and served as a volunteer worker for many years.

A lifelong reader and armchair traveler, Esther worked on the Tulare Library Board for 35 years, helping to develop the library collection and services. She was active in many other service organizations and clubs, including the Tulare PTA, Le Petit Amis and the Tulare Pallet Club. She will always be remembered as an elegant and graceful woman with a quick wit and charming laugh.

Esther is survived by two sisters, Lois Kliewer and Laverne Hillman of Tulare; daughters Christy Zimlich and Cheryl Warren of Seattle and Lisa Claus of Porterville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were Monday at Tulare District Cemetery. Arrangements were by Goble-Miller Memorial Chapel, Tulare.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be sent to the Alzheimer's Association -- www.alz.org -- or the Tulare Historical Museum.

Darrell Ryan

LINDSAY -- Darrell Ryan, 51, of Lindsay died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001. He was a substitute teacher.
Services and burial will be private. Arrangements are by Webb-Sanders Funeral Home, Lindsay.

Olive Phillips

Born in Story, Ark., to Frank and Lemmer Phillips on July 19, 1919, Olive Phillips passed away at his home in Visalia on Jan. 21 at the age of 81.
He was raised in Story and Mount Ida, Ark. He came to California, settling in the Exeter area, in 1937. He farmed just north of Exeter for most of his adult life. He married Oma Lee Dearman on Feb. 11, 1951, at the First Jesus Name Church of Cameron Creek. He worked at Delta View School in Hanford as a bus driver and retired from there. He was a member of the First Jesus Name Church of Cameron Creek, where he served as Sunday school superintendent for 50 years and had also served on the church board for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Oma Lee Phillips of Visalia; four daughters, Ramona Wilkerson of Huntington Beach, Gail Bray of Mississippi, Rehna Troutt of Visalia and Sandra Hicks of Mississippi; two sons, Olive Daniel Phillips of  Washington and Edwin Phillips of Coalinga; three brothers, Royal and Bill Phillips of Arizona and Paul Phillips of Arkansas; seven sisters, Attie Yeaman of Virginia, Jewell Baker of Stockton, Esther Dillard and Dovie Daves of Arkansas, Dorothy Brown of Stockton, Christine Mayfield of  Oklahoma and Audean Gibson of Canada; 16 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

For visitation, friends may call 2-7 p.m. today at Smith Family Chapel, Exeter. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Jesus Name Church of Cameron Creek with burial following at Exeter Cemetery.
