Thelma Mae Embree

Retired, self-employed owner/operator

Thelma Mae Embree, 87, of Visalia died Friday, April 6, 2001. She was retired, the former owner and operator of Thelma's Gift Shop in Lindsay for 20 years.
She was born on March 26, 1914, in Ava, Mo. She married Lloyd Embree on Feb. 14, 1937 in Lindsay. He died on May 18, 1983. She was a former employee of Lindsay Ripe Olives. She was a resident of Visalia for eight years and was formerly a longtime resident of Lindsay. She attended first grade at  Washington School when it was at the present location of the Presbyterian Church. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Lindsay and a member of the Lindsay chapter of AARP.

Survivors include one son, Jerald Embree of Lafayette; two daughters, Judy Russ of Visalia and Janet Jiggerian of Dinuba; one sister, Helen Kennedy of Visalia; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. today at Webb-Sanders Funeral Home, Lindsay. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Lindsay with the Rev. Trent Oelberg officiating. Burial will be at Lindsay-Strathmore Cemetery.

Richard M. Lamkins

Born at home in Isabel, Kan., to Robert and Martha Lamkins, Richard M. Lamkins passed away in Visalia on April 5 at the age of 81. He was raised in Isabel and graduated from high school there in 1938. He served in the Navy as a baker on the USS Pensacola during World War II. He came to Visalia in 1945 and worked for Knudsen Creamery for 36 years. He married Juanita Strawser on Oct. 20, 1949, in Nevada, and she passed away in 1986. He later married Minnie E. "Betty" Davis in Nevada on Feb. 3, 1987. He was a good stepfather and grandfather to Betty's children. He was a member of the Tule Gem and Mineral Society and the VFW Sequoia Post 1864 in Visalia, where he served well.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Lamkins of Visalia; four stepchildren; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three nieces; and four nephews.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Visalia Memorial Garden in Visalia Cemetery. Officiating will be Chaplain Don Lammers and members of VFW Post 1864. Services under the direction of Smith Family Chapel, Exeter.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VFW Post 1864, National Home project, P.O. Box 404, Visalia, CA 93279.

Jose Lopez

Retired agricultural worker

TULARE -- Jose Lopez, 64, of Tulare died Friday, April 6, 2001. He was a retired agricultural worker.
For visitation, friends may call 2-8 p.m. today at Goble-Miller Funeral Chapel, Tulare. Rosary, followed by Mass, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Rita'

Catholic Church, Tulare. Interment will be at Tulare District Cemetery.

Howard Olive

Truck driver

EARLIMART -- Howard Olive, 68, of Earlimart died Thursday, April 5, 2001. He was a truck driver.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miller's Tulare Funeral Home Chapel, Tulare. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miller's Tulare Funeral Home.

Cordis Cox

Retired

Cordis E. Cox, 83, of Lindsay died Wednesday, April 25, 2001. He was a retired truck driver for Lindsay Ripe Olives for 40 years.
At his request, there were no services. Arrangements were by Webb-Sanders Funeral Home, Lindsay.

John Garay

Retired peace officer

John was born in Delano, to Pablo and Aurelia Garay on Nov. 17, 1928, left this earth on Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the age of 72 years. He attended Earlimart schools and Porterville High School. He married Julia Perez on Jan. 16, 1951. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary January 2001. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines, served from 1948-1952 and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. He is a retired captain of the California Highway Patrol, serving from 1955-1987, badge No. 1855. He is a retired colonel from the U.S. Army Reserve. He worked for the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Internal Revenue Service and Visalia City Coach. He is a graduate of the Fresno State University, FBI Academy at Quantico, Va., and a member of various law enforcement and military organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Garay; children, John L., David and Barbara; grandchildren, Louis, Lee, Star, Nick and Kerensa; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Frank, Chebo, Pete, Pablo and Gilbert; sisters, Bea and Lola; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Eloisa Bienavente.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Miller Memorial Chapel, in Visalia. Burial will be private in Hillcrest Cemetery, Porterville.

In lieu of flowers, family requests remembrances be made to the American Diabetes Association, Central Valley Chapter, 55 Shaw Ave., Suite 116, Clovis, CA 93612 or the American Cancer Society Tulare County Unit, 211 N. Encina St., Visalia, CA 93291.

Dessie M. Gullett

Homemaker

Dessie M. Gullett, 80, of Visalia died Thursday, April 26, 2001. She was a homemaker.
Dessie was born on June 17, 1920, in Okmulgee, Okla., to George and Alice Goad. The family moved to California in 1932, settling in Bakersfield. They also lived in Lemoore and Coalinga. Dessie married Delmer C. Gullett in Corcoran in 1947, and the couple established their home in Coalinga. They moved to Corcoran in 1953, where she was an active member of the PTA and VFW Women's Auxiliary, for which she served as past president. Dessie was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening in her spare time.

Survivors include her son, George Chaffin of Missouri; two daughters, Bobbie Whorton of Grants Pass, Ore., and Kathie Genter of Visalia; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Delmer C. Gullett and son, Delmer W. Gullett.

Graveside services will be private at the Visalia District Cemetery. Arrangements are by Miller Memorial Chapel, Visalia.

Morris Lee Millard

Sheriff's deputy

Morris Lee Millard, 65, of Dinuba died Wednesday, April 25, 2001. He was a Tulare County sheriff's deputy.
He was a member of Dinuba First Baptist Church and Tulare County Sheriff's Association, serving as past editor of the association paper.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Millard of Dinuba; a son, Mark Millard of Springville; a daughter, Carolyn Cortina of Dinuba; a brother, Ray Millard of Dinuba; a sister, Maureen Palsgaard of Clovis, and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Sunday at Dopkins Funeral Chapel, Dinuba. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Smith Mountain Cemetery, Dinuba.
