Dr. Thomas Russell Felsted

On Thursday, May 10, friends and family witnessed the passing of a great man, Dr. Thomas Russell Felsted. Dr. Felsted practiced adult and pediatric urology as a resident of Visalia since 1970. He had served as an elected representative of District 4 on the Kaweah Delta District Hospital board since 1994. His tireless efforts as a physician and an administrator contributed to the wellness of our community and the development of Kaweah Delta District Hospital into one of the state's finest healthcare facilities. In this, Dr. Felsted took a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment.
Dr. Felsted grew up in Heber and Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Ralph and Ruth Felsted. He returned often, visiting his younger brother, Dr. Robert Fuller. His fondness for the Hot Pots, a family homestead resort, was evident through his frequent visits to his childhood home. Dr. Felsted graduated from Salt Lake City's East High School in 1957. While there, he played varsity football for three years as a pulling guard on a two-time state championship team. He lettered in wrestling and swimming and competed for the United States ski team in 1957 in the junior division.

After graduating from East High School, he enrolled at the University of Utah. He earned bachelor of science degrees in zoology and forestry in 1961. Before graduating with his doctorate of medicine from the University of Utah in 1965, Dr. Felsted married Mary-Guinn Ahee, daughter of Dr. Carl and Lorraine Ahee of Torrance, whom he met while working for the U.S. Forest Service in Bridgeport.

The Felsteds moved to Rochester, Minn., so Dr. Felsted could complete his residency at the Mayo Clinic. During this time the couple had three children. Kimberly-Guinn was born in 1966, Thomas Jr. in 1968, and Katherine in 1970. Following this, Dr. Felsted partnered with doctors Vincent Dungan and James Rohn to form Visalia Urology, and the family established a home in Visalia. The Felsteds were blessed with another son, Michael, in 1973.

As the family grew older and became more involved in community activities, Dr. Felsted led the charge. He aided in the foundation of AYSO soccer leagues, timed for swim meets, served with the YMCA Indian Guides programs, Rotary International, and frequented the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains on innumerable excursions. Dr. Felsted was a member of the Tulare County Medical Society and American Medical Association. During this time and continuing throughout the length of his esteemed practice, Dr. Felsted benevolently assisted those that needed his expertise. His compassion for those who required his attention was matched only by his professional abilities and desire to do so.

At his passing, Dr. Felsted was married to Anne Felsted of Exeter. They married at the Presbyterian Church in North Lake Tahoe on July 15, 2000. The two shared much, including a love for raising reining horses. Dr. Felsted was an avid reader of historical documents and a meticulous gardener. He will be missed by those whose lives he touched.

Dr. Felsted is survived by his wife, Anne of Exeter, his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Robert and Colleen Fuller, and their family of Orem, Utah; his daughter, Kimberly-Guinn of Visalia; his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Jr. and Michelle of Visalia; his daughter, Katherine and her fiancÈ Kris Ratliff of Fresno; son, Michael, and his fiancÈe, Angela Elliott, of Sacramento; and grandchildren McKenzie Elizabeth Felsted, Jack Fraser Felsted, Max Raden Felsted, Alexandra Michelle Felsted, and Olivia Katherine Felsted, all of Visalia.

The viewing will be 3-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hadley Funeral Chapel, 410 W. Center Ave. Services for Dr. Felsted will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Visalia United Methodist Church, 5200 W. Caldwell.
