Shoerd M. Lanting
Retired dairyman
TULARE -- Shoerd M. Lanting, 82, of Tulare died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001. He was a retired dairyman.
Mr. Lanting was born on Nov. 27, 1918, in Heig, Netherlands. At the age of 3, he came to this country to Artesia, where he was raised and educated. He graduated from Excelsior High School in 1936. He worked with his father on the family dairy. In 1941, he purchased the dairy. He won the first gold medal awarded for milk three years in a row at the Pomona Fair. The family moved to Tulare in 1969. He operated a dairy in Visalia from 1969 through 1996. During this time he was awarded first place for quality milk three years in a row while producing for Ralph's market.
While living in Southern California, he was active in the Reform Church of America, serving as a deacon and a Sunday school and catechism teacher. He sang in the Southern California Men's Choir. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice, in 1971. He married the former Anita Wagner 27 years ago in Tulare.
In addition to his wife, Anita of Tulare, he is survived by three sons, Melvin Lanting of Molalla, Ore., Stewart Lanting of Valley Center and Bill Lanting of Visalia; two daughters, Phyllis Jones of Visalia and Esther Lanting of Wakarusa, Ind.; one brother, Broer Lanting of Chino; two sisters, Annie Troost of Mir Loma and Aggie Fikse of Victorville; one stepson, Robert Wagner of Visalia; two stepdaughters, Terri Reid of San Diego and Dana Godinho of Tulare; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Miller's Tulare Funeral Home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Tulare Community Church. Burial will be in the Tulare Cemetery.

Samuel 'Sam' Otis Logan
CLEARLAKE OAKS -- On a warm sunny day, in the not too distant past, "Big John," one of the Logan family's prized appaloosa horses, lay down in a grassy field amongst the wild flowers, went to sleep, and never woke up.
Wednesday evening, Jan. 24, 2001, Samuel Otis Logan of Clearlake Oaks joined "Big John."
Sam, 85, beloved father of Sam, Doug and Ila Logan, father-in-law of Marie and Donna, grandfather of Sam and Jennifer, husband of the late Helen Claire Logan, passed away at Kaiser Hospital in Walnut Creek of complications relating to a broken hip.
Born on Jan. 21, 1916, in Oklahoma, Sam lived the majority of his life in California, first visiting Lake County in 1942. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army horse cavalry, and the U.S. Navy, in which he served during World War II. He was a prisoner of war and the recipient of many medals, including two purple hearts and the Navy's Distinguished Service Medal.
He was a member of Plumbers Local 38, the Clearlake Oaks Moose Lodge, the Live Oak Seniors and the Lake County Sheriffs Posse. He will be remembered for his love of animals.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Jones & Lewis Clear Lake Memorial Chapel in LowerLake.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated at the Live Oak Senior Center in Clearlake Oaks or the Clearlake Oaks Fire Department.
Deonisio 'Don' Z. Mendoza
Deonisio joined the love of his life Frances 34 days after her departure to heaven on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001.
Niche was a World War II veteran who served in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Before serving his country, he was a boxer known as Johnny Mendoza. Throughout his life he not only served his Lord but his community. He retired as a custodial technician from Valley Medical Center, now University Medical Center. He was also a former foster grandparent. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Prayer Group Disabled American Vets, C.M. De B 25.
He leaves behind his daughter, Patsy of Fresno; a son, Mike and wife, Maggie; granddaughters, Melissa, Michelle and Miranda of Hanford; sisters, Chana Amesquita and Nellie Sapien of Fresno and Nickie Flynn; brother, Tony Mendoza of Visalia; and numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
Visitation will be 2-7 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Lisle Funeral Home, Fresno. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lisle Calaveras Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will be at Fresno Memorial Gardens.

Alberto C. Aguilar
FARMERSVILLE -- Alberto C. Aguilar, 69, of Farmersville died Monday, June 11, 2001 of cancer. He was a retired machinist.
He will be best remembered as a caring husband, loving father and Korean veteran.
He is survived by spouse, Molly Aguilar; one son, Alberto Jr. Aguilar of Exeter; three daughters, Delia Aguilar of Tulare, Sara Gomez of Visalia, and Anita Aguilar of Farmersville; one brother, Lauro Aguilar of Tulare; two sisters, Aurora Hernandez and Gloria Sifuentez both of Farmersville; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren,
Viewing will be from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday at Hadley Farmersville. Services will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Hadleys Farmersville. Memorial service will be from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Hadley Farmersville.
Loretta Avina
Loretta E. Avina, 48, of Visalia died Tuesday, June 12, 2001. She was a homemaker.
Richard Smith Barman
Richard Smith Barman, 81, of Visalia died Monday, June 11, 2001. He was retired.
Richard Smith Barman was born in Olinda on April 17, 1920, to Guy and Martha Barman. He graduated from Brea-Olinda High School. He attended many trade schools, taking air conditioning classes. Richard moved to Visalia in 1950 and was a member of Visalia Community Covenant Church. He met and married Eleanor Bewley in 1960. They both had children from previous marriages. He retired from Southern California Edison after 35 years of service. Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Barman, in 1998. Richard will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Survivors include a son, Dennis Barman of Clovis; two step-sons, Garland Smith of Visalia and Dennis E. Smith of Austin, Texas; and a step-daughter, Colleen Walker of Ohio.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Visalia Community Covenant Church. Arrangements are by Miller Memorial Chapel, Visalia.

Jay Cadenhead
Jay Cadenhead, 84, of Visalia died Monday, June 11, 2001. Graveside services will be 9 a.m. Friday at Visalia District Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hadley Funeral Chapel, Visalia.
Hazel N. Dority
Hazel N. Dority, 80, a lifetime resident of Visalia, passed away Monday, June 4, 2001.
She was born Sept. 5, 1920, to Chester S. and Myrtle Iris (Dailey) Huntley of Visalia. Her family lived on the Huntley Ranch, east of town on Mineral King Avenue. Hazel attended East Lynne School and graduated in 1938 from Visalia Union High School. She attended College of the Sequoias and worked at Sequoia Field during the war. While later employed at Bank of America, she met and married Melvin B. Dority of Hanford in 1947.
Mel and Hazel built their family home next to her parents' on the ranch east of Visalia. They had one daughter, Rosemary. Hazel was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Visalia Unit 18, where she spent years of devoted, patriotic service. She had the opportunity to serve in all areas of the auxiliary, including president, and was music chairwoman at the time of her passing. She will be missed at the VA picnics and the annual poppy drive.
Hazel was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Visalia First Ward. She is fondly remembered as a devoted primary president and one who was always willing to serve and be a friend and comfort to others.
Hazel was preceded in death by her father, mother and husband. She is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Isbell of Arizona; five grandchildren, Colleen Murphy and her husband, Chris, Rebecca Tolman and her husband, Adam, Jared Isbell and his wife, Megan, Isbell, Derek Isbell and Amanda Isbell; and three great-grandchildren, Benjamin Murphy and Kaylie and Brenden Tolman. She will be missed by all her family and countless friends.
Services were Monday morning at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 650 N. Lovers Lane, Visalia. Burial followed at the Visalia Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Perpetual Education Fund.
