Howard B. Draper, 65, of North Vernon, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2007, at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital. Born May 22, 1941, in Galena, Kansas, he was the son of Faye and Juanita Brown Draper.
Mr. Draper had previously worked as a meat cutter for Armour Meats in Dixon for over 20 years. He enjoyed water skiing, racing motorcycles, and fishing.
He is survived by his mother, Juanita Draper of Winters; daughter, Darla (Paul) Reitman of North Vernon, Indiana; sons and daughter-in-law, Charles and Denise Draper, and John Draper, all of Winters; grandchildren, Jamie, Eric, Naomi, and Jessie Draper, Ashlynn Evans, Teresa, Sarah, Makayla, and Andrea Reitman, and one great-grandchild, Elizabeth Evans; brother, Bill Draper of Virginia Beach, Virginia; former wifen Janice Draper of Winters.
He was preceded in death by his father, Faye Draper, and brother, Bob Draper.
Arrangements were made in care of Sawyer~Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at Sawyer~Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service, with the Reverend Dan Corbin officiating. Visitation was held on Friday, May 6, at the funeral home. Burial took place at the Vernon Cemetery.
Joseph “Joe” Mazzola passed away from natural causes on May 7, 2007 at home in Winters. Born on July 3, 1912 in Summers, Michigan, he was 94 years old.
He worked as a tire builder at Uniroyal Tire Company in Detroit for about 35 years before moving to Winters in 1970 to retire. During his time in Winters, he worked part time as a bus driver for the Winters School District for about five years. He loved gardening and going for walks.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Carole and Bob Means of Garden Valley; grandchildren Tom Reichmann of Roseville and Cheri Trost of Winters; five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Mazzola; and two brothers and one sister.
Graveside services are planned for Thursday, May 10, at 11 a.m. at the Winters Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to a reception immediately following the services at Mr. Mazzola’s home.
Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Mazzola’s name to the Winters Healthcare Foundation or an organization of the donor’s choice.
Cameron David Weins died April 12, 2007, in an auto accident in Elko, Nevada. Born in Sacramento on May 8, 1977, he was 29 years old.
He attended school in Davis and graduated from high school in Winters. He was a gifted artist, winning many awards for his furniture and artwork. He was also trained as a carpenter and builder by his father and grandfather from an early age. He was first and foremost a dedicated father.
He and his son Dakota were inseparable; he centered his work and entire life around making a loving home for his son. They shared a love of the outdoors, fishing and hunting, always in pursuit of the next adventure.
“He loved his family, and his many friends who deeply treasured him also,” says a family member. “Cameron was upbeat, positive and always ready with a quip or funny story. He could fix anything and could always come up with a unique and creative way to solve problems. Cameron will be deeply missed by all of us.”
He is survived by his son, Dakota Cameron Weins, age 6; parents, Don and Carole Weins of Winters; sister and brother-in-law, Demetria and Daniel Gordon of Winnemucca, Nevada; brother and sister-in-law Adrian and Ilein Weins of Davis; maternal grandmother, Janet Barmettler of Winters; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Hugh Barmettler.
A memorial service for Mr. Weins took place April 21 in Elko, Nevada.
Antonio (Tony) Molina passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at his home in Winters at the age of 95. Tony was born in Lubrin, Spain on Jan. 25, 1912 to Diego and Adela Molina. At the age of 19, he made the trip across the Atlantic to Ellis Island, New York, where he worked in a silk factory until he journeyed to California to be with his family in Esparto. There, he worked as a farmer, owning his own land and pruning many farmer’s orchards to keep his men busy during the winter time. He went on later to work at the Almond CO-OP in Winters and then the Mariani Nut Company. He retired in June of 1985 at the age of 72. He and his wife, Maria Campos Molina, moved to Woodland a few years later. He has resided in Winters for the past three and a half years.
He is survived by his son, Diego (Dick) Molina of Winters; daughter, Janice Curran and her partner Mike Gilday of Woodland; grandson Robert Carrion and his wife Barbara of Winters; grandson Aaron Carrion and his wife Lori of Zamora; and granddaughter Toni Swanger and her husband Ken of Woodland; great-grandchildren Anthony, Daniel and Gianna Carrion of Winters; sister Mary Molina Perez of Winters; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Francisco, his sisters Francisca Martinez and Natividad Martinez.
A rosary vigil will take place at McNary’s in Woodland on Monday, May 7, at 7 p.m. and a Christian Mass of Burial on Tuesday, May 8, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Winters. Burial will follow the Mass at St Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery
in Woodland. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Yolo Hospice.
Lorraine Dirkje Wellonen passed away on April 17, 2007 in Davis after a long battle with cancer. Born on Feb. 25, 1924 in Sandy City, Utah, she was 83 years old. Formerly of Thousand Oaks, she moved to Winters in 1975.
Family members say the most important things in her life were family and church. She was an avid flower and vegetable gardener, and a master seamstress. They say she “walked through life leaving a wide wake of love and affection as she passed; all who crossed her path were blessed by that love.”
She is survived by her spouse of 66 years, Reino; children and their spouses, Jack and Georgian Wellonen of Springfield, Missouri, and Carl Wellonen of Winters; grandchildren, Emily, Jason, Cher and Stephanie; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Carl Vreeken of Las Vegas, Nevada, Le Grand Vreeken of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Zina Cheesman of Utah; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Wellonen Morrill of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Pearl Vreeken, son Dennis, brother John Vreeken and sister Pearl Vreeken.
Services took place on April 24, 2007 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Winters.
Hoyle Truman Humphrey, 79, of Sonora passed away at Sonora Hospital on April 19, 2007. He was born on Oct. 23, 1927 in New Blaine, Arkansas. He enlisted in the Army in 1945, where he spent time in Japan after the atomic bombings, doing repair and clean-up. He was proud of his service in the Army, say family members. He worked as a PG&E lineman foreman for more than 40 years and was a member of the IBEW.
Family members say he had a green thumb and could get just about anything to grow. He created a showplace flower garden while living in Magalia. He loved nature and could sit for hours soaking up all the beauty and the sounds of silence. He also enjoyed fishing, especially in his retirement. Most of all, he loved his family, who describe him as “a caretaker through and through.”
He is survived by his wife, Pat, who he married in 1961; children, Karen Sellers, Sheila White, Michael Humphrey, and Darla Presba and her stepchildren, Eleanor Day, Judy Raridan and Margaret Egger; grandchildren, Tobie, Kelly and Cholena Humphrey, Landon and Erin Sellers, Caitlin Egger, Yvonne Payne, Lisa, Barb and Stacy Houck; siblings, Art Humphrey and Marge Cameron; ex-wife, Bobbie Fisher; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kate and Arnold Humphrey, brothers, Haskell, Richard and Hofferd Humphrey; grandson, Matthew Sellers, and stepson Ronald Knutson.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, April 25, at the Winters Cemetery.
Edith Irene “Reene” Holman passed away on Monday, April 10, 2007 at Alderson’s Convalescent Hospital in Woodland, at the age of 90. She was born in Buffalo, Wyoming on March 14, 1917 to Oliver and Ellen (Hitzman) Lewis, who have predeceased her.
Mrs. Holman was a Yolo County resident for the last 42 years. She worked as a bookkeeper for Ford Garage in Winters and was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Winters.
She is survived by her daughter Annette Rojo Pastorino and spouse Pete of Woodland; son-in-law John Martin, and stepbrother Wendell Lewis of South Dakota; grandchildren Marianne Washabaugh and spouse Tim, John Martin and spouse Denise, Tom Martin and spouse Gina, and Joanne Knudson and spouse Sean, all of Winters, and Debbie Carbahal and spouse Manny of Davis, Rhonda Smith and spouse Dave of Salem, Oregon, Nikki Phepps and spouse Larry of Woodland, and Annette Rojo and spouse Mike of Dixon; 20 great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband Carl Holman, daughter Pat Martin and brother Wayne Lewis.
A graveside service was held on Monday, April 16, at 10:30 a.m. at the Winters Cemetery, with Father Chuck Kelley officiating. Memorial donations in Mrs. Holman’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 530 Bercut Dr., Suite A, Sacramento, CA 95814-0101.
Robert “Bob” Charles Bruhn, 57, passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2007. He was born on June 18, 1949 in Woodland to Vernon C. and Vera Yarberry Bruhn.
He grew up in Winters, then moved to Colorado in 1979 and returned to Winters in 1999. He received his Fire Science Certificate from Yuba Community College and has worked for over 35 years as a Heavy Equipment Operator. He loved working in his shop rebuilding engines and refurbishing his boat. He also enjoyed visiting with his good buddies.
He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Sue Bruhn; parents, Vernon C. and Vera Bruhn; children, Michael Bruhn, Sylvia Bruhn and Sondra McGhee; stepchildren, Jodi Chavez, Phillip Timm and Jeff Timm; father and mother in-law, Mark and Martha Reimer; sister, Elizabeth Ehnat; brothers, Vernon E. Bruhn, II and Jeffery Bruhn; grandchildren, Hope and Trey Bruhn; step-grandchildren, Bronson, Brittney, Craig and Eddie Chavez, and Taylor, Emma and Sidney Timm, and Madison Timm.
A celebration of his life took place on Tuesday, April 17, at 11 a.m. at the Winters Fire Department with a viewing one hour prior to services. Interment was be private.
Grant Huneke Lindeman, a lifelong resident of rural Winters, died near Los Banos on March 30, 2007, in a crash of his privately owned airplane. He was born on Dec. 2, 1975, the second son of Robert and Christine Lindeman.
An avid horseman since childhood with a strong work ethic, Lindeman worked on area cattle ranches with his loyal dog Bruno. He also enjoyed dirt biking as a young man and water skiing with his family. Educated in the Winters schools, he was a 1994 graduate of Winters High School, where he won numerous football honors for his athletic skills as a center, defensive linebacker and member of the special teams. During his senior year Winters captured the Butte View League in an undefeated sweep.
Special football honors included his selection as Winters High School Defensive MVP, Butte View All-League Team Linebacker, All Superior California Football Team, and First Team Defense for the All Northern Section Football Team. He was also named All State First Team Linebacker, and after graduation was selected to play in the East-West All Star Football Classic and the Optimist All Star Football games. Lindeman continued his education at Sacramento State University, where he was a member of the varsity football team.
On May 5, 2001, he married the love of his life, the former Betty Hurley of Los Banos, and the young couple started Lindeman Fence, a business specializing in livestock fencing that operates throughout northern and central California. Utilizing his lifelong passion for flying, Lindeman earned his private pilot’s license in 2003, his instrument flight rating in 2006, and used the 1948 Ryan Navion and the Bellanca Citabria planes he purchased to promote his business. Six months ago he began flying a L-39 Albatros Jet, with hopes of racing it this September in the Reno Air Races. Recently he took his first lesson in a T-6, and his true dream was to pilot a Mustang P-51. He and his wife were also active members of the Imperial Valley Navion Club and the American Navion Society.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Harriett Lindeman; son, Jett Mayhew Lindeman; parents, Robert and Christine Lindeman; brother, Luke; in-laws, Jim and Sally Hurley; brothers-in-law Chase and his wife Dana Hurley, Shane Hurley, and Bill and his wife Stacy Hurley, and Jack Hurley, all of Los Banos; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ken and Liz Huneke, and his paternal grandparents, Jack and Betty Lindeman, all of Winters.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Grant Lindeman will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, at the Yolo County Airport, off County Road 95. The Reverend Dr. Douglas K. Huneke, Pastor of the Tiburon Presbyterian Church and uncle of the deceased, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the Lindeman and Hurley families have established a trust fund for Jett Lindeman. Contributions in memory of Grant Lindeman may be sent to the “Jett Lindeman Trust” at the First Northern Bank, P.O. Box 957, Winters, CA 95694.
