Robert La Fountaine
Robert David La Fountaine died May 17, 2004 at his home in Pleasanton. He was 67.
The Oregon native had lived in Pleasanton for 15 years. He worked as a truck driver for 30 years and was a member of the Teamsters Union. He was also a member of Jehovahs Witness.
He is survived by his wife Kathy La Fountaine of Pleasanton, sons David La Fountaine of Spokane, WA., Steven La Fountaine of Livermore, Robert La Fountaine of Azusa, CA., and Joseph La Fountaine of Warm Springs, Arkansas; his mother LaVerne Dill of Prescott, AZ, a brother William La Fountain of Downey, and six grandchildren.

Walter T. Gwin
Walter T. Gwin died May 15, 2004 at ValleyCare Medical Center in Pleasanton. He was 76.
The Washington native had lived in Pleasanton for 30 years. He was a World War II veteran serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Breckinridge. He worked as an area supervisor for AT&T for 36 years.
He is survived by his wife Rose G. Gwin of Pleasanton, a son John Styles of Pleasanton, daughter Sharon Marts of Granite Bay, stepdaughter Rose Duncan of Tracy, sisters Mary Williamson of Olympia, WA, Patty Hougen of Shelton, WA, and Suzie Fitzpatrick of Spokane, WA., and seven grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Fri., May 28 at the San Joaquin National Cemetery, 32053 West McCabe Rd., Gustine.

Roger K. Haydock
Roger K. Haydock died May 19, 2004 at ValleyCare Medical Center in Pleasanton. He was 51.
The New York native was a Pleasanton resident. He graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree and later earned an MBA with honors from Saint Mary’s College. He began working for Bradshaw Inc.- North in 1976 as a Fresno Territory Manager and moved to Pleasanton in the mid-1980s to continue his career with the company. He worked his way up from an entry-level position to become of President, a position which he held from 1993 to 1998 at which time the company was sold to Crossmark, Inc. In addition to having exceptional business skills, Roger was well liked and trusted. He most recently worked as a commercial real estate consultant at K. Wayne Rice & Associates Inc. He was a licensed pilot, a drummer and a certified scuba diver. His hobbies included landscaping, golfing and fishing. He loved to spend time with his family, go to the movies, and watch West Wing.
He is survived by his wife Michelle Haydock, their son Grayson Haydock, age 5, a stepson Bridger Giglio, 9, all of Pleasanton, his mother Kathryn Chardin of San Jacinto, sister and brother-in-law Carolyn and Forrest Ward of Stockton, and godson Chase Haydock of Pleasanton. He was preceded in death by his father Francis “Frank” Haydock in 2003.
A memorial service was held May 22 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pleasanton.

Bonnie Hebenstreich
Bonnie Smith Hebenstreich died May 18, 2004 in San Francisco. She was 72.
The Arkansas native had lived in Livermore for fifty years. She was an avid bowler and bingo player and loved going to garage sales. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
She is survived by daughters Darlene Washburn of Napa, Tammy Sparrow of Brentwood and Suzy Gard of Oakley, sons Jimmie Smith of Tracy and Billie Smith of Fremont, a sister Mary Crawford of Georgia, and brothers L.T. Stinnett of Illinois, Dough Stinnett of Oklahoma, and Chester Stinnett of California, sixteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held May 24 in Livermore. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery
in Livermore.

Virgil Bretz
Virgil Arlyn Bretz died May 20, 2004 at the age of 69.
A native of Missouri, he came to Livermore Feb. 1, 1941. He lived in the city for 35 years before moving to Brentwood where he has lived for 28 years. He graduates from Livermore High School in 1952, where he excelled in football and FFA. He was a avid bowler, fastpitch softball player and loved to hunt. He was a retired welder, part-time rancher and active member of Golden Hills Community Church.
He is survived by his wife Julie, his mother Roberta Bretz of Los Banos, son Steven of Livermore, daughters Donivan Seymour of Stockton, Laura Bretz of Brentwood, brothers Garlyn and his wife Shirley, Gene and his wife Mary all of Los Banos, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Bretz.
A memorial service was held May 26 at Golden Hills Community Church in Brentwood. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or Golden Hills Community Church, 2941 Shady Willow Lane, Brentwood, CA 94513.

Wesley Chase
Wesley Chase died May 22, 2004 in Livermore. He was 83.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY. Prior to moving to Livermore, he lived in Pleasanton. His school years were spent in Westwood, NJ. After being drafted in 1942, he served with the 11th Airborne in the Pacific. He was awarded the Bronze Star in Vietnam, 1967-68. After retiring from Oakland Army Base in 1971, he attended Chabot College and San Jose State. He was a real estate broker in both New York and California.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet, a son and daughter-in-law Richard and Cheryl Chase of Tracy, daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and John Woffington of Pleasanton, and three grandchildren. Internment will be at the San Joaquin National Cemetery
in Gustine.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Hope Hospice would be appreciated by the family.
Charlotte Shafto
Charlotte Anne Shafto died May 16, 2004 in Rocklin. She was 83.
The Illinois native had lived in Rocklin for two years. She is survived by sons Larry Shafto of Newcastle and Glenn Shafto, a sister Betty Jean Olsen, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lyle Shafto, her daughter Penny (Shafto) Geddes, a granddaughter Errin (McCabe) Dimaggio, and brothers Samuel (Bud) Kirkbride and Myron Kirkbride.
A memorial service will be held graveside at 1 p.m. on Fri., May 28 at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 3873 East Ave., Livermore.

Robert Demeyer
Robert Jules Demeyer died May 22, 2004 at Valley Memorial Hospital in Livermore. He was 90.
Born in Belgium, he had lived in Pleasanton for 55 years. He worked for the Pleasanton Unified School District for 27 years. Prior to that he had served in the Belgium Army. He loved working in his garden.
He is survived by a daughter Gabrielle Seymour of Pleasanton, granddaughters, Sandra Caffey of Pleasanton and Tracey Seymour-Smith of Livermore, grandsons Jerry Seymour of Camarillo, Rick Seymour of Pleasanton, Dan Valadao of Mareno Valley, Joe Valadao of Ontario and Gary Valadao of Nuevo; seventeen great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Flore Demeyer, and a daughter Fernande Valadao in 1992.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thurs., May 27 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 3999 Bernal Avenue, Pleasanton. Burial will be at St. Augustine’s Catholic Cemetery
in Pleasanton.

David Weir
David Philip Weir died May 21, 2004 following a brief illness. He was 58.
The Chicago native was a Pleasanton resident. He moved to Hayward at the age of 3 where he was a Boy Scout achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Hayward High School in 1963 where he lettered in football and from Cal State Hayward in 1967 with a degree in Political Science. While at Cal State he played rugby and was invited to play in Australia upon graduation. He served as a volunteer firefighter for the Valley Community Services District. His career started as an operations agent and assistant station manager for PSA Airlines, where he met his wife Magee. They recently celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary. His career path took him to Prudential Overall Supply as a sales manager, Aramark as a general manager and Hawker-Trojan Battery as an area manager. He was currently employed by 1-800-Buy-Back.
He is survived by his wife Magee, mother Mary Weir of San Ramon, brother John and nieces Carol and Patricia of Fremont, mother-in-law Evelyn Patton, sisters and brothers-in-law Melinda and Don Hicks and Michelle and Michael Schieben, all of Mobile, AL. He was preceded in death by his father Phil Weir.
Dave was a member of Alisal Lodge #321 and Aahmes Shrine Temple. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining. He was passionate about reading and was affectionately known as “Encyclopedia Dave.” He was an ardent Cal Bear fan.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sat., June 5 at Graham-Hitch Mortuary, 4167 First St., Pleasanton. It will be followed immediately by a reception at Dave and Magee’s home. In the spirit of Aloha, Hawaiian attire is requested.

Leonard Thibault
Leonard R. Thibault went to heaven to join his departed wife, Denise M. Thibault, for their life together in heaven on May 22, 2004 at the age of 85.
He died at ValleyCare Medical Center in Pleasanton. He was born in San Francisco. He retired from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he worked from 1952 to 1973, to spend more time with his wife and family. His last position at the Lab was building coordinator. He really enjoyed his work as a design engineer. Prior to his work at the Lab, he worked in design engineering for Bechtel and later Cal Research while taking classes at Stanford and UC Berkeley. He was educated in San Francisco, served as an altar boy at St. Ignatius and contemplated joining the priesthood. Instead he met and married his wife, Denise. He joined the army infantry when the war broke out where he became a 2nd Lieutenant training men to go overseas to serve in World War II. His other activities included driving for his wife, a prominent Real Estate Broker (Thibault Realty) to attend seminars, show property, present offers, and other aspects of her job. He also helped make floats for the Girl Scouts, drove his daughters to swim practices and AAU swim meets where he served as head judge. He drove to mass on Sundays at St. Michael’s and later to midnight mass at St. Augustine’s in Pleasanton. He loved attending his grandchildren’s swim meets, soccer games, baseball games, school plays, open houses and hosting the annual Christmas celebration that included the entire Thibault family.
He is survived by daughters Dianne Thibault Masluk and Lucille Thibault McPherson, seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, sisters Marie Rose Truitt, who was raised by Leonard and his wife from the age of two following the death of their mother, Rose; and Audrey Finnegan, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Fri., May 28 with Rosary at 7 p.m. at Callaghan Mortuary, 3833 East Avenue, Livermore. A chapel blessing service will be held at 11 a.m. Sat., May 29 at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars or the American Heart Association.
Arthur Levesque
Arthur Gus Levesque died May 24, 2004 at his home in Livermore. He was 80.
The Rhode Island native had lived in Livermore for 22 years. He was an avid horse fan who loved golf and gambling in Reno.
He is survived by his wife Shirley Levesque; daughter and son-in-law Margaret O'Brien and Terry Hofer of Manteca, daughters Robin Gustafson of Sparks, NV, and Barbara Mullins of Livermore; sons Arthur Levesque, Jr. of Reno, NV., and Melvin Walker of Gold Hill, OR., ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Cremation by Callaghan Mortuary. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart and Lung Association in Oakland.
Pamela Jean Escobar
Pamela Jean Escobar died July 19, 2004 in Greece. She was 49.
The Chicago native had lived in Pleasanton for 28 years. She belonged to a women¹s Bible study group at Valley Christian Church and also helped out families at the Tri-Valley Haven by adopting them at Christmas time and ensuring they would have a Christmas with her generous heart. She loved working in her garden, particularly enjoying purple and lavender flowers. Residents at Ruby Hill lined the street and entrance to her home with violet and lavender ribbons in her honor.
She is survived by her husband Constantino Karkalemis, sons Noel Escobar and Yanni Karkalemis, both of Pleasanton, her mother Inez Silberhorn of Pleasanton, and many dear and loving friends.
Funeral services were held July 27 in Livermore. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery

Caroline G. Rodrigues
Caroline Rodrigues died July 20, 2004 in her home at Eden Villa in Pleasanton. She lived a good, long life and died of old age at 99-1/2 years.
She was born Dec. 27, 1904 on her parents¹ farm in Merced. She enjoyed married life with her husband, Joe Rodrigues, and son, "Roddy" Rodrigues. Caroline lived in the home they built in Livingston for over 74 years. Joe and Caroline were long time members of the Livingston community where they first had a grocery store and later ran a successful trucking business hauling fruit. She was a member of St. Jude¹s Church and council #120 of S.P.R.S.I. She was a no-nonsense woman who sewed her own clothes, kept beautiful vegetable and flower gardens and cooked great meals. She also loved to dance and entertain her family with the many stories of her life.
She will be missed by nephew Greg Avellar of Merced, niece Julie Miller of Modesto, daughter-in-law Carol Kaplan, three granddaughters, Kathy Tucker of Pleasanton, Karen Haas of San Ramon, Susan Leathers of San Carlos, and her six great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Calvary Cemetery

John Payne
John Payne passed away at his home on July 22, 2004 surrounded by his wife and children. The Kentucky native was born in 1932. He attended General Motors Tech in Flint, Michigan then transferred to the University of Michigan where he graduated with a B.A. in 1956 and a masters degree in 1957, both in engineering. He went to work for Martin Company in Baltimore, then moved with his bride to California where he worked at Aerojet for nine years. The family moved to Pleasanton in 1969 where he worked for Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical until his retirement. John¹s incredible intelligence showed, not only in his work, but in the varied hobbies he pursued with a keen curiosity and celebration of knowledge. He was an avid reader, computer nut, golfer and punmeister extraordinaire. The hobby he was most known and appreciated for was his gift for brewing beer.
He is survived by Jean Payne, his wife of 48 years; son John and his wife Donica, daughter Karen and her husband Matthew, son Bob and his wife Cathy, daughter Vicky and her husband Michael, five grandchildren and a brother, Denis Payne.
A service celebrating John¹s life will be held on August 7 at Graham-Hitch in Pleasanton, 4167 First St., at 3 p.m.

Ron Curtola
Ron Curtola died Sept. 27, 2004 in Fremont. He was 85.
The Fresno, CA native had lived in Pleasanton for 49 years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a pilot in the Pacific during World War II. He retired with the rank of captain. After the war, he operated El Curtola restaurant in Oakland. In 1952, he joined his brother, Larry Curtola, at the present day Castlewood Country Club where he served as general manager for 20 years. In 1974 he designed and opened Pleasanton Fairways Golf Course, which he operated for 30 years. He served as president of the Pleasanton School Board in the mid-1960s. His hobbies include golf and gin rummy.
He is survived by his sons Ron Curtola, Jr. and Randy Curtola, both of Pleasanton, a sister Stella Pecorella of Vacaville and two grandchildren, Nick and Colby Curtola. He was preceded in death by his wife Claire Curtola in 1997.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Fri., Oct. 8 at Graham-Hitch Mortuary, 4167 First St., Pleasanton. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Oddfellows Memorial Park in Livermore.
