Curtis Messinger

Curtis Messinger died December 2, 2004 at his home in Pleasanton. He was 76. The New York native had lived in Pleasanton for 35 years. He earned a BA in geology from Cornell in 1952 and an MS in engineering geology from U Mass in 1958. He served in both the U.S. Marines and the Air Force. He had retired from his work as an engineering geologist. He was a member of the American Legion and was Commander of the 10th District at the time of his death. His hobbies included hiking, attending nature classes, cooking, watching Jeopardy, working crossword puzzles and walking his dog at Shadow Cliffs. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ardis (Smith) Messinger, son and daughter-in-law Lee and Cathy; daughter Lyn Messinger and her husband Michael (Nard), a brother Donald Messinger, sisters Betty Thoms and Mildred Griswald and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Ida Messinger. Graveside ceremonies will be held Dec. 13 at 1:30 p.m. at the San Joaquin National Cemetery, 32053 West McCabe Rd., Gustine. Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.

Pearl Kay Turanski

Pearl Key Turanski died December 4, 2004 in Pleasanton. She was 86. The Illinois native had lived in Pleasanton for 15 years moving here from Morton Grove, Illinois where she had lived for fifty years. She worked as a hostess for 30 years at Jake’s Restaurant in Skokie, IL. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and VIP of the Pleasanton Senior Center. Her hobbies including shopping till she dropped, cooking, baking, creating crafts, and playing cards. She is survived by her dear companion of 10 years, Jack Fiorio of Pleasanton, a son John Turanski of Davis, a daughter, Pat Mitchell of Pleasanton, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, John Turanski who died in 1989, her parents, Helen and Ed Pelka, and her ten brothers and sisters. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thurs., Dec. 9 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 4001 Stoneridge Dr., Pleasanton. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, IL. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Pearl Kay Turanski to a charity of choice. Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.

Jose Carrillo

Jose Trinidad Carrillo died December 4, 2004 in Oakland. He was 62. The native of Mexico had lived in Oakland for 40 years. He owned Eagle Body Shop for thirty years. His best memories were when his grandchildren were born, the Raiders, and everyday life with his wife. He loved to read and collect things. He was a member of the 400 Club. He is survived by his wife Laura Carrillo, daughters Martha Laura Carrillo and Lupe Carrillo and sons Jorge Carrillo and Scott Donoven, all of Livermore, sisters Ofelia Delgado, Martha Lova, Laura Duron and Rosa Chavez and a brother Jorge Carrillo, all of El Paso,  Texas, as well as three grandchildren. Graveside services were held at Roselawn Cemetery in Livermore in December 8.

Madeline E. Borges

Madeline E. Borges died January 26, 2005 in Hayward. She was 85. The California native had lived in Hayward for four years. She was a member of St. Leanders Catholic Church of San Leandro. She will be remembered for being an extremely independent woman and a free spirit. She loved her nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews very much. She is survived by a sister, Alice Preuss, of Grass Valley. Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 458 Maple St., Livermore, at 11 a.m. on Thurs., Feb. 3. Burial will be at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Livermore. Arrangements by Callaghan Mortuary.

Donald Gerard Colhour

Donald Gerard Colhour died January 19, 2005 at Kaiser in Fremont. He was 66. The native of San Francisco had lived in Oakley for the past six years. He liked playing on the computer, enjoyed his grandkids and fishing. In his younger years, he enjoyed camping. He also liked to bowl. He is survived by daughters Kimberly Lohman of Oakley and Diane Redpath of Gresham, OR, sons Raymond J. Colhour of Oakley, Rueben Guerin of Tillamook, OR and Daniel Colhour, a sister Charli Colhour of Ione, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. No services are planned. Burial will be private. Memorials may be made to the tsunami relief fund. Arrangements by Callaghan Mortuary.

Evangeline “Dee” Damon

Evangeline “Dee” Lydia Damon died January 14, 2005 at Kaiser in Hayward. She was 89. The Ohio native had lived in Livermore for 60 years. She helped to build St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Livermore. Her affiliations included Sirrettes, Bowling League, Red Hat Society, Soroptimist, Ground Observer Corp. and the Women’s Auxiliary. “Dee” liked to garden and while gardening wore her army boots and khakis. She served in the United States Army from 1942-1946. She was the first WAC in the women’s army corp started in 1942 at the beginning of the war. Evangeline was also the secretary for the superintendent of the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District for 22 years. Her daughter says, “What mom would probably tell folks to do, is take the time to listen to some really good music, plant some bulbs and flowers, or read an interesting book.” She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Drewann Damon-Kim and John Kim of Discovery Bay, a son and daughter-in-law Jean and John Damon of McKinleyville and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Henry Damon in 1987 and a son, Nicholas Henry Damon, who died while serving as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam in 1971. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. Funeral services will be private. Inurnment will be with her husband at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno. Memorials may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society, 7000 Village Parkway, Suite E, Dublin, CA 94568, or to the American Heart Association, 11200 Golf Links Rd., Oakland, CA 94605. Stephen Sklepowich

Stephen Alexander Sklepowich died January 28, 2005 in Pleasanton. He was 94. The native of Canada had lived in Dublin for several months. Prior to that he had lived in Corona, CA for 50 years. He earned a BA and continued with graduate studies. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. His occupation was a teacher and administrator. He belonged to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Los Angeles. His hobbies included playing golf and singing in the choir. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Evelyn Sklepowich, three nieces, a nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Fedora Zaramba Sklepowich and Fruzyno Ficyez and eleven brothers and sisters. Private graveside services were held at the San Joaquin National Cemetery in Gustine. Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.

Elsie Wirick

Elsie Wirick died January 29, 2005 in Pleasanton. She was 76. The native of England had lived in Pleasanton for 37 years. She was a member of the Daughters of the British Empire. Her hobbies included fishing, gardening, and reading. She really adored her animals. She had many dear friends and numerous nieces and nephews she loved and who will miss her deeply. She is survived by her husband Paul Wirick and a brother Roy Beyes of England. Funeral services will be held Fri., Feb. 4 at 1:30 p.m. at Callaghan Mortuary, 3833 East Avenue, Livermore. Burial will be at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Livermore. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements by Callaghan Mortuary.

Patricia Abbott

Patricia Abbott died February 7, 2005 in Pleasanton. She was 79. The Oakland, CA native had lived in Pleasanton for 28 years. Prior to that she had lived in San Lorenzo for 30 years. She studied liberal arts for two years in college, became a homemaker, and at one time worked for the Western Pacific Railroad. Her hobbies included gardening, traveling and reading. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, William “Bill” Abbott, a daughter, Linda Abbott, who resides in  South Carolina and two grandchildren, Eric and Matthew. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Hazel Connelly and a brother, Jim Connelly. Private family services will be held. Close friends will be in attendance. Burial will be private. Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.

David A. Vize

David A. Vize died February 8, 2005 in San Ramon. He was 68. The Missouri native had lived in San Ramon for 35 years. He served in the USMC at Camp Pendleton. He received his bachelor’s degree in business at St. Louis University, and then worked as a food broker for 43 years. He was a member of the St. Louis Bombers Club, San Ramon Soccer League in Dublin, and the Grocery Industry in the Bay Area for 35 years in food distribution. He was a senior black belt instructor at Tangsoo-Do Martial Arts, and was also an AARP safe driving instructor. He was an avid grandfather. He is survived by a son, David M. Vize of Antelope, a daughter Mary Vize-Verhulst of St. James, NY, sisters Susan Zimmerman of Chicago and Dixie Vize of St. Louis, MO., a brother Paul Vize of Chesterfield, MO., and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary (Pat) Vize in 1991 and two brothers, James LeRoy Vize, II and Randall Vize. Mass was celebrated Feb. 11 at St. Raymond’s Catholic Church in Dublin. Burial followed at St. Augustine’s Cemetery in Pleasanton. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Suite E, Dublin, CA 94568. Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.

Jeffrey L. Capito

Jeffrey L. Capito died February 5, 2005 at Kaiser in Walnut Creek. He was 53. The California native had lived in Pleasanton for 20 years. He grew up in Fremont. Jeff’s passion was tennis and he was a member of the U.S. Tennis Association. He also enjoyed camping and fixing things on his home with his wife, Harriet. He is survived by his wife Harriet Capito, a daughter Danielle Capito of Pleasanton, his mother, Mavis Capito of Hayward, sisters Cheryl Stacey of Castro Valley and Teri Capito of San Leandro, brother Gary Capito of San Ramon, a brother-in-law Harold Warner of Clovis and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held February 11 in Livermore. Contributions may be made to the Danielle Capito College Fund, % Edward Jones, 170 Farmers Ln., #4, Santa Rosa, CA, 95405. Arrangements by Callaghan Mortuary.

Homer Clyde Weed

Homer Clyde Weed, 84, a retired Physical Chemist and Geoscientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory died February 12, 2005. He was a 48 year resident of Livermore. A “Celebration of Life” will be held at Unitarian Universalist Church in Livermore on Saturday, February 19 at 1:30 p.m. Homer came to Livermore to work at the Lab in 1957, and retired in 1991. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, Homer made numerous contributions for the Yucca Mountain Project. As a retiree, Homer continued to provide technical support to the Energy Directorate for its Geosciences programs until very recently. Homer was born March, 1920 in Sun City, Kansas, and moved to Bisbee, Arizona when young. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry at the University of Arizona, Tucson, where he lettered in track and was Phi Beta Kappa. Following graduation, Homer worked for Eastman Kodak in Knoxville, TN. Homer attended graduate school at The Ohio State University and received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry. He was a long standing member of the scientific fraternity Gamma Alpha from his time spent at Ohio State. In Livermore, Homer was active in local elections. He bicycled to work for over thirty years, and this contributed greatly to his tenacious tennis game. He loved music, classical literature, and could quote poetry at length. Homer was characterized by all who knew him as having an unassuming nature and dry sense of humor. He is survived by Emily, his wife of 47 years, his nephew James Weed of San Diego, his niece Elizabeth Betanzos of San Diego, and their children. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to a favorite charity.

Lourdes C. DeSouza

Lourdes C. DeSouza died February 12, 2005 in Pleasanton. He was 91. The native of India had lived in Pleasanton for 18 years. His education included a bachelor’s degree. He worked in customs. His hobbies include reading, music and watching sports. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Maria, a son Luiz, daughters, Anna, Teresa, Christine and Andrea, a sister Helen, daughter-in-law Cheryl, sons-in-law Girish, Jude and Robert, and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luis and Idalina, and his brothers. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated February 16 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Pleasanton. Burial will be at St. Augustine’s Cemetery. Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.

Charles Lewis Woodard

Charles Lewis Woodard died February 12, 2005 in Livermore. He was 58. The Missouri native had lived in Livermore for 17 years. His hobby was coin collecting. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Leona Woodard, daughters Lori Woodard and Kristy Woodard, both of Livermore, and Charmaine Finnerty of Vacaville, a son, Jerry Woodard of Livermore, his mother, Jasmine Woodward, a sister Donna Schofield of Illinois and one grandchild. There are no plans for services. Arrangements by Callaghan Mortuary.

Irene Clark Staton

Irene Clark Staton died February 14, 2005 at ValleyCare Medical Center in Pleasanton. She was 85. The  West Virginia native was a Livermore resident. She enjoyed her family, especially her 10 grandchildren. She looked forward to watching her favorite daytime shows and TV ministry. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Jim and Mary Zappia and a son, Chuck Staton, all of Livermore ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death her husband Charles Station Jr. in 1963 and a son, David Clark Staton in 2002. A private service is planned. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Pecks Mill,  West Virginia. Arrangements by Callaghan Mortuary.

Henry John Hatton

Henry John Hatton died February 13, 2005 in Pleasanton. He was 74. The Calexico, CA native had lived in Pleasanton for 32 years. He served in the United States Army with the rank of lieutenant. He earned a BA in economics from UCLA and was president of his fraternity, Theta Delta Chi. Henry was sales manager at Johns-Manville. His affiliations Quarter Century Club and SIRS. His hobbies were football, especially UCLA vs. USC, baseball, camping, fishing and working in his vegetable garden. He was an avid reader and loved politics. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Marie Hatton, his stepmom, Mary Hatton, a son, James Henry Hatton, a daughter, Lisa Marie Hatton and brothers Michael Hatton and David Hatton, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert W. and Gladys Hatton and a brother, Robert Hatton. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Sat., Feb. 19 at St. Elizabeth Seton Chapel, 4001 Stoneridge Dr., Pleasanton. Burial will be at Holy Cross in Colma. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hope Hospice, 6500 Dublin Blvd., Suite 100, Dublin, CA 94578. Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.

Gary Ernest Sommargren

April 21, 1944 – March 8, 2005
Gary Ernest Sommargren died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease) on March 8, 2005 at his home of 18 years in Santa Cruz. Dr. Sommargren, an optical physicist and inventor, was born and raised on Long Island, NY. He received his bachelor and master degrees in physics at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, and a PhD in optics from the University of Rochester, NY. Dr. Sommargren worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for over 20 years and at Zygo Corporation for 10 years, dividing his time between applied research and developing commercial instruments for high-accuracy optical measurements. Throughout his career he was known for his imaginative thinking and unconventional solutions to problems. He made numerous contributions and had a major impact in advancing precision engineering. Most recently, he was on assignment at the University of California Observatories, Lick Observatory at UC Santa Cruz, devising instrumentation to measure precision optics for astronomical applications and designing large telescopes to image planets around nearby stars. He also consulted to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he was a founding member of the Center for Optics. Dr. Sommargren was a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, authored numerous scientific papers and held over 30 patents in precision optical measurement and interferometry. He received three R&D 100 Awards, an international award recognizing the top 100 inventions of the year. The American Society for Precision Engineering granted him a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. Gary’s creativity was also evident at home, where he designed and crafted numerous metalwork and wood pieces and avidly pursued his interest in creating abstract art. He enjoyed people and was a loyal and caring friend to many. His family and friends knew him for his wry sense of humor and easy laughter. He had a deep appreciation for nature and spent much of his leisure time walking beaches and mountain trails in the Santa Cruz area. An extraordinarily dedicated and caring family man, he is survived by his wife of 36 years, Claire, daughter Alaine Sommargren of Bonny Doon, and son and daughter-in-law Erik and Michelle Sommargren of Felton. His children relocated from Seattle to the Santa Cruz area during their father’s two-year illness. He is also survived by his father Ernest Sommargren of Northport, NY, and sister and brother-in-law Gail and Peter Ferber of Baltimore, MD. A memorial Mass will be held on Friday, March 18th at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 435 Monterey Avenue, Capitola, followed by a reception for family and friends at his home in Santa Cruz. At his request, memorial donations may be made to the ALS Association, Bay Area Chapter; Muscular Dystrophy Association, ALS Division; Hospice Caring Project of Santa Cruz; the ALS Center at UCSF; and the Sempervirens Fund.
