Manuel E. Francis

Manuel E. Francis died March 7, 2005 in Walnut Creek. He was 82. The Massachusetts native had lived in Livermore for 58 years. He was the retired union representative for the IAM&AW Local #1546, serving for 24 years. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the Good Sams Club, the UPES (Portuguese Club), and Local #1546 District 190 Union retirees association. He was an avid RVer. He loved to go traveling in his RV, especially to Thousand Trails. He is survived by his wife Marie Francis, sons Manuel E. Francis, Jr. of San Lorenzo, John M. Francis of Livermore, Richard D. Francis of Livermore, and James J. Francis of Concord, a sister, Emma Ferreira of Florida, eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Theresa, a grandson, Doug Kennedy, great granddaughter Chealsey K. Francis, a brother and a sister. A funeral mass was celebrated March 14 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Burial followed at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Livermore. Memorials may be made to Guide Dogs for the Blind, PO Box 151200, San Rafael, CA 94915-1200. Arrangements by Wilson Family Funeral Chapel.

Louie A. Allen, Sr.

Louie Auzelle Allen, Sr. died March 5, 2005 in Pleasanton. He was 91. He lived in Hawaii for several years, working for Castle and Cooke Terminals. He relocated to the States, residing in San Leandro where he met his wife of 43 years. They married in 1962 and moved to Livermore in 1964 to be closer to his work. They joined Trinity Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife Ruth Allen of Livermore, children Louie A. Allen, Jr. of Ridgecrest, Virgil W. Dahl of Lincoln, Sandy Greer of Livermore and Patricia Green of San Leandro; a brother Dempsey Allen of Jackson, MS, a sister, Virginia Philips of Niceville, FL, eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father L.N. Allen, mother Lula Allen and brothers Clarence and Roy. A memorial service was held March 15 at Trinity Baptist Church in Livermore with Dr. Jim Meek and Dr. Dave Wilcox officiating. Private burial was at San Joaquin National Cemetery in Santa Nella. Donations may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements by Wilson Family Funeral Chapel.

Frances “Nana” Salisbury

Frances “Nana” Salisbury died March 8, 2005 in Fremont. She was 86. The  Pennsylvania native had lived in Dublin for 45 years. She retired from R.G.I.S. af the age of 80. She was a loving mother, always giving of herself. Hobbies included bingo, music, and crocheting. She is survived by a son-in-law, Danny Folk of Fremont, daughters Linda Judd of Dublin, Susan Folk of Fremont, and Kristen Salisbury of Castro Valley, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Hubert Salisbury, in 1989. Funeral services were held March 11 in Pleasanton. Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.

Robert John Cowling

Robert John Cowling died March 1, 2005 at his home in Livermore. He was 81. He was born the third of two boys and one girl in 1923 in London, England. He served in the Royal Navy during WWII as an aircraft maintenance mechanic. He immigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1951 via ship across the Atlantic Ocean. His wife flew over to join him that same year. The family immigrated to the United States in 1964, initially settling in San Lorenzo, moving to Fremont in 1965, and settling in Livermore in 1968. He was employed by Automatic Electric in Ontario, and Western Union Telephone & Telegraph in San Francisco before retiring in 1986 from Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation in Oakland as a telecommunications engineer. His passion was radio and every kind of electronic equipment and televisions. He even built an early “cats whiskers” radio from scratch as a youth. Every room in his home contained various electronic equipment. Wire clusters protruded or hung from every wall, ceiling and floor. Robert also enjoyed photography, home movie/video editing, cooking, furniture making and fixing equipment for family and friends. His days were dominated with his knack for tinkering. He loved to talk about his experiences and opinions with anyone willing to listen. He is survived by his daughter Laurel Jean Smith of Colfax, a son Jeffrey Charles Cowling of Brentwood, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Vera Jesse Cowling, in 2004. A memorial service was held March 11 in Livermore followed by a celebration of his live. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to his favorite charity, the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements by Callaghan Mortuary.

Irene Edna Bennington

Irene Bennington died March 11, 2005 at the age of 76. She was a native of Sydney, Australia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Bennington. The couple was married for 54 years, living first in Stockton, then Pleasanton. She was also preceded in death by her son Wayne Bennington. She is survived by a daughter Norah Bennington of Stockton, three grandchildren, her sisters Iris Burns, Norah Stevens and Daphne Heavener, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held March 15 in Pleasanton. Private burial services were held at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson, CA. Donations may be made in her name to Sutter VNA & Hospice, 4600 S. Tracy Blvd., Suite 101, Tracy, CA 95377, or to Hope Hospice, 6500 Dublin Blvd., Suite 100, Dublin, CA 94568. Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.

Oscar Reyes Kabigting

Oscar Kabigting died Monday, March 6, 2006 in Pleasanton. He was 74. Born in Candaba, Pampanga, Philippines, Mr. Kabigting received his education at the Philippine College of Commerce and was employed as a Security Officer. His hobbies included singing and gardening. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Serine A. Kabigting of Albay, Bicoli, Philippines, sons Anthony, Alexander, Adrian and Abelardo, daughter Anna Ramin, brother Raul Reyes, sisters Eva Medina, Genie Kabigting, Veranda Cruz and Tessie Imperio, and 2 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Amelia Agagon, a brother, Carlo Kabigting, and his father and mother Abelardo and Beatriz Kabigting. Funeral services were held March 9 in Pleasanton. Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.

Brian Clay

Brian Clay died February 28, 2006 at the age of 83. A resident of Pleasanton for 34 years, Mr. Clay served in the Air Force, attended Ohio State University, and was employed as a pharmacist. He had a dedicated passion for his work. His hobbies included reading, classical and jazz music, golf and crossword puzzles. He was known for his irrepressible Irish sense of humor He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elaine Clay of Pleasanton, son Kevin Lee Clay of Virginia City, Nevada, Daughter Darcy Clay Seibert, Ph.D., of Tallahassee, Florida, grandchildren Justin, Christopher, Sierra and Willy, and niece Christine. Donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital Memorial and Honor Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1941, or the Senior Support Program of the Tri-Valley, 5353 Sunol Blvd., Pleasanton, CA 94566. Maestro Vincenzo Giannini

On February 24, 2006, a few days before his 92nd birthday, Maestro Vincenzo Giannini entered into eternal life at Seton Hospital, Daly City, CA. Maestro Giannini came from Italy and was under contract as the chorus director of the San Francisco Opera in 1960. In addition, he established the San Francisco Polyphonic Chorale, sponsored by the City and County of San Francisco. During his career, he performed all over the world, including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Venezuela and Ireland. The highlight of his career was his artistic performances for the Shah of Iran, while at the Teheran Opera Company during the 1970s. Maestro was very much loved for his musical genius. He worked until he was 80 years old, composing over 150 classical compositions. His is survived by his devoted wife of over 40 years, Gloria Giannini, his mother-in-law, Allee Enander, his wife’s aunt, Gertrude Changnon, and his three sons, Fausto, Orio, and Enzo Giannini, all of Italy. Since 1998, Maestro Giannini has been blessed with private bedside nursing for his care and comfort. Appreciation goes to his nurses: Shirley McCarren, Olga Allen, Elvira Zapeda, Elizabeth Johnson, Sherryl Palalay, Nenita Palalay, Pablo Palalay, Isabel Reyes, Susie, Gracia, Carmen Del Rosario, Cilda Delgado, Beauticia and Edma Raqueno. Special thanks to the many doctors and nurses at Hacienda Care Center, Valley Care Hospital, Kindred Acute Pulmonary Care Hospital and Seton Hospital. Funeral services were held in Livermore on March 16. Burial, per Maestro’s request, will be at the family burial plot, Peace Lutheran Church, New London, Minnesota, next to his wife’s father. A celebration of Maestro Vincenzo Giannini’s life by the performance of some of his music will be held at a later date in San Francisco.

Rita F. Bordes

Rita F. Bordes died March 5, 2006 at Bethany Board and Care. She was 87. The native of Illinois had lived in Livermore for one year. Prior to that she lived in Antioch for over 40 years. Rita was a member of the Contra Costa County Historical Society and Delta Hospital Auxiliary. She is survived by her sisters Alvis Joosten and Lois Olson of Wisconsin, a brother Merlin Pierce of Arizona and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Sylvian “Hoppy” Bordes in 1999. At her request, no services will be held. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery in Livermore. Contributions may be made to Hope Hospice, 6500 Dublin Blvd., Suite 100, Dublin, CA 94568. Arrangements by Callaghan Mortuary.

Jerine Molinari

Jerine “Jeannie” Molinari died March 9, 2006 in Pleasanton. She was 83. The native of  Texas had lived in Livermore for 33 years. She was a member of the San Leandro Match Club and National Women’s Bowling Association. Jeannie was an avid bowler, superb seamstress and loved oil painting. She is survived by her daughters Sally Molinari and Renee Troutt of Livermore and Christine Altson of Loomis, twelve grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Funeral services were held March 14 in Livermore. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements by Callaghan Mortuary.

Alice E. Haussmann

Alice E. Haussmann died March 1, 2006 in Los Altos. She was 82. The Virginia native had lived in Livermore for 50 years. She loved holidays, antiques, and being outside in her garden. Most of all she loved being with her family and friends. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor and love of children. She is survived by her daughters Barbara Wilson of Sunnyvale and Mary Boeck of Ohio and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred Carl Haussmann. A private graveside service was held March 6 at Memory Gardens Cemetery where she was buried next to her late husband. Donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 49 Stevenson St., Suite 1200, San Francisco, CA 94105. Arrangements by Callaghan Mortuary.

Melissa Bernadou

Melissa Margaret Mahoney Bernadou died peacefully at her home in San Ramon on March 9, 2006. She was 89. The native of Oregon was the second of 14 children. She graduated from Sacred High School in Klamath Falls, Oregon. The following year she married Paul Bernadou. During World War II, the Navy took Melissa and Paul to new York. They later returned to the Bay Area where they eventually settled in San Rafael. Melissa worked in the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Forest Service until her retirement after 27 years of service. With her husband, she enjoyed a number of years traveling throughout the U.S. in their motor home. She enjoyed gardening and the San Francisco 49ers. She was a long time member of St. Isabella’s in San Rafael, a recent member of St. Raymond’s, Catholic Charities of the East Bay and Catholic Daughters of America. She is survived by her sisters Mary (Guy, deceased) Barni of Houston, TX., Louise (Ben) McEntee of Pleasanton, brothers Bob (Sue) Mahoney of Portland, OR, Jim (Jerry) Mahoney of South East Salem, OR., and Dan (Joanie) Mahoney of Glendale, AZ, and by more than 100 nieces and nephews from several generations. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Bernadou. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 13 at St. Augustine’s catholic Church in Pleasanton. Burial was March 14 at St. Olivet’s Cemetery in San Rafael. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Hope Hospice, St. Raymond’s Catholic Church in Dublin, or the Catholic Charities of the East Bay., Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.

Clyde Robinson

Clyde Robinson died March 9, 2006 in Walnut Creek. He was 74. The native of Iowa had lived in Pleasanton for nine years. Prior to that he lived in Barrington, IL for seven years. He graduated from St. Paul Bible College with a B.A. He served in the U.S. Navy, leaving with an honorable discharge in 1954. He worked in maintenance, as a drywall finisher and truck driver. He was a member of Valley Community Church in Pleasanton. His hobbies included Bible study, reading, and gardening. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jeane Robinson of Pleasanton, a son and daughter-in-law Russel and Lynn Robinson of Palatine, IL; daughters Rhonda Steiner of Castro Valley, and Rita (Marco) Hanson of Plymouth, MN, a brother Ray Robinson of Iowa, sister Florence Sorter of MN, five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Harold, Floyd and Clarence Robinson, and infant daughter, Faith Jeanette Robinson. No services are planned. Sam (Salvatore) Siracusa

Sam (Salvatore) Siracusa died March 11, 2006. He was 90. He was born in Argentina. At the age of five, he and his family moved back to Sicily. With two of his sisters, Sam came to the U.S. at the age of 14 and settled in San Francisco where he attended Balboa High School, graduating in 1934. His life’s work was in the area of craft. He was self-employed and recognized as a master woodworker and finisher of furniture. He participated in many local Italian sport and social clubs, was an active member of the Verdi Club and lifetime member of the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club at the time of his passing. He played soccer and ran track at Balboa High School. He also played and coached soccer, bowled, golfed and played volleyball at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club in North Beach. It was in North Beach where he met his wife of 62 years, Clara, who predeceased him in 2001. He is survived by his children Daniel Siracusa, Sandra (Roy) Cavellini, David (Dena) Siracusa, seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Grace Siracusa, Paula Ray and many nieces and nephews. He was a fighter who will be greatly missed. There will be a memorial mass celebrated on March 16 at 2 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 4001 Stoneridge Dr., Pleasanton. Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.

Bruce Bordenkircher

Bruce Odell Bordenkircher died January 30, 2007 at his home in Livermore. He was 82.
The native of Ohio had lived in Livermore for 34 years. Bruce loved his dogs, fishing, playing golf and working on cars.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joann Bordenkircher, sons Richard Bordenkircher of Camarillo, Dale Bordenkircher of Carmichael and Gary Bordenkircher of Los Gatos and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held February 2 in Livermore. Burial as a Roselawn Cemetery in Livermore.
