Kathryn Louise McDaniel
Kathryn Louise (“Kathy”) McDaniel, 61, formerly of Livermore, died suddenly on December 6, 2007, at her home in Oakland.
Kathy was born on September 23, 1946, in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Roscoe Lewis (“Mac”) and Margaret Jane (Symmonds) McDaniel.
She is survived by her son, Matthew Hamilton (Luma) Dahlbacka of San Francisco; three sisters, Mrs. Larry (Jane Ann) Boston of Livermore, Mrs. Walter (Barbara) Chapman of Edmonds, Washington, and Mrs. Timothy (Mary Elizabeth “Beth”) Cockrel of Bremerton, Washington; four grandchildren, Danielle Dahlbacka of San Francisco, Jason Dahlbacka of Pleasant Hill, and Maya and Zachary Dahlbacka, both of San Francisco; several beloved nieces and nephews; and her loving partner and companion of 12 years, Harry R. Payne Jr. of Oakland.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Nancy Ellen (McDaniel) Everitt; her grandparents, Paul and Bertha (Smith) Symmonds, and Ernest and Mary (Hyde) McDaniel; and twin granddaughters, Sabine and Simone Dahlbacka.
Kathy was raised and attended school in Carthage, Illinois. She graduated from Carthage Community High School in 1964, then attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a music major. She attended Methodist and Unitarian churches in various communities where she lived throughout her life.
Kathy was a gifted musician with a beautiful and unique voice. Music remained a constant, important part of her life. She performed for many years, and enjoyed listening to many styles of music, as well as encouraging the development of musical talent in others. At the time of her death, she was co-owner of Trip Toes Travel LLC in Oakland, where she had many opportunities to pursue another one of her passions – world travel.
Her other interests included photography, art, world affairs, charitable work, and most of all, her family. Kathy doted on her nieces and nephews as they were growing up, and her grandchildren were the “lights of her life.” Her creative, inquisitive, artistic, adventurous, generous, and loving nature was a blessing to all who knew her, and her idealism and hope for “peace on earth” never faded. She touched many, many lives, and will be greatly missed.
A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held on Sun., Jan. 20, from 1-6 in the afternoon, at 6159 Buena Vista Ave. in Oakland. Friends are invited to participate in a potluck luncheon beginning at 1:00, and in a formal time of remembrance which will begin at 3:00.
A memorial fund will benefit an organization whose work Kathy had come to admire deeply. Checks may be made payable to “The Vietnam Fund for Education, Music and Infrastructure,” and either brought to the memorial service or mailed to Beth Cockrel, 3310 Classic Ave. NE, Bremerton, WA 98310.
Kathy’s body has been cremated, and will later be interred at Moss Ridge Cemetery
in her hometown of Carthage, Illinois, alongside her parents and sister, Nancy.
Colleen A. Graff
Colleen A. Graff, a resident of Randle, Washington, passed away December 14, 2007. She is survived by her husband Bill; daughters, Michelle and Jennifer Moore; granddaughter, Rachelle Moore; brother, Michael Carroll, and cousin, David Shortino.
Colleen was a former resident of Livermore, where she was known as Colleen Moore. She was a popular fitness instructor at the Livermore Valley Tennis Club, as well as an accomplished gourmet cook and hostess. She would have celebrated her 56th birthday on January 12.
A graveside service was held Saturday, December 22, 2007 at Mt. View Cemetery

Roy Ciarfaglio
Roy Angelo Ciarfaglio passed away peacefully on January 6, 2008 after a long battle with a rare brain condition. He was 77.
Roy was born in San Francisco on Aug. 23, 1930, the younger of two sons of Italian immigrants Rocco and Anita Ciarfaglio. He graduated from Mission High School in San Francisco in 1948 and later worked as an apprentice carpenter in San Leandro. Roy served in the Korean War with the 25th Infantry Division. After coming home, he married the girl across the street, Genene Turner, in 1956, and she remained the love of his life. Roy and Genene moved to Livermore in 1966 and lived in the community for over 40 years. Roy was a contractor and built many homes in the Tri-Valley. He will always be remembered for the professional quality of his work and for his heart of gold. He was a member of the Buon Tempo Italian Social Club. His family and friends will miss him.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Genene Ciarfaglio, daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Chuck Geerhart; son Ed Ciarfaglio and grandson Steven Ciarfaglio, brother Vito Ciarfaglio and sister-in-law Marlene Ciarfaglio and nephews Vita Ciarfaglio Jr. (Terry), and Michael Ciarfaglio.
A Catholic Vigil will be held at 7 p.m. on Fri., Jan. 11 for family and friends at Callaghan Mortuary, 3833 East Ave., Livermore. Chapel Blessing Services will be held at the same location at 11 a.m. on Sat., Jan. 12.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Roy’s name to the UCSF Foundation (Memory and Aging Center), c/o Eden Jacoby, Dept. of Neurology, 44 Montgomery St., Suite 2200, San Francisco, CA 94104 or to Hope Hospice of Dublin.
Kathleen Bingham
Kathleen Bingham while in the loving presence of her children was released from the restraints of her physical pain and suffering on Jan. 6, 2008, to return home and enter into eternal rest with her beloved husband.
A void will be forever in the lives of her daughter Catherine Klena, son- in-law Tony Klena, sons Ronald Bingham and his partner Deanna Johnson, David Bingham and his partner Debbie Ewert, as well as her grandchildren Andrew, Kelsey, Ashley, Amanda, Anna, Allie, Brianna, Crystal, Jason and Nevaeh. She was preceded in death by a stillborn daughter Michelle, her husband Ronald Bingham, parents John and Kathleen Moore, sisters Dora Spence and May Pring and leaves behind grieving siblings, in laws, extended family members and friends.
She was born July 13, 1940. Kathleen immigrated from Glasgow, Scotland in 1970, She owned Golden Girl Cleaners in San Ramon, and resided in Dublin, San Ramon and Manteca, throughout her life.
A Catholic Vigil and Blessing will be held at Graham-Hitch Mortuary, 4167 First St., Pleasanton, at 1:30 p.m., Friday Jan 11, Burial will be after the funeral service at St Augustines Cemetery
where she will join our awaiting father on his birthday.
Virginia (Gammy) Mendez
Virginia (Gammy) Mendez passed away on January 6, 2008 at her home in San Jose. Her family and friends were by her side.
She was born Nov. 2, 1919. She worked as a secretary for the San Jose Unified School District for 42 years.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Mike Mendez, her three sons and their wives, Jimmy and Charlene White, Ricky and Tammy Mendez, and Tommy and Lisa Mendez, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Visitation was 5 to 9 p.m. with Catholic Vigil at 7:30 p.m. on Thurs., Jan. 10 at Callaghan Mortuary, 3833 East Ave., Livermore Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Fri., Jan. 11 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 458 Maple St., Livermore. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery, 3885 East Ave., Livermore.
Megan Renae Whipple
Megan Renae Whipple passed away on January 3, 2008 at Children’s Hospital-Oakland at the age of nine-and-a-half years. She is the daughter of Richard and Laura Whipple of Livermore, sister to Michael Conley, sister-in-law to Kristie and auntie to Amanda, all of Buckeye, AZ. Megan is loved by many grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Jennie Martinez.
Megan was a child with cerebral palsy and an autoimmune disease. However, that did not prevent her parents from giving her a full and exciting life. They introduced her to kayaking and bicycling. She loved to travel, especially to Hawaii and New Mexico. She loved to read and listen to music, her favorite was Hawaiian.
Megan brought joy to everyone. She had a smile that would light up a room, an infectious laughter, and a funny and loving personality.
A celebration of her life will be held at 4 p.m. on Fri., Jan. 18 at Asbury United Methodist Church, 4743 East Ave., Livermore.
Contributions can be made to Children’s Hospital Foundation in memory of Megan, or to Asbury United Methodist Church Megan Whipple Endowment Fund.

Dolores “Dee” Casipit
Dolores “Dee” Casipit passed away peacefully, in her home in Brentwood on December 22, 2008 at the age of 81.
Dolores was born on August 27, 1927 to Joseph and Rose Medina in Livermore. She spent most of her beautiful life in Livermore until moving to Brentwood in 1983.
Dolores loved sewing, especially show clothes to wear when showing the family horses, which she loved dearly. Dolores was known for baking her Award Winning Lemon Meringue Pie.
She loved her family and extended family immensely. Every year she looked forward to her trip to Nashville with daughter Lauralye.
Dolores was preceded in death, by her husband Louis in 2007 and daughter Tammy in 2004. She is survived by her children Bud (Patty) Cardoza of Oakdale, Cindy (Doran) Burrow of Livermore, Lauralye Casipit of Brentwood, Sue (Wayne) Love of Idaho and Colton and Rachelle Bermingham of Livermore, her sister Eleanor Cardoza of Livermore and four grandchildren; Heather and Raeann Cardoza and Ty and Tiffany Burrow.
Dolores is also survived by her many nieces, nephews and extended family members, all of whom were very dear to her.
Dolores loved entertaining and dancing, now she and Louis are dancing together forever.
A memorial service was held at the family ranch in Brentwood on January 1.

Mary Niles Ziegeweid
Mary Niles Ziegeweid passed away peacefully on December 21, 2008 at Valley Memorial Hospital in Livermore at the age of 85.
Mary was born on December 10, 1923 in Texas to Will & Ruth Niles.
Mary graduated high school in Livermore and then went on to become an RN at Valley Memorial Hospital in Livermore until retiring in 1987.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Wilmer. She is survived by her four brothers Will L. Niles, J.E Niles, Jack Niles and Jess Niles, and by three sisters Thelma Jillson, Betty Armond and Ruby Fay Hughins.
A private burial will be held on Monday, January 5, 2009 at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery.
A Memorial Mass for family and friends will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Livermore at a later date.

Spiliotopoulos
Theoharis Anastasios Spiliotopoulos, better known as “Harry” peacefully passed away at his Pleasanton home surrounded by friends and family on March 23, 2010.
He was 68 years old. He was born July 15, 1941 in Athens, Greece.
He moved from Greece to Pleasanton in 1961 where his aunt and uncle resided and owned the Cheese Factory. He graduated from Cal Poly in 1969 with a degree in Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering and worked as an engineer for 38 years.
Harry was a generous man and could fix just about anything.
He was also an excellent cook specializing in his Greek Cuisine and Crème Brule. His hobbies included computers and restoring old cars.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Spiliotopoulos, of Pleasanton, two daughters and their spouses, Staci and David Valdix of Pleasanton and Trisha and Scott Carter of Pleasanton and 5 grandchildren.
A service to honor his life was held on Monday, March 29 in Pleasanton.
Memorial Donations are requested to the American Cancer Society.
