Louis John Mariani, 89, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007 at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara. His wife, Dorcas Justine Mariani, 86, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007 at her home. Both were Cupertino residents. They were married for 65 years.
They are survived by their children and their spouses, Jack and Linda Mariani of Winters, Martin and Theresa Mariani of Winters, and Louis Mariani Jr. of Saratoga; grandchildren, Christopher, Benjamin, Andrew, Adam, Kelly, Matthew, Justin and Megan; great-grandson Miles.
They were preceded in death by their daughter, Diane.
A service will be held for Louis on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. The Mission at Santa Clara University. A celebration of his life will follow at the Mariani Restaurant in Santa Clara at 4:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. and Mrs. Mariani’s memory to the Louis and Justine Mariani Scholarship Endowment Fund, Santa Clara University, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95053.
Johnnie Collado, Jr. a lifelong resident and orchard farmer of Winters died July 26, 2007 at the age of 85. He was born December 24, 1921 in Winters. After World War II and serving as a medical corpsman in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters, Mr. Collado returned to the Winters area to farm in the McMahan Tract District of rural Winters until his retirement at age 80.
Mr. Collado’s most cherished love in his life was his wife of 60 years, Mary. In addition to Mary, his family was his most important life’s work.
In his earlier years of farming he served as the first District Representative for the California Apricot Producers Association in the Winters area. He was also a District Director for Sunsweet Growers Cooperative. He strived for improvement changes and promoted active participation.
As his children grew, Mr. Collado also served on the Board of the Wolfskill School District which was later unified with Winters Unified Schools.
Mr. Collado was preceded in death by his parents John and Manuela (Carbahal) Collado, who were amongst the earliest Spanish immigrants to the Winters area at the turn of the 1900’s.
In addition to his wife Mary, he is survived by his children Patty Collado-Parks and her husband, Rob, of Eugene, Oregon and John Collado and his wife, Kathy of Houston, Texas. Mr. Collado known as “Pops” to his grandchildren and a prankster amongst them leaves Chris and Danielle Parks of Eugene and J.D. and Tim Collado of Houston.
He also leaves a sister, Dee Salido of Sacramento. Preceding him in death were sisters, Mary McKissick of Sacramento, Carmen Dutra and Mildred Robben of Dixon and brother, Domingo Collado of Winters. He loved his nieces and nephews and their children and they, too, were a very important part of his extended family.
Visitation and a rosary were held Monday, July 30 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. The funeral was held Tuesday, July 31 at the Winters Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Wiscombe’s of Davis. Charitable contributions can be made in Mr. Collado’s memory to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Building Fund, 511 Main Street, Winters, 95694.
Suzanne (Constant) Heisey passed away on July 17, 2007 in Santa Cruz. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas on Nov. 4, 1936, she was 70 years old. She grew up in Winters and was a rancher for many years. She enjoyed raising livestock and gardening, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Paul (Bud) Wilber Heisey III of Escalon; daughters and sons-in-law, Leslie and Jason Walsh of Aptos, Leesa and Ken Telford of Hayward and Lori and Johnny Silcox of La Follette, Tennessee; son and daughter-in-law, John and Teresa Lessman of Escalon; brother and sister-in-law, Jay and Billie Constant of Kentucky; brother Albert Constant of Washington; sisters, Dice Bledsoe of Winters and Roslie Myers of Sacramento; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are planned for Friday, July 27, at 11 a.m. at the Winters Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at City Park.
Douglas E. Fenley, 88, died June 17, 2007, at Providence Alaska Medical Center.
Fenley was born Oct. 8, 1918, in San Francisco. He moved to Alaska in 1947. Doug was a retired electrician with the IBEW and a commercial fisherman. He enjoyed being a pilot, commercial fisherman and extensive world traveler.
Fenley was the descendent of two pioneering Winters families: the Fenleys and the Sidwells. He was the son of Everett Fenley and Georgia Sidwell. Fenley graduated with the Winters High School Class of 1937.
His family wrote: "Doug was a loving husband, generous to his family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman. He and his wife and family spent many years enjoying the outdoors at their cabin on Lake Susitna, where the Fourth of July parties were legendary. His love of Alaska and the surrounding waters led him to build his own commercial fishing boat.
"After retirement, Doug and Effie traveled extensively throughout the United States and the world, making life-long friends along the way. Their travels took them to all the continents of the world. Some of their experiences included riding elephants in Thailand, camels in Egypt and a balloon ride over the Serengeti."
Fenley is survived by his wife of 45 years, Effie; children, Scott, Jerri and Janet; grandchildren, Travis, Melanie, Joselyn, Carol and Melinda; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Donations may be sent to the American Heart Association.
A gathering of family and friends was held at Tiffany's Café in Alaska.
Robert LeRoy Kiefer died Wednesday July 4, 2007 at Mercy San Juan Hospital in Carmichael at age 75.
Mr. Kiefer was born October 12, 1931 in Missouri to Clarence and Odessa (Pointer) Kiefer. He had been a Yolo County resident for more than 20 years where he was employed as a truck driver for California Motor Express.
Survivors include Mr. Kiefer’s wife of 40 years. Margaret Kiefer of Sacramento, daughter, Karen Ellwood and Dana Smith and husband Fred of Woodland, son, Robert Kiefer and wife Kathryn of Dunnigan, brother, Howard Kiefer of Galt, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother; Don Kiefer.
The family requests memorials in Mr. Kiefer’s name by directed to the American Cancer Society.
A memorial service was scheduled for 11a.m. Monday, July 9 at the Woodland Family Worship Center; 386 W. Beamer St., Woodland with Rev. John Hundall officiating. A private interment will be held at Winters Cemetery
in Winters. Evergreen Funeral Services of Woodland assisted the family with arrangements.
Randell Alan Norfolk passed away in Winters on July 4, 2007. Born in Fairfield on Dec. 24, 1954, he was 52 years old. He was a lifelong resident and a Winters High School graduate, and was employed as a mechanic at Double M Trucking.
He is survived by his children, Carrie and Jennifer Norfolk of Reno, and Nathan Norfolk of Fairfield; grandchildren, Chyna, Samantha and Shai Maglalano, and Reanne Norfolk, all of Reno; parents, Ralph and Felicia Norfolk of Winters; brother and sister-in-law Timothy and Paige Norfolk of Winters; several nephews and nieces in Winters.
A celebration of his life took place on Saturday, July 7, at his parents’ home in Winters. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Norfolk’s name for cancer patients at St. Jude’s Hospital.
Mary Edith Sharp Steele died on Feb. 13, 2008 in Woodland at the age of 97. She was born on Jan. 1, 1911 in Nashville, Tennessee. She attended Peabody College for Teachers and worked in a book store and was the purchaser for children’s books. She later worked as a journalist for a small newspaper. She was married to Gordon Kirkpatrick Steele, a career Army officer, in 1943. They lived briefly in Kentucky, Germany, France and Arkansas, and then for many years in Hawaii. After Gordon died in 1976, she moved to California to be closer to her children.
She is remembered for her southern hospitality, graciousness, generosity and love of family. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She also loved her pets, which included a German shepherd dog, several cats, parakeets, a wild mongoose, and wild birds. She was interested in Hawaiian plants. She made beautiful hand embroidered quilts for family and friends. More recently, she enjoyed scrabble and crossword puzzles, and always enjoyed literature and reading.
She is survived by her son, Kirk Steele of Los Angeles; daughter, Lee Wilce of Winters; and grandson, Brendan Wilce of Placerville.
Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Winters Friends of the Library, P.O. Box 963, Winters, CA, 95694.
Services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008 for Tracy resident James “Jim” Snodgrass, 75, who died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008 at his home in Tracy with his wife, Lois, by his side.
He was born on Oct. 17, 1932 in Winters. After marrying Lois in 1964 they moved to Mountain View. In 1966 they moved to Sunnyvale, then in 1972 the family moved to Campbell. Mr. Snodgrass and his family lived in Campbell until 1995. He and his wife then moved to Morgan Hill in 2000 until their move to Tracy in 2006.
Mr. Snodgrass served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954. While serving as a radioman onboard the icebreaker USS Burton Island he participated in the Bering Sea Explorations. He owned his own business for many years enabling him to have time to go to his children’s school and sporting events while they were growing up. He was an avid 49er fan, Valley Christian High School Warriors Football fan, and he enjoyed breakfast each morning with his wife at Perko’s, going to the Bethany Activity Center in Ripon and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of more than 43 years, Lois Snodgrass of Tracy; daughter and son-in-law Cherie and Carl Mealie of Tracy; sons and daughters in law Jeff and Patty Snodgrass of Castle Rock, Colorado, Jason and Carrie Snodgrass of San Jose, and Justin and Rebecca Snodgrass of Castle Rock, Colorado; grandchildren Michael, Matthew and Rachael of Tracy and Jacob and Jared of Castle Rock Colorado; many nieces and nephews.
His mother Anna Snodgrass, father Rupert Snodgrass, brother Richard Djubek and granddaughter Natalya Mealie preceded him in death.
Donations may be made in Mr. Snodgrass’ name to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Maria Gervacia Morales-Nieto passed away at Alderson’s Convalescent Hospital on Tuesday, February 12 at the age of 107.
Maria was born in Chihuahua, Mexico on February 28, 1900, to Martin and Pilar (Mendoza) Morales, who have predeceased her. She had been a Yolo County resident for the past 45 years.
Surviving Mrs. Nieto are sons Miguel Nieto of Mexico and Ramon Nieto of Woodland; daughters Esperanza Navarete of Woodland, Concepcion Nieto-Ramirez of Winters, Cristina Jacquez (Vicente) of Mexico, and Irma Nieto (Victor) of Sacramento. Also surviving are 29 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Anastacio Nieto, and son Belisario Nieto.
A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, February 19 from 5-6 p.m. at Kraft Bros. Chapel, 175 Second Street, Woodland. Rosary to follow at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 301 Walnut Street, beginning at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Wednesday, February 20, beginning at noon at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 301 Walnut Street in Woodland, with Father Uriel Ojeda officiating. Interment will be at Monument Hill Memorial Park, 35036 County Road 22, Woodland.
