James Barker Niday
Former Pleasanton resident
James Barker Niday died June
20, 2008, in Woodland Hills. He
was born May 21, 1917 in Nashville,
Tennessee.
He had lived in Pleasanton for
42 years. James received an
S.B.’42 and S.M.’60 from the
University of Chicago. He
worked at Tennessee Valley Authority;
Institute for Nuclear Studies,
University of Chicago; California
Research and Development;
and at the Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory.
He is survived by his wife
Marcia Hitchcock Niday; sons
David (Cathleen) Niday, Paul
Niday, Michael (Joei) Niday, and
Peter (Linda) Niday; grandchildren
Thomas (Molly) Niday;
Andrew Niday; Sara Niday; Bart
Niday; and Kate Niday.

of Chicago in memory of James
B. Niday are suggested by the

Theodore Slade
Theodore “Ted” Slade, a 66
year resident of Alameda County,
Passed away peacefully on June
27, 2008 at the age of 78.
Ted was born in Guildford
County, North Carolina on October
13, 1929. Ted was the first
Fire Fighter for the city of Dublin,
where he held badge #1 for
19 years. He was founder and past
president of the Firefighters
Union Local 1885. Ted was also
a past member of the Lions Club
and the Rotary Club of Dublin.
He was an avid outdoorsman and
especially enjoyed hunting and
fishing.
He is preceded in death by his
son Gordon who passed away in
1989. He is survived by his sons
David (Dorothy) Slade of Livermore,
and Richard (Michelle)
Slade of Dublin, seven grandchildren
Jeremy (Marsibil) Slade
of Livermore, Josh (Jennifer)
Slade of Folsom, Scott (Sarah)
Slade of La Mesa, Devin Slade
of Livermore, Corinne Slade of
Dublin, Derek Slade of Dublin
and Chelsey Slade of Kansas, and
two great grandchildren Johanna
and Dagbjort of Livermore. Ted
will be missed by all but not forgotten.
Visitation for friends and family
will be held on Thursday July
3 from 1 to 3 p.m., with a memorial
service to follow at 3 p.m. at
Callaghan Mortuary Chapel
3833 East Ave, Livermore.
Inurnment immediately follows
at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Ray J. King
Ray J. King went to be with
the Lord on Sunday, February
21. He was born January 1, 1933,
in Montrose, CO. He received
his MSEE. and Ph.D. degrees
from the University of Colorado.
Prior to moving to Pleasanton,
Ray was a professor
of EE at the UWMadison
from 1964-1982 .
From 1983-1990 Ray worked as
a research engineer at the Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory.
In 1983 Ray co-formed
a company, KDC Technology
in Livermore, where he worked
until his passing.
Ray is survived by his wife of
45 years, Diane; his son, Karl;
his daughter, Kristin; and three
grandchildren.
A memorial service was held
Feb. 26 at Crosswinds Church,
6444 Sierra Court, Dublin.
In lieu of flowers the family
requests donations be made to

Louise Catherine Smith
Louise Catherine Smith had
resided in San Ramon, California
since 1979. She was a native
California born in Los Angeles
on November 5, 1937. She was
married for 54 years to Alex, her
lifetime friend and partner.
She found final peace on Tuesday,
February 23, 2010. Louise
was 72 years old.
Louise was a very bright and
sparkly woman in many ways.
Her smile and eyes could always
light up a room. She was a very
sweet unselfish woman, which
seemed to be the continuous
theme of her life with us. She
touched people with her kindness
in so many ways. She was a lover
of all living things – animals
(especially her Dobermans, Heidi
and Shani), plants (she loved
her roses, lemons, grapes, and
tomatoes that were home grown)
and she especially adored the
children in her life. Louise retired
as a crossing guard from the
San Ramon Police Department.
Louise had numerous grandchildren
and great grandchildren that
she spent time with and helped
to nurture. Louise was fiercely
proud of her family and supported
them no matter what and
where their endeavors took them.
She also loved to craft and to sew
during her lifetime. She used to
sew her children’s clothing, and
also loved to create holiday crafts
including her beloved “Rosie the
reindeer”. Louise had a love of
camping and water-skiing with
her friends and family for vacation,
as well as trips to far-off
lands like her father’s homeland
of Greece. Louise and her husband,
Alex spent their 50th wedding
anniversary on the islands
of Hawaii.
Louise was a Girl Scout leader,
Indian Guides Mom, Softball
Mom, Volleyball Mom, Baseball
Mom, Swim Mom, Blue
Bird Leader, Active participant
in schools (PTA, room aide),
Military Mom, and American
Heart Association Fund-raising
Leader. She attended John C.
Fremont High School (Los Angeles),
and graduated in 1956,
she achieved an AA degree from
Moorpark College in 1976 with
numerous certifications attached.
She retired as a Crossing Guard
(She loved crossing her kids
to make sure they were safe in
San Ramon). Before retirement,
Louise also worked as a Computer
Operator (She dedicated
much of her working career to
the Ruff Times and it’s various
investment affiliates). She was
a member of the First Christian
Church of Christ.
Louise is survived by her
husband Alex C. Smith of San
Ramon, CA (married May 2,
1956 ); children Lorren Repton
(Shaun) of Big Bear, CA, Alex
J. Smith of Paradise, CA, Lisa
Smith-Jenness (Michael) of
San Ramon, CA; siblings Betty
Edwards of Chetopa, KS, Nadine
Botonis of Torrance, CA;
grandchildren Dawn Martinez
of Thousand Oaks, CA, Crystal
Dearth-Lorton of Big Bear, CA,
and Thora “Libby” Jenness of
San Ramon, CA; great grandchildren
Allannah Lorton, Aidan
Lorton, Kurt Lorton. Louise
also leaves numerous nephews,
nieces, great-nephews, greatnieces
and people that called
her Mom, Auntie and Grandma
because of the kindness she
exuded. Louise was preceded in
death by her mother, Grace, her
father, James, her brother Benny,
and her brother Jim.
Her life was full and rich with
fun, family and friends. Louise,
our mother, auntie, grandma and
friend will be greatly missed.
Services were held Feb. 28
in Livermore. Burial followed
at Rose Lawn Cemetery, Livermore,
CA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions
may be made to the
American Cancer Society and
Alzheimer’s Association.
