Orville “Val” Nelson
Val Nelson, 69, native of Oakland,
Ca, resident of Pleasanton,
Passed away at home peacefully
on November 1, 2009. He was
born Dec. 17, 1939.
Val was a master carpenter for
over 40 years and a successful
business owner, doing business
as Unique Remodeling Co. He
enjoyed home improvement projects,
fishing, and spending time
with his grandchildren.
Val is survived by Janet, his
loving wife of 20 years, and
daughters Cheri Langford of
Marietta, OH, Marci Castagner
of Canton, GA, and Miranda Mehlhaff
of Tracy, CA. Val is also
survived by his sons-in-law and
by his grandchildren, Jared and
Jacob Langford, Rebecca and Lukas
Castagner, and Ryan, Daniel,
and Jason Mehlhaff. Val will be
dearly missed by his friends and
family. Janet will miss her sweet
prince, “you were my life.”
In respect of Val’s wishes, no
memorial services will be held.
Donations in his memory may be
made to Hope Hospice.

Roger Dean Underwood
Pleasanton resident Roger Dean
Underwood passed away February
2,4 2008. He was 94.
Born and raised in Portland, Oregon
in 1913, Roger was a man of
integrity and was liked by all, especially
for his quiet manner and sense of
humor.
He was preceded in death by his
late wife, Martha Underwood in 1978.
In 1980 Roger married Lucille
Robbiano and enjoyed 27 years of
marriage with her. Roger and Martha
left Oregon with their 3 yr. old son,
Roger Dwight Underwood around
1945 and lived in California for the
remainder of their lives. They also
raised a daughter, Barbara Lynn.
Roger’s main hobbies in life involved
his family. He was an active Boy
Scout Leader, took an active part in
DeMolay and Job’s Daughters and
took great pride in being a Master
Mason. He was initiated in Park
Boulevard Lodge in Oakland, CA,
then transferred to Pleasanton Lodge
#321 when he moved to Pleasanton in
1980. He chartered the High Twelve,
which is a senior part of the Masonic
Lodge.
We all loved his humor and kindness,
and knew him to be a genuine
gentleman, and devoted family man.
Roger is survived by his two children,
Roger (Carolee) Underwood of
Hat Creek, CA. and Barbara (Dick)
Sullivan of Sonoma, CA.; grandchildren
Jennifer (Paul) Haynie of Winchester,
CA., Keri (Tim) Jacobs of
West Sacramento, CA, Rev. Jay (Julie)
Underwood of Weaverville, CA., and
Julie Renee (Brad) Maxham of Fair
Oaks, CA.; great grandchildren Jack,
Will and Lily Underwood, Jessica and
Julia Haynie, Austin and Kayleigh
Jacobs.
Roger and Lue have been lovingly
attended to for the last few years by
Lue’s daughter, Roxana (Hans)
Hoehne of Pleasanton, her five children
and 12 great-grandchildren.
A Masonic memorial service was
held for Roger on March 2 at the
Pleasanton Masonic Lodge #321.
Roger’s grandson Rev. Jay
Underwood presented the eulogy.

Beulah Salter Fairchild
Beulah Salter Fairchild, age 86,
died peacefully Monday, Feb. 25,
2008.
Born 5/21/21 in Montana, she spent
many years in San Leandro, where she
enjoyed raising her family on Pierce
Avenue with John Salter, who predeceased
her.
Before settling in Pleasanton in
2005, she delighted in retirement with
a home base in Denver, and traveled
the country for many years with the
second love of her life, Allen Fairchild,
her husband. He, her three sons, her
three bonus children, and the many inlaws,
grandchildren, cousins, nieces,
nephews, and friends dearly loved
her. Missing her from Denver is her
son’s family, Wayne and Carol Salter;
from  South Carolina are Dale and
Lauralee Salter, and from Maine is
Gary Salter. Her family from the Tri-
Valley includes Mal and Mary
Cameron from Pleasanton, Anne
Miller from Livermore, and John
Fairchild from Livermore. Beulah’s
love of the Lord was evident to all who
knew her, and her family is comforted
knowing she is in the arms of Jesus.
Friends and family attended a
brunch at First Baptist Church in Pleasanton
on February 29 prior to the
funeral service.

Raellen Dorough
Raellen Dorough died unexpectedly
of post-operative complications
on February 26, 2008, just shy of her
75th birthday.
“Rae,” as she was known to her
family and friends, was a native of
California (born in Los Angeles) and
a long time Livermore resident. She
was the mother of four children, all
California residents: Drake McCarthy
of Oakland, Valerie Bays of Santa
Clara, Maureen McCarthy of San
Ramon, and Colleen Faith of Livermore.
She was also stepmother to
Susan Fisher of Blythe, Lisa Giannini
of Hickman, and Dan Dorough of
Emeryville. She is also survived by 10
grandchildren including Jared and
Alec Faith locally, and one great grandchild.
Besides caring for her large family,
Rae enjoyed a long professional career.
In the 1950’s and 60’s she
worked for Kaiser Steel and for a
dozen years she was a secretary and
administrative assistant in the Chemistry
Department at what was then the
Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. In
the 1970’s she undertook a career in
Real Estate, and was a successful
Realtor/Broker for over 30 years. In
the last 15 years she was co-owner of
the well regarded, locally owned firm,
Valley Properties. Over the years she
gave generously of time and money to
cultural and social enterprises. She
was a founding member of Del Valle
Fine Arts, and with her husband, Gus
Dorough, endowed a Professor’s chair
in Chemistry at UC Berkeley.
Rae’s family invite friends to join
them in a remembrance of this wonderful,
friendly, caring woman at the
Palm Event Center, at 2 p.m. on Sunday,
March 9th, her birthday. The
Event Center is located at 1184 Vineyard
Avenue, Pleasanton.

Mary Ann Hofstede
Mary Ann Hofsteded died peacefully
at ValleyCare Hospital on February
17, 2008 at the energetic age of 91.
Born in West Oakland in 1916,
Mary Ann and Al moved to Pleasanton
in 1987 where she spent countless
hours gardening, cooking and keeping
track of her great grandchildren.
Mary Ann was an inspiration to many
as she overcame a multitude of health
issues to live independently until her
final weeks.
She was preceded in death by her
husband of 58 years, Albert. She is
survived by her son Gary and daughter-
in-law Chris, grandsons, Erik and
Scott and four great grandchildren,
Will, Ava, Garlson and Alden.
A memorial service will be held in
her honor at 10 a.m. on March 8 at St.
Elizabeth Seton Church in Pleasanton.
In lieu of flowers, donations should
be made to a favorite charity.

Mary Louise Lindgren
Mary Louise Lindgren, age 76,
passed in her sleep on February 25,
2008.
The Pleasanton resident was born
January 22, 1932. She was very active
in CAPE and Holy Cross Lutheran
Church.
She was preceded in death by her
husband of 38 years, Arnold Lindgren,
parents Manvel and Josephine, grandson,
Johnny, brother Melvin and cousin
Carole. She leaves behind daughters
Pamela Ann, Denise Michelle and
Donna Marie, grandchildren Jarrett,
Amy, Adam, Lisa, Kimberly and Jessica;
as well as eight great grandchildren,
and a brother and his wife,
Norman and Marie Mendonca.
Services will be held March 8 at
Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1020
Mocho St., Livermore.
In lieu of flowers, family requests
donation to Hope Hospice in Dublin
or to Holy Cross Lutheran.
