Betty Ann Hicks
Betty Ann Hicks was born
Betty Ann Mann in Kentucky on
February 13, 1924. She passed
away peacefully at her home in
Livermore on Monday September
28th at the age of 85. Betty
was a devoted and loving wife,
mother, grandmother and friend
as well as a successful businesswoman.
Betty grew up and attended
high school in Iowa. She was
a majorette with her two best
friends and even performed as
the Queen Mary brought soldiers
home to New York City at the end
of the war. In her youth she held
a variety of jobs from being a
waitress to working in an arsenal
during World War II. Betty was
always known for being hard
working, ambitious and “an up
and comer”. She had to be busy
and productive.
Betty met her husband Mearle
Hicks of 58 years and worked
while he worked and attended
Engineering school. After living
in Iowa, Wyoming,  Texas
and New Mexico they moved to
Livermore with their 5 children
Jim, Marika, Jerry, Jeffrey and
Joel.
While Mearle worked at Sandia,
Betty got busy and first
opened a laundromat. Shortly
thereafter she decided she wanted
to sell clothes rather than clean
them and she opened her first
small women’s clothing store,
which was not much larger than
a closet in the Rincon Center.
The store was called Betty Ann’s
Fashions.
The business was successful
and she expanded to larger stores.
She also owned a store called The
Rage Cage. These businesses
offered personalized customer
service, gift wrapping and free
alterations. Betty knew most of
her customers by name as well
as their sizes, style and color
preferences. Sometimes while at
the market in San Francisco she
would buy a dress with a certain
customer in mind. She offered
true customer service. Betty, with
the help of her husband Mearle
ran these businesses profitably
and successfully for 32 years in
Livermore.
Betty loved to cook, ski and to
travel and went to France, Germany,
Greece, Jamaica and other
locales. She skied until the age of
70. Whenever she did get off her
feet she loved to read. She read
every night before bed and loved
to read to her children and to
children at her church. She loved
to invest in stocks and was quite
good at it. She loved to decorate
and maintain her beautiful home
in Livermore.
Betty is survived by her children
Jerry of  Washington State,
Jeff who travels in a mobile home
and Joel of Anaheim as well as
her brother Fred Mann and her
grandson Scott Gomes. Betty’s
oldest son, Jim died in 1965.
Her only daughter, Marika, died
in 1989. Despite these tragedies
Betty maintained a spirit of true
joy and optimism. Her exuberance
and energy brought her
through some difficult times and
brought joy to every one around
her.Friends, family and former
customers are invited to a Celebration
