Nada Emma Waggoner
Nada Emma Waggoner passed
away peacefully at home with her
family by her side on December 28,
2007 after a heroic battle with cancer.
She was 85.
Nada was born in Cleveland, Ohio
on August 6, 1922 to Max and Barbara
Slanovec immigrants of Slovenia.
Nada was the oldest of four children.
She has a brother Daniel Slanovec of
Bayport New York, brother William
Slanovec of San Jose California and
sister Leona McCartney formerly of
Hanford. She lived in Akron, Ohio
until the age of 13 when she moved to
New York City. There she graduated
from Wadleigh High School in 1940
and then worked as a keypunch operator
before joining the service.
Nada served as a Wave in the Navy
during World War II. After the war she
took advantage of the educational opportunities
offered to veterans. After
completing her schooling, she went to
work for a model airplane magazine
publisher in New York City until
moving to California in 1955.
There she met her husband Miles
Waggoner in 1956 on a blind date.
They dated for six months before
getting married on June 11, 1956.
Miles and Nada lived in Cupertino,
CA until 1959 when they moved to
Livermore, where they have resided
for the last 48 years. After raising her
four daughters Nada went to work as
a retail sales clerk for Mervyns Department
Store in Dublin. She retired
after 29 years of employment at the age
of 82.
Nada is survived by her husband
Miles and her four daughters Barby
Waggoner of Stockton, CA, Donna
Matthew of Tracy, CA and twin daughters
Janine Pinks of Tracy, CA and
Nanette Waggoner of Merced, CA;
brothers Daniel Slanovec and William
Slanovec; grandchildren Corinne
Crosby, Nicole Hardgraves, Christopher
Bryant, Anthony Hardgraves,
Ariel Bryant, Molly Matthew, Lisa
Pinks, great grandson Jordan Colbert,
and many loving nieces. Her sister
Leona McCartney and grandson
Daniel Pinks preceded her in death.
Nada was a very energetic and
outgoing woman. She enjoyed sewing,
needlepoint, crossword puzzles,
tending to her roses, and up until May
of 2007 bowled regularly on the team
leagues at Granada Bowl . She was a
kind and loving wife, mother, aunt,
grandmother and friend. She will be
dearly missed by all.
Friends and family are invited to
attend a memorial service to celebrate
her life on Sunday, January 13 from 11
a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Livermore Pleasanton
Elks Lodge, 940 Larkspur Drive
in Livermore. It is located off of the
First Street /Springtown Exit off of
580 near the golf course.

Kathryn Louise McDaniel
Kathryn Louise (“Kathy”)
McDaniel, 61, formerly of Livermore,
died suddenly on December 6, 2007,
at her home in Oakland.
Kathy was born on September 23,
1946, in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter
of Roscoe Lewis (“Mac”) and Margaret
Jane (Symmonds) McDaniel.
She is survived by her son, Matthew
Hamilton (Luma) Dahlbacka of
San Francisco; three sisters, Mrs.
Larry (Jane Ann) Boston of Livermore,
Mrs. Walter (Barbara) Chapman
of Edmonds,  Washington, and Mrs.
Timothy (Mary Elizabeth “Beth”)
Cockrel of Bremerton,  Washington;
four grandchildren, Danielle
Dahlbacka of San Francisco, Jason
Dahlbacka of Pleasant Hill, and Maya
and Zachary Dahlbacka, both of San
Francisco; several beloved nieces and
nephews; and her loving partner and
companion of 12 years, Harry R. Payne
Jr. of Oakland.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; a sister, Nancy Ellen
(McDaniel) Everitt; her grandparents,
Paul and Bertha (Smith) Symmonds,
and Ernest and Mary (Hyde)
McDaniel; and twin granddaughters,
Sabine and Simone Dahlbacka.
Kathy was raised and attended
school in Carthage, Illinois. She graduated
from Carthage Community High
School in 1964, then attended Knox
College in Galesburg, Illinois, and the
University of Illinois at Urbana-
Champaign as a music major. She
attended Methodist and Unitarian
churches in various communities
where she lived throughout her life.
Kathy was a gifted musician with
a beautiful and unique voice. Music
remained a constant, important part of
her life. She performed for many
years, and enjoyed listening to many
styles of music, as well as encouraging
the development of musical talent in
others. At the time of her death, she
was co-owner of Trip Toes Travel
LLC in Oakland, where she had many
opportunities to pursue another one of
her passions – world travel.
Her other interests included photography,
art, world affairs, charitable
work, and most of all, her family.
Kathy doted on her nieces and nephews
as they were growing up, and her
grandchildren were the “lights of her
life.” Her creative, inquisitive, artistic,
adventurous, generous, and loving
nature was a blessing to all who knew
her, and her idealism and hope for
“peace on earth” never faded. She
touched many, many lives, and will be
greatly missed.
A celebration of Kathy’s life will
be held on Sun., Jan. 20, from 1-6 in
the afternoon, at 6159 Buena Vista
Ave. in Oakland. Friends are invited
to participate in a potluck luncheon
beginning at 1:00, and in a formal time
of remembrance which will begin at
3:00.
A memorial fund will benefit an
organization whose work Kathy had
come to admire deeply. Checks may
be made payable to “The Vietnam
Fund for Education, Music and Infrastructure,”
and either brought to the
memorial service or mailed to Beth
Cockrel, 3310 Classic Ave. NE,
Bremerton, WA 98310.
Kathy’s body has been cremated,
and will later be interred at Moss Ridge
Cemetery in her hometown of Carthage,
Illinois, alongside her parents and sister,
Nancy.

Colleen A. Graff
Colleen A. Graff, a resident of
Randle,  Washington, passed away
December 14, 2007. She is survived
by her husband Bill; daughters,
Michelle and Jennifer Moore; granddaughter,
Rachelle Moore; brother,
Michael Carroll, and cousin, David
Shortino.
Colleen was a former resident of
Livermore, where she was known as
Colleen Moore. She was a popular
fitness instructor at the Livermore
Valley Tennis Club, as well as an
accomplished gourmet cook and hostess.
She would have celebrated her
56th birthday on January 12.
A graveside service was held Saturday,
December 22, 2007 at Mt.
View Cemetery in Auburn,  Washington.

Roy Ciarfaglio
Roy Angelo Ciarfaglio passed
away peacefully on January 6, 2008
after a long battle with a rare brain
condition. He was 77.
Roy was born in San Francisco on
Aug. 23, 1930, the younger of two
sons of Italian immigrants Rocco and
Anita Ciarfaglio. He graduated from
Mission High School in San Francisco
in 1948 and later worked as an
apprentice carpenter in San Leandro.
Roy served in the Korean War with the
25th Infantry Division. After coming
home, he married the girl across the
street, Genene Turner, in 1956, and
she remained the love of his life. Roy
and Genene moved to Livermore in
1966 and lived in the community for
over 40 years. Roy was a contractor
and built many homes in the Tri-
Valley. He will always be remembered
for the professional quality of
his work and for his heart of gold. He
was a member of the Buon Tempo
Italian Social Club. His family and
friends will miss him.
He is survived by his wife of 51
years, Genene Ciarfaglio, daughter
and son-in-law, Cathy and Chuck
Geerhart; son Ed Ciarfaglio and grandson
Steven Ciarfaglio, brother Vito
Ciarfaglio and sister-in-law Marlene
Ciarfaglio and nephews Vita Ciarfaglio
Jr. (Terry), and Michael Ciarfaglio.
A Catholic Vigil will be held at 7
p.m. on Fri., Jan. 11 for family and
friends at Callaghan Mortuary, 3833
East Ave., Livermore. Chapel Blessing
Services will be held at the same
location at 11 a.m. on Sat., Jan. 12.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests
donations in Roy’s name to the
UCSF Foundation (Memory and
Aging Center), c/o Eden Jacoby, Dept.
of Neurology, 44 Montgomery St.,
Suite 2200, San Francisco, CA 94104
or to Hope Hospice of Dublin.
